MSG contract with DirecTV expires tonight *UPDATE 1/4/10: Contract Renewed*

MSG and DirecTV are negotiating, but word is DirecTV is balking at the increase MSG is looking for. Yes, there will be many jokes that this is a good thing for Ranger (and Knick) fans, the bottom line is there is a chance tonight's game could be the last one one on DirecTV in a while.

If DirecTV drops MSG you will not be able to see Ranger games even if you subscribe to NHL Center Ice, as the other team's broadcast will still be blacked out. This has nothing to to with the DirecTV/Versus situation, but could keep Rangers games off DirecTV in a similar fashion.

The good news is there has been no posturing by DirecTV like they did before the Versus contract expired, when they ran a scroll the last couple of weeks Versus was still on the air, stating we could be losing that channel. They haven't done that this time.

The bad news is the Dolans have a long history of the type of impasses that keep product off TV for months or even years.

Hopefully the two are negotiating as I type this...

You won't be missing much.

There are many layers to this.

First joke only took 16 minutes! Now let's have a 'Drury won't let that ruin his (fill in the blank)' and we're all good.

What does that mean?

It means there are large issues between Dolan and DIRECTV.

Yeah Dolan doesn't want MSG on DirecTV so people have to subscribe to Cablevision. Same thing Comcast does in Philadelphia and in the Northwest.

No, it goes deeper than that.

Such as why Cablevision doesn't carry NFL Network.

Great, first Versus and now MSG? I hadn't even known about this until today. Honestly, I don't even know what to say. It's been disappointment after disappointment this season with anything Rangers related

That's between Cablevision and the NFL.

Partially. Dolan is pissed that DIRECTV has a monopoly on NFL Sunday Ticket.

There is a business reason why the NFL lets someone like DirecTV have a monopoly on it. But the bottom line is, that is between Dolan and the NFL.

Inferno 12-31-2009 09:54 AM

are you sure that the other networks will also be blacked out for Ranger games?

Maybe. But you're the one who will be without MSG. Dolan doesn't know how to separate the two.

And the business decision the NFL is making is flawed.

in the NY/metropolitan area I'd imagine that'd be the case

Inferno 12-31-2009 09:56 AM

what about here in Atlanta? I would assume I would still get the alternate broadcasts right?

StvBroDan 12-31-2009 09:57 AM

Good Maybe I will start getting Devils,Rangers,Islander games down in Hunterdon County.

Comcast Land

Well, as for me, there is a way for locals to get other teams' broadcasts through DirecTV. And yes, the Dolans have proven over the years how petty than can be.

I think we can agree the NFL is pretty good at making business decisions. They dwarf the other sports leagues.

Dolan would have the option of allowing the other team's broadcast to be shown, but that would pretty much defeat the whole purpose.

If you are in MSG territory you won't get them.

They do. But the fact still remains that by having that monopoly with DIRECTV, they're leaving a large number of customers out of the picture. And that is never a good business decision.

Yes. Only the local area is affected. You can continue to watch the SD Rangers broadcasts, or the other team's broadcast.
