Any chance of throwing a WJC table up?

Thanks to all the posters in part 1 who watch these kids and know the know. Makes it very convenient for people like me!

Can someone "in the know" tell me how Werek projects as a player in the future? I mean, I've heard his future is at the wing, but his numbers as a center in the O are impressive and others on this site seem to say he'll be a center in the future.

Fitzy 12-31-2009 11:19 AM

Man Hillier was a bad pick. Not that the late rounds of that draft have produced much of anything anyways.

I think it's a little too early to tell. People always say "He projects as winger" when a players skating, and playmaking abilities are in question. However, he's improved in both departments considerably this season.

Again, it's too early to tell, IMO, but I think he could be a very good 3rd liner, or a solid 2nd liner. Then again, he's one of those kids that shows flashes of possibly being something more.

Thanks.
His size is definitely something that may change over the next two years, hopefully, we will be able to tell where he sits positionally when he plays in Traverse City and Prospects camp next year.

Also, as a side note, we were having a discussion about Hagelin in the Wolfpack thread. He's a speedy winger that is great defensively, here is a video from two years ago, 0:50 mark:

What aspects of his game have caused problems? And what kind of ice time has he gotten?

I never understood that. PPG as a 20 year old in the Q is very impressive for anyone who knows hockey, but it doesn't exactly scream top 6 role in the NHL.

And overage player scoring a PPG isnt that impressive in the Q.

His size and strength make him easily projectable as a winger. Most of the better players in Juniors are centers. When they reach the pros the better playmakers are usually kept at center.

I liken it to high school baseball. The better athletes are at the shortstop and pitcher positions. When they reach college not everyone can be a pitcher/shortstop. Same as football with high school QB's/RB's. Many go on to play WR's/DB's/LB's in college.

I was going to say that, but then the cliche phrase "better then you could ever do" popped into my head, so I was complimenting Hillier for becoming a pretty good hockey player. Yes, in the prospect world that PPG never amounts to much.

Hillier was PPG in the Q as a 19, didn't play in the Q last year (his 20 year-old season). The problem with Ryan is same problem his entire Halifax team had his 19 year-old season...lots of skilled players but at crunch time they all became puck hogs (making them remarkably easy to stop). The only exception to this was Voracek who seemed to never touch the puck when the game was on the line (despite being the best player on the team).

Ethan Werek has a goal today

Werek would be on pace for about 95 points right now if he wasn't injured earlier. Not bad

He'd be on pace for about 80 points. He only missed 3 games this season.

I haven't seen him play in the WJC at all but it seems odd to me that he's been so bad. I've watched him play every game in Chilliwack this year and he's been solid. Powerplay, even strength, killing penalties. His defensive game is much improved. His offensive play is unreal.

Whoops, I keep thinking they play 80 games in the OHL.

silverfish 01-01-2010 04:38 PM

Saw a friend of mine at a New Years party last night who goes to Michigan.

Says he loves Hagelin. Loves his speed, and said that he's a team captain.

Awesome stuff.
