Your All-Time Sharks Starting Line Up

I know the team isn't even 20 yet, but I've been thinking of what the "all star" starting line up for the Sharks would be, taking players who have played for the Sharks at different eras and putting them together. What would your Sharks all-star team be?

You have to take players based on their top year on the Sharks, not the best year of players who played on the Sharks at some point, so you probably wouldn't put Claude Lemieux, Jeremey Roenick, Rob Blake.

Center: Joe Thornton
Wingers: Owen Nolan, Jonathan Cheechoo
Defense: Dan Boyle, Sandis Ozolinsh
Goalie: Artus Irbe

I think by the end of the year I would have Heatley in place of Cheecho, but I can't bring myself to use a player who hasn't finished a season with the Sharks yet.

The WALL

When did the Sharks have a wall as their goalie?

This reminds me of one of those movies about animals that join sports. "There's nothing in the rule book that says A WALL can't be our goalie..."

Its a question of setting lines that might play well together, and finding the right number of RW and LW's, or players who were "the best." For instance, you easily leave Ricci off as a centre, but are you really going to leave Ricci off as an all-time fan favourite and #5 all-time games played as a Shark? Then a guy like Kipper who many might put ahead of Nabby ... what do you do with him since he's really a Flame and more difficult to identify as a Shark. Or Roenick .... sure Hall of Famer and wildly popular as a Shark. You can leave him off because he didn't play that many games, or include him because he has more goals than anyone who has played for the Sharks.

I going with the ... try and build lines with players who were good Sharks and can/did play the positions.

Marleau - J. Thornton - Nolan (All star scoring line)
Garpenlov - Larinov - Makarov (the OV line)
Sturm - Damphousse - Pavelski (All time 3rd line/scoring line)
Granato - Ricci - Clowe (energy line and chipping in goals)

Hannan - Ozolinsh (Stay at home and best offensive defenseman)
Suter - Marchment (Maybe best 2-way defender and tough physical defenseman)
Boyle - Rathje (Top current defenseman and all-time Shark defenseman in games played)

Nabakov
Irbe

WS, we have a very similar team, but in all honesty, how can you put Garpenlov on the team after "the crossbar"?!

The Nemesis 12-06-2009 09:20 PM

My starting lineup:

Selanne - Bell - Guerin

Campbell - Jillson

Belfour

What? :sarcasm:

sjsharky 12-06-2009 09:20 PM

goalie is hard to pick...irbe probably wouldn't work to well in today's game, goaltending had changed so much.

I take into consideration that we won .... what 17 games in the year before we beat Detroit? While we have had a gut load of failure in the P/O's since that season, at least in that year we exceeded expectations even getting to the playoffs and Garpenlov hit a crossbar in O.T. of game 6 vs Toronto that could have sent us to the SCF ...... that's how close it was. It would have been the greatest turnaround in the history of sports. Not just worst to first, but a record losing streak in one year, to within a cross bar of going to the Stanley Cup Finals.....just imagine .....

..... and thats why 15 years later I still honor Larinonov in my avi. There may have been more skilled players who have been on the team in their primes, but there has never been a team before or since that almost pulled off what the 94 Sharks did. (and look at the pass from Larionov at 1.19. Who makes that pass on this team?)

Sunstrom, Norton, Stuey, Friesen, Duchesne, Cheech, Kisio, S Thornton, and Vernon are all worthy choices. Odgers, Gaetz, and McSorley also deserve mention..... and perhaps D Wilson just because he came and opened the doors as our first Captain with some level of credibility. He didn't have to come to an expansion team that was screwed in the expansion draft and would not be a good team in any short horizon. He did it because it was good for the game and his place in hockey.

I don't think stopping the puck has changed that much. Irbe in that one year was pretty good and would be still good IMO. That said, I'll take Nabby as more consistent. I still wonder how Archie would have done in the ensuing years had he not had the dog bite his hand.

he'd probably be like the Irbe that led Carolina to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Thanks for the video WS, that was pretty awesome. I'd forgotten how good Irbe was (stupid me). Garpenlov's cross bar can't take him off the list any more than Patty's "hop" or Joe Thornton's never getting as far as Garp did keeps them off.

I gotta think that Whitney and Bakes would also deserve some consideration from the old days, for their overall play and their respective playoff series winning plays.

I still think Iafrate was the best Dman we ever had, if only he'd been able to play more than 10 games a season or whatever.

I kinda miss the ol' days when we had no expectations.

Blades of Glory 12-07-2009 11:34 PM

If I had to pick a team that would actually win and not a team based on who played the longest and is loved the most, here goes. No Heatley. Only players who played at least two full seasons. Keeping them in position.

Marleau-Thornton-Selanne (No doubt about this one)
Whitney-Damphousse-Nolan (Damphousse and Nolan had great chemistry)
Friesen-Larionov-Makarov (Blazing speed separated by one of the best passers ever)
Clowe-Ricci-Pavelski (OK, I moved Pavelski out of position)

Hannan-Boyle
Ozolinsh-Marchment
Suter-McLaren

Nabokov
Irbe

For real. 2000 second round exit: WOO HOO, BEYOND EXPECTATIONS.
2008 second round exit: CHRIST WE SUCK.

Every time the Sharks have been in a 1 v 8 series, 8 has won.

One reason it didnt bother me was that old, established teams were winning the cup back then. Now that franchises that sucked with the Sharks, like Ottawa and Anaheim and Carolina, are making the finals (or winning them), I feel left out.
