Overview
Extra InformationRed Wings forward Dan Cleary, who has one goal in 13 games, is one goal away from the 100th of his NHL career. "Getting antsy? That's an understatement," Cleary said. "Can't get too frustrated."

Cleary said he has to shoot more when he gets chances. "For me it's just about skating, going to the net and hanging on to the puck," Cleary said. "I'm not concerned. I believe it'll come -- just gotta keep working hard."

Coach Mike Babcock said skating is the big thing for Cleary, who was sidelined in training camp with a groin injury. "He's a good player. It's just a matter of time, but his skating is the biggest thing. The pace of his game has got to continue to improve."

Cleary had back-to-back 20-goal seasons for the Wings in 2006-08 and scored 14 goals last season. "You gotta stay positive," Cleary said. "Once you get frustrated, things really go down. The team's playing well right now. Just gotta make sure that I do things, other than scoring."

Teams have become accustomed to using the Wings as a measuring stick in recent years, but Cleary talked that way about facing the Sharks (10-4-1) tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

"They're obviously playing very well and have some guys that are really hot right now," Cleary said. "It's going to be a good game for us. They key for us is going to be playing better defensively."

Patrick Marleau leads the Sharks with 11 goals and 21 points. Dany Heatley is two behind Marleau, and Devin Setochi has seven goals. The Wings are coming off a 2-0 win over the Bruins on Tuesday and have allowed one goal in their past seven periods. Cleary credited goaltender Chris Osgood for that.

"Ozzie's been really great. He's stopping a lot of pucks for us right now," Cleary said. "They could have scored a couple goals yesterday, but Ozzie made great saves."

Defensemen Brian Rafalski and Jonathan Ericsson returned to practice Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena and are expected to play against San Jose. The Wings sent defensemen Doug Janik back to Grand Rapids (AHL).

Ericsson missed the past two games with the flu, and Rafalski missed one game with flu-like symptoms. "Just had to sleep a lot," Rafalski said. "I didn't get too feverish or anything. Little bit of a sore throat and cough. It's coming around."

Your titles to the "in the spotlight" part of the GDT are a bit off for both teams...

go wings, Cleary gets his 100th tonight

Great news about Lilja making progress!

Should be a real good test tonight, definately going to take a 60 minute effort. I hope the D is healthy, because they are going to have to be on the ball tonight. If we contain Heatley, I have good feeling.

Ha ha, on the Homer comment. He's as slow as it gets -or- do we worry when Homer is the only guy on the team who can score consistently? Hmmmm.

That is good news on Lilly. Hopefully it lasts.

Winger98 11-05-2009 02:20 PM

Are there measuring stick games this early in the season? If so, this is probably one of them. It looks as if the Wings have started rounding the corner and getting out of that rough start. A good showing tonight - win or lose - would be a good sign.

Hensta 11-05-2009 02:29 PM

Rafalski and Ericsson are back, so Im gonna predict a high scoring game.

5-4 Wings.

Haha thats a great comment from Kenny. Thats what I like so much about Homer. I'm pretty sure he has the most limited tool box of any guy to ever score 25+ goals.

One thing I think the entire team could learn from Homer, however, is to shoot as soon as the puck is on your stick. Homer isn't taking a lot of wristers, but when he does, they're coming right off the stick faster than they got there. This is one area where the Wings need to improve - someone needs to have the balls to pull off some consistent one-timers (Hank, I'm lookin at you buddy).

TheDanceOfMaternity 11-05-2009 07:08 PM

Sharks are without Pavelski, Setoguchi, Mitchell, Blake, and Murray + Nabokov usually sucks against Detroit = have fun!

You will never look back and say he didnt get the most out of his skills.

Anyway, im going with a 4-1 win.

Cleary, Zetterberg, Leino, Helm

For san Jose: no one cares..

go wings!:yo:

I've noticed that Homer has done this quite a bit this year and has scored at least a couple goals this way. The funny thing is though that half the time when he fires the puck right away is he often seems to be off balance when he takes his shot. I swear in the cases where the puck goes in the net the goalie underestimates Homer and thinks there is no way he can get an effective shot off balance the way he is, and then BOOM its in the net LOL

I missed the start of the game the other night and some of the second, but that hit from Paille was something. Leino needs to get his ass going.

Getting outmuscled by the likes of... Jamie McGinn. He was pretty much the sole reason the 3rd line was pinned in their own zone for a while there.

...

Wings are doing a great job of gaining the offensive zone but not much possession after that. One and done off the rush...

Z looks awesome in the early going but he's getting no support from his linemates.

Yemack 11-05-2009 08:05 PM

Looks like San Jose want it more

Matt714* 11-05-2009 08:06 PM

Sharks are playing sloppy.

Wings aren't capitalizing, sadly.

Love those Helm odd-man rushes.

detredWINgs 11-05-2009 08:12 PM

That was a sweet tip from Eaves, but Nabby was there.

Not a bad period from the Wings, but they're losing a lot of physical battles.

Yemack 11-05-2009 08:13 PM

this is a pretty good game

tmf2204 11-05-2009 08:15 PM

Wings outshot 11-7 in the period but they've been the better team. Homer had a chance in close, Leino had a couple, deflections off the post...

PK was great thanks to Helm and Maltby.
