Extra InformationThe Red Wings made sure every player had his own water bottle and towel Wednesday, all in an effort to ward off the H1N1 virus that's making the rounds in the NHL.

The Oilers are one of several teams with a player, Ladislav Smid, who has been diagnosed with H1N1. In Colorado, where the Wings were last weekend, goalie Peter Budaj has been identified as having it, and Islanders forward Doug Weight and Capitals forward Quintin Laing also have had bouts with the strain. That has led the Wings to be extra cautious.

"Anytime you watch any of the news networks, it's all over. Obviously, it's a concern," Kris Draper said. "So we all had our own water bottles today in practice. You see how it's going through the league. So everyone is just trying to do a little bit more than you normally would to fight this off."

Trainer Piet Van Zant said the team had been briefed on "basic flu season precautions -- try not to touch your nose and mouth with other common surfaces that other people have touched. Wash your hands a lot. Don't share towels and water bottles. Try to get your rest, and make sure you're eating correctly to help your immune system.

"You do the best you can. We came in and we wiped down door handles, and we wiped down the stalls, and we don't normally do that." Van Zant said the team might make H1N1 flu shots available to players, but they're not mandatory.

Brad May related a devastating experience with H1N1 at a hockey tournament his 13-year-old son was at last weekend. "My son didn't actually play in the tournament because he has a broken foot," May said, "but he was in the stands. A boy played in the London tournament on the weekend, and he regretfully passed away on Monday. I think it affected his heart or something. How tragic."

Kirk Maltby, whose 15-month-old twins have been under the weather the past few days, figures it's inevitable someone will get it.

"If it's airborne, what are you going to do?" he said. "With this big a size group, once a couple of guys get it, it's inevitable. Usually everyone gets it to some degree. You can't stop it. You just try to contain it."

Pavel Datsyuk didn't skate because of a sore foot from blocking a shot in Tuesday's 5-4 win in Vancouver, but coach Mike Babcock said he will play Thursday in Edmonton.

“I told you that last year in the playoffs, when he got a shot in the foot, too, and it ended up being a hole in his thigh, so you can’t trust me one bit,'' Babcock joked. "No, he got a shot in the foot and he should go. He just was sore today and it wasn’t going to be comfortable getting his skate on.’’

Babcock said Darren Helm and Patrick Eaves will return to the lineup, replacing Kirk Maltby and Justin Abdelkader. Jimmy Howard will start in goal. He was scheduled to start against the Oilers even before Chris Osgood was pulled early in the first period Tuesday after allowing two goals on four shots.

Of course, after all the talk about the Oilers being shut out for 7 periods, you knew they were going to score.

Rafalski is trash in his own zone.

wow, the Raffy/Stuy pair at it again.

Less than a minute.. man.

Not a 'weak' goal by any means but we can't let stuff like that happen.

Tbh, Wings are not the team to deny anyone goals.

i guess the Red Wings were just what the Oilers offense needed.

nik jr 10-29-2009 08:46 PM

at least the opponent didn't score on their 1st shot. i think it was the 3rd shot.

Uh, yeah, Raffy, I think, got pushed around, leading to the Oilers possession. But in terms of coverage, Flip or someone didn't have their guy.
