RDS showed it tonight... Here's a pretty accurate description from a guy I know:

It was the 1995 first round between Quebec and the New York Rangers. Kovalev went down in the Nordiques zone, knew the Nordiques were rushing back down the ice, so he stayed down and pretended that he was dying. Joe Sakic rushed down and scored a goal, but as he took the shot, the whistle went for Kovalev's "injury".

The referee in question was today's Director Of Officiating, Andy van Hellemond. I own the book "Tough Calls", and what happened was that Andy kept looking back to make sure Kovalev wasn't seriously hurt so he could let Quebec get their scoring chance. It just so happened that when Andy looked back the last time, it was just as Sakic was releasing his shot. Andy got the impression that Kovalev could be hurt bad, so he blew his whistle. What Andy did not see, was the puck going into the net just before the whistle was blown. Unfortunately for Quebec, Andy disallowed the goal because his whistle was for Kovalev's "injury", and not Quebec's goal. It was the wrong decision.

If that goal had have stood, Quebec would have likely won the series.

Obviously Andy van Hellemond didn't lose his job. He simply did not earn the privilege to work the rest of the 1995 playoffs.

I have no video. But he pulled a "Ribeiro" (without laughing at the other team). The Nordiques allegedly lost the series because of that. I think the ref lost his job for blowing down the play.

It's debatable. He did take a slash in the back on that play. I remember that very well. If anything it should have been a slashing call anyway.

Good to know that the refs sucked back then too! ;)

It was a one handed slash, didn't look too bad.

Most hockey people seem to think that the refs still care. They don't trust Kovalev since that fateful night.
