New York Rangers All-Decade: Worst of the Worst Defense (vote 3)

So the tiebreaker gives a narrow victory to Guy Hebert for the backup goalie spot. With that we have Mike Dunham and Guy Hebert as our 1 and 2 goalies.

For defense, the minimum games requirement was set to 25 regular season games. I have deemed 18 defensemen worthy of being put up for vote, so we will do two rounds of 9 defensemen in which the top 3 from each group will be selected to the roster. From there we'll make the pairings.

Again, you're picking the worst, not the best.

Ulanov and Pilon, write in Purinton

FLYLine24* 11-18-2009 05:51 PM

Purinton would run away with this if he was listed.

There are two polls. Three defensemen will be picked from this list and 3 from the other.

hlundqvist30* 11-18-2009 05:56 PM

This was a bit harder for me than the goalies because I feel like the gap between them all is much narrower.

I feel like Malik will be a popular option, but his first season was pretty solid and he does have the greatest shootout moment in its existence.

nyr2k2 11-18-2009 06:16 PM

Hatcher, Pilon, Ulanov.

t3hg00se 11-18-2009 07:44 PM

His name is freaking Pilon. Pilon.

TheHotRock 11-18-2009 08:14 PM

don't forget dave karpa in the next one

Of course he's on it. How could we possibly do this without him on the ballot?

Stephane Quintal
Dale Purinton
Alexei Gusarov
Dave Karpa
Tom Poti
Joel Bouchard
Thomas Pock
Maxim Kondratiev
Dmitri Kalinin

That's part two, so anyone inquiring about any players not on this list should look at this one. Ufortunately, greats such as Darren Van Impe and Jason Doig had to be left off due to the 25 game cutoff.

I just got a text from Bruce Driver. He's mad as heck that he is not on this list and said that when he sees the OP, he's going to poke check you to death and hit you with his purse.

QFT. This one is no contest.

Mironov played decently for us, he isn't even close to the worst. And Malik, for all the abuse he took, played much better than the three above.

Ulanov was the worst defenseman I've seen on this team that I can remember, period. He was godawful here.

SingnBluesOnBroadway 11-19-2009 08:39 AM

Malik should not be on this list.

You can text Bruce back and tell him that he didn't play for the team this decade.

Same here.

Why does Malakhov have votes?

He wasn't terrible. He'd be under the category of players who failed to live up to the hype.

Hahahahahaha...

We should come up with a top whipping boy list whille we are at it.

Malik, Poti, Rozy, etc...

Smrek and Doig aren't eligible because they didn't play the minimum 25 games.

As for the rest, they both are included in the second part of the polling process for the defensemen.

All of this information is posted above in a previous post. The only one not included that you suggested is Lefebvre, and I think Malik is a better option than Lefebvre, but that's just my opinion.

Bad opinion.

Regardless, I think that Malik is not even close to one of the best three options in this poll. I'm surprised he's gotten so many votes. I attribute it to new fans.

or just the fact that

A) People tend to remember recent events better than past events
B) People give more weight to a bad defender on a good team vs a bad defender on a bad team.

You baited them ;)

Malik helped win games, no really he did. Lefebvre was a nonfactor and we gave him alot of money at the time.

YOUR opinion

Thordic 11-19-2009 11:04 AM

Theres really three categories here.

BAD: These defensemen were just terrible. Goals seemed to be guaranteed whenever they were on the ice. See: Igor Ulanov, Rich Pilon

USELESS: These defensemen were picked up to fill a spot. No one expected anything from them, and they didn't give us anything. They didn't necessarily suck, but they didn't do much that was positive either. See: Joel Bouchard, Sylvain Lefebvre

LETDOWNS: These defensemen were SUPPOSED to anchor our defense, and/or provide offensive support. Usually former stars who showed up here for a paycheck and took a mental nap. See: Vladimir Malakhov, Sandis Ozolinsh

I think too many people are being swayed by the letdowns, or looking back and expecting the useless players to have actually contributed.

EDIT: Tom Poti should be in his own category. He wasn't very good, but he wasn't bad. But he started in a rough spot because a TON of fans were pissed we traded Mike York for him. Even though York turned out to be more useless than Poti overall, he was very popular here before he was traded.
