Overview
Extra InformationFew would characterize Mike Babcock as a silver-lining type of guy. Task-oriented, results-driven, no-nonsense, no-excuses-accepted; he's all of that for sure.

But as the Red Wings ended their scoring drought and losing streak with a reaffirming, 4-3 shootout victory in St. Louis on Saturday, Babcock saw a silver lining. "Sometimes going through something like this is good for your team long-term," Babcock said. "We found a few players as time's gone on here and as players were injured, and if you can keep finding players, you have a chance to become a better team."

He was referring to Darren Helm, Derek Meech, Jimmy Howard and Justin Abdelkader, all of whom played strong games in St. Louis. "Helm could have had I don't know how many goals; he was real good," Babcock said. "Abby (Abdelkader) played his best game of the year. We can welcome him to the league if he can play like that every night."

He said Howard was "real good and gave us a chance to win," and would continue to start as long as he stayed hot. About Meech, Babcock said, "Meech was real solid for us tonight. He was involved physically and stepped up and answered the bell."

But maybe more so than the others, Saturday was Abdelkader's breakout game. He was on the ice for a season-high 20 shifts and more than 13 minutes. He not only centered his usual fourth line with Brad May and Drew Miller, Babcock also put him between Tomas Holmstrom and Todd Bertuzzi for a couple of shifts.

He had a team-high five hits, created four quality scoring chances and won five of nine faceoffs. "I am still trying to find my game at this level," Abdelkader said. "For me, it's just getting more comfortable out there. I am getting more opportunity now. Hopefully I can run with it. It's nice when you can play a bit."

Abdelkader and Helm, leaders of the third and fourth lines, lit the fire Saturday after the Wings fell behind 2-0. Both lines were forechecking hard, getting both bodies and pucks to the front of the net and keeping the Blues on their heels.

"They really kept us in the game early when my line and Pav's (Datsyuk) line weren't going good," Henrik Zetterberg said. "It was nice to see. We need those guys to play like that; it really helps. There were times when they kept the puck in the Blues end for a long time and forced them to ice the puck. That allowed us to come on the ice fresh and play against their tired guys."

Helm's line drew the penalty that led to Holmstrom's power-play goal that ended the third-longest scoring drought in team history (175:57). Helm also set up the second goal, passing it through the crease, off Patrick Eaves' skate right to Kris Draper, who buried it.

Abdelkader's line was buzzing throughout the third period. With the score 2-2, Abdelkader set up May in the slot, but May couldn't beat goalie Chris Mason. "We can't always rely on the top two lines to carry us through games," Abdelkader said. "If you can have your third and fourth lines chipping in, creating energy and momentum for the team, it's big."

Abdelkader knows the deal, though. He has to earn his ice time every shift. He played 20 shifts Saturday because he was strong in his first four or five shifts. He does not have the luxury to ease into games. "It's creating the forecheck, holding onto pucks, getting pucks to the net, those kinds of things," he said. "I think I've been doing that, but I've got to bring it every game. I have to bring that level of intensity and energy every game. That's what we're counted on to do."

Perfect 10s
Holmstrom and Zetterberg scored their 10th goals of the season. Holmstrom's ended an 0-for-14 skid on the power play.

Awesome GDT, as usual, and I'm not trying to nitpick but Kronwall isn't projected to play. This is probably an artifact of a copy-and-paste from previous GDT's. The D are likely:

Lidstrom-Ericsson
Lebda-Rafalski
Stuart-Meech

yep, it's 7:30 pm ET. and yes, last_sd is right, when in doubt go to the center of all awesomeness...no, NOT peverley's website, i mean NHL.com.

anyways, enough of awkward, lame attempts at humor, I am really looking forward to this game (not that it's different for other DRW matches), but I want revenge. This time I want 5 goals, top shelf so that the ref can REALLY see it.

And I think I will say this every game day, Let's Go Red Wings, for **** sake!

Frozen Fiend 11-30-2009 04:18 PM

Sweet GDT. Turco in the Joe. Just what our offense needs lol. ;)

Hoping we win, LETS GO RED WINGS!

****in Ericsson!! Why??

detredWINgs 11-30-2009 08:10 PM

Looked like the goal deflected off of Lidstrom, who is pretty much right up there with Bertuzzi in terms of bad breaks when hes on the ice.

And Jimmy needs to control his rebounds. Way too many dangerous rebounds getting into the slot.

And this reffing is ridiculous. Mickey is right. Might as well make this a "no contact" game. Stars are going to hate their penalties when they get them, because these refs are making the cheap calls tonight.
