Vermette and Umberger for Gomez?

Wtf? I heard this on the Team990 this morning. Is this a legit rumor? Or are they just jerking our chain? I'd hate this deal. Sure you shave cap but You've only had Gomez for 21 games.

Thinkbig 11-20-2009 10:47 AM

Id love it... it will help us tank!

Turtleneck Plek 11-20-2009 10:48 AM

It's probably Marinaro talking out of his ass again.

Anyway, I can't see Gomez being traded after 21 games being well accepted by the other players, especially when guys like Cammy and Gionta said Gomez was part of the reason why they signed with the Habs.

Although, it wouldn't be a bad return. Would mean we are basically scrapping this season, but at least we would have some cap space to play with come offseason.

Anyway, this simply won't happen.

Gomez for Vermette and Umberger

As per Tony's show (not Tony), whispers out of Toronto media suggest that a deal is in the works with Columbus.

To Columbus:

Scott Gomez

To Montreal:

Antoine Vermette + R.J. Umberger

gillyguzzler 11-20-2009 10:51 AM

For Umberger and Vermette... Columbus would never do it. This is simply Marinaro being Marinaro, self serving as usual.

YMCMBeaulieu 11-20-2009 10:52 AM

Vermette just signed a 5 year deal...

This isn't happening.

Habsfan18 11-20-2009 10:53 AM

Why on earth would the Habs trade Gomez 21 games into his Montreal career? And why would Columbus want to take on his contract?

Gary320 11-20-2009 10:53 AM

Im so fed up of Tony. Its disgusting the route he's taking lately.
He's lost all credibility with this bull-**** rumors and sources...

Sports1131 11-20-2009 10:54 AM

I don't think there's any chance that Gainey will even consider trading Gomez during the season, but I'd be thrilled if this were true.

Habs 4 Life 11-20-2009 10:54 AM

And then how do we explain that to Gionta? So far Martin said he is super happy about Gomez play.Unless Scott asked for a trade,I really doubt it

coolasprICE 11-20-2009 10:55 AM

why would columbus do this

JeromeHP 11-20-2009 10:55 AM

columbus would be beyond stupid to make that move

WestIslander 11-20-2009 10:56 AM

Just an FYI (as per my thread) this is not a Marinaro rumor and not as per Marinaro, this is coming from the Toronto media and NOT from Marinaro!

Why did you make another thread instead of just posting that in here?

Kimota 11-20-2009 10:57 AM

Damn Columbus are getting destroyed if this trade occurs.

VAN-HAB 11-20-2009 11:00 AM

Umberger is not a good idea, Tender will just add cheese and EAT him.....
we don't want that.

Bronn 11-20-2009 11:00 AM

I'd do this in a heartbeat but "whispers from Toronto media" ain't exactly a credible source. Not to mention that it would be illogical for the Jackets to pull a move like this.

Marinaro need to stop with those weak rumors. First Cogliano and now this. Hopefully he's not turning into Eklund V 2.0

It doesn't matter. Gomez doesn't have a no-trade clause so Gionta knew there was a risk that they wouldn't be together for his entire time in Montreal. Besides, it's not like Gionta signed here just to play with Gomez; I'm sure that was a factor, but we still probably paid him more than any other team was willing to spend.

As far as I'm concerned Gomez hasn't shown anything to suggest that he's going to improve on his miserable season in New York last year. He's a decent player but is being paid to be one of the best in the NHL -- if Gainey has an opportunity to get out from under that contract in a season with little reason for optimism, he should do it.

waffledave 11-20-2009 11:01 AM

Makes no sense. Gomez hasn't even been playing that bad...He hustles hard, skates fast and his line is producing. He might not be racking up points but his line is producing...And he does have a big part in that. He's usually the guy who carries the puck into the zone. Sucks that he isn't getting the assists on those plays but still...His play has been OK.

His salary sucks, but we aren't in a salary crunch right now. Doesn't make sense to dump him for that at this point in the season. Especially after Gio and Cam said they signed here to play with him.

and Gainey would earn a new contract extension as GM if he could pull it off...

wait, it's his fault for taking on Gomez to begin with.

Hackett 11-20-2009 11:02 AM

Let me guess, is this from Marinaro?

Must we post every rumour he throws out there? He's no more credible than eklund.

I agree that these rumours are a waste of time. However, you guys do allow Eklund threads so I don't know how you can justify getting rid of these ones.

Umberger single handedly killed the habs 2 playoffs ago
