I cant imagine my holidays getting more shltty but let's see.

Please play Thrashers, please ...oh yeah and win.

AintLifeGrand 12-26-2009 11:52 AM

Tampa Bay:

Last 10: Atlanta 3-6-1; Tampa Bay 3-6-1

Season series: These Southeast Division rivals meet for the third time this season and the first time in Tampa Bay. The Lightning have split a pair of games at Philips Arena, losing 6-3 in the opener for both teams on Oct. 3 and coming back for a 4-3 overtime win last month. Ondrej Pavelec was in goal for the Thrashers in both games.

Big story: Just a single point separates the sixth seed from the 10th in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta comes out of the Christmas break in possession of the No. 6 spot by virtue of having played one fewer game than Ottawa, but the Thrashers have struggled of late, in large part due to some defensive liabilities. Meanwhile, the Lightning have faded to a tie for 11th following a fast start, and need to establish some positive momentum as the second half approaches.

Team Scope:

Thrashers: With a team goals-against average of 3.11, Atlanta currently ranks 26th in the League. None of the four teams with a worse GAA is currently in the top eight in its respective conference, and the Thrashers won't be for much longer if they don't get their act together. They come off a 6-4 loss in Boston on Wednesday that marked the fifth straight game their opponent scored at least four goals.

"At the 10-minute mark, we let down for about a minute there and we got a little discombobbled and they scored a couple of quick goals," coach John Anderson said of a stretch in the first period where the Bruins opened the scoring with three goals in a span of 68 seconds.

Lightning: After making it nearly two months into the season without failing to pick up at least a point in every game at the St. Pete Times Forum, it's now three straight losses in regulation on home ice after Tampa Bay fell 5-2 to Philadelphia on Wednesday. Zenon Konopka and Victor Hedman scored goals to lift the Lightning into a tie heading into the third, but Blair Betts and Mike Richards each scored his second of the night to spark the Flyers.

"I think we had a couple of chances there, but I think there was that one shot to decide the game, and they [the Flyers] got it," coach Rick Tocchet said. "All we needed were a couple of good passes and big plays, especially in the third period. I think now the pressure is on. You have to have that one guy who makes that one play."

Who's hot: Ilya Kovalchuk continues to state his case for a lucrative, long-term contract. The Atlanta sniper has posted five goals and seven assists during an eight-game points streak. Nik Antropov has scored five goals in as many games. Maxim Afinogenov has two goals and six assists in his last five games.

Martin St. Louis has a goal and five assists in Tampa Bay’s last three games. Ryan Malone has two goals and four assists during the same span. Steven Stamkos has four goals in his last five games.

Injury report: Goalie Kari Lehtonen (back surgery) and defenseman Mark Popovic (broken foot) are out for the Thrashers. ... Defenseman Matt Walker and forwards Jeff Halpern and Todd Fedoruk are all nursing lower-body injuries for the Lightning. Walker did not play against the Flyers. Halpern and Fedoruk were both in the lineup.

Stat pack: Tobias Enstrom leads Atlanta with 26 assists and ranks third among NHL defensemen, behind only Toronto’s Tomas Kaberle (31) and Washington’s Mike Green (28). Enstrom, in his third season, is tied for 11th overall in the category.

Puck drop: "Tonight I thought we really had that momentum," Tocchet said after Wednesday’s loss. "I could feel it. I know it's there. We've got Atlanta coming in so after a loss like this I'm glad we have the next two days off. If we had won I would say let's play again tomorrow, but I think with the next few days off, we need to regroup."

Gotta bring out the big guns to turn this team around

Dans 12-26-2009 12:02 PM

Pavalec to start.

Is he being showcased?

ThrasherMinion 12-26-2009 12:39 PM

Telfo 12-26-2009 12:44 PM

Telfo 12-26-2009 01:18 PM

Mike Smith is starting instead of Nittymaki. VICTORY (or at least a chance)

Juzmo 12-26-2009 01:25 PM

Play and win ...thats all I am asking Thrashers.

BreakTheWallsDown 12-26-2009 02:35 PM

The pictures were going so well at first.

I was like holy **** beer, chick-fil-a, zaxby's... whats next!? Then I saw Varsity food and I had to go throw up.

John Cena* 12-26-2009 02:54 PM

hopefully DW is showcasing tonight.

Shameus 12-26-2009 03:36 PM

Thrashers need this win. Team is on the road, which is a plus, and have been playing more than 3rd period hockey lately so I am feeling positive about this one.

Oh, and ALG, a little over the top with the pics there, just a little.

Johnny8242 12-26-2009 05:05 PM

Not sure what's wrong with that. Have to give the kid a chance to rebuild his confidence.

As long as our team plays defense in front of him, things should go well. Remember, only one of those goals was really his fault. Goals two and three were major lapses in defense.

Edit: Hedberg in net, not Pavelec, as per the pregame on the radio.

Edit 2: Apparently, it is Pavelec in net. They lied to me. :(

John Cena* 12-26-2009 06:58 PM

Nik Antropov!!! Kovy'spoint streak continues...

1-0 Thrashers

Bubbles99 12-26-2009 07:00 PM

Antro just keeps on producing!

John Cena* 12-26-2009 07:03 PM

And there goes Pavelec flopping around on the ice like a fish way out of the crease.

ThrasherMinion 12-26-2009 07:05 PM

how much more of this crappy soft defensive pairing of Bogonowhere and Hainsey can we take? Please split them up!

Shameus 12-26-2009 07:13 PM

Would somebody tell Kovy it's a PP and not the frig'n ice capades!!!!!

John Cena* 12-26-2009 07:19 PM

Well this game could easily get out of hand for any side.

Nice PP chances, just couldn't finish. Max with a good bid from Kovy with like 2 seconds left but missed it.

John Cena* 12-26-2009 07:38 PM

System is so bad again. cycle cycle cycle, breakout pass, turnover, goal. 4 or 5 times already this period. Luckily it isn't 4-1 Tampa.

2-1 Tampa

Bubbles99 12-26-2009 07:39 PM

the 2nd period is the new 1st period for the thrashers...:help:

Shameus 12-26-2009 07:39 PM

Wow, what a shocker, Bogo's man scores.

John Cena* 12-26-2009 07:43 PM

Wow i just put on the USA-Slovakia game to check the score and JP Dellacamera is announcing it... When did he get a job with NHL Network?
