GAME PREIVEW

Last 10: Los Angeles 5-5-0; San Jose 8-1-1.

Season series: Fourth of six meetings this season. San Jose makes trips to Los Angeles on Jan. 11 and 19. The Kings have taken two of the three games played this season, 6-4 at Staples Center on Oct. 6 and 5-4 in overtime at HP Pavilion on Dec. 9. The Sharks won on home ice 2-1 in a shootout on Oct. 28.

Big story: If the Kings want to end a six-season playoff drought, they need to show upper-echelon teams like the Sharks that they're for real, and that's exactly what they've done from the opening week of the season. They earned a point in the first matchup in San Jose and came away with two in the most recent meeting, thanks to Dustin Brown's goal 1:18 into the extra period.

"I think, for our confidence, it's big," Los Angeles forward Anze Kopitar said. "We came here, and the first one we lost in a shootout, and then this one we won in OT. That's a hard place to play in. The crowd is right on top of you. It's loud all the time. The place is rocking. I've seen some teams come in here and just melt down. I think we really showed our character."

Team Scope:

Kings: With the remainder of the Western Conference taking Monday off, Los Angeles could jump two points ahead of Vancouver and into a three-way tie for fifth with Calgary and Nashville by defeating San Jose. The Kings have followed up a four-game losing streak with a pair of quality wins, including a 2-1 victory against the Capitals on Saturday. Michal Handzus had the decisive shorthanded goal early in the third period.

"The last two games have been character games," coach Terry Murray said. "Today it was against one of the premier teams in the game and the top offensive team in the League. So we had to come out and play with the right attitude and play intelligently."

Sharks: After a five-game skid in early December, San Jose has responded with eight consecutive victories to reclaim the Western Conference lead. This is the second of four straight at home for the Sharks, and they started on the right foot with a 4-1 win over the Oilers on Saturday. Patrick Marleau scored his team-leading 26th goal of the season and Dany Heatley added his 24th.

"It's not like anyone here is through the roof," said defenseman Douglas Murray, who added his third career goal. "You obviously want to get the Presidents' Trophy in the regular season. But it's the playoffs that really count. We just have to keep getting our game better."

Who's hot: Kings forward Ryan Smyth has scored goals in two straight games after being left off Canada's roster for the upcoming Olympic Games. Goalie Jonathan Quick, who made the U.S. team, has won consecutive starts while stopping 53 of 56 shots for a .946 save percentage. Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov has allowed two goals or less in eight consecutive starts, going 7-0-1 in that stretch with a .947 save percentage.

Stat pack: San Jose's eight regulation losses are the fewest in the League, two less than Chicago and New Jersey. Handzus now has 16 career shorthanded goals.

Puck drop: Don't think for a moment that the Sharks are going to get complacent with how well things have gone of late.

"Take a look at the standings," captain Rob Blake said. "You win eight in a row but you don't jump way too far ahead of anyone. So we need to keep winning."

A nice early GDT, we've played well vs the fish, hopefully we can keep that going tonight.

Go Kings!!

Muzzinga 01-04-2010 02:09 PM

Is Stoll really expected to play?

Willard 01-04-2010 02:24 PM

Stoll is expected to play, but probably not max minutes yet.

He'll be back taking selected faceoffs of course and will apparently get some power play time.

Music to my ears brutha.

Johnjm22, just out of curiosity, how long does it take for you to post a GDT?

In any case, thanks as always for putting in your time and effort.

JDM 01-04-2010 02:35 PM

Should be a good game.

Quick's game.

That is all.

Shellz 01-04-2010 02:36 PM

Win. Win. Win.

Telos 01-04-2010 02:42 PM

We sure as hell better win while I am in the stands wearing a Kings jersey in a sea of turquoise... GO KINGS! Give me heckling powers!

Cruel11 01-04-2010 02:58 PM

Just came back from the Sharks GDT. Does anyone else find it weird that the "Kings fan" Winsomemore is always and only on the GDTs of the opposing teams? It's awkward that he always wishes the opposing team good luck while I hope for them to crash and burn.

Cutty Sarkn3ss* 01-04-2010 03:36 PM

Maybe he's somewhat of a internet Kings ambassador. . .

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I'll have to time myself one of these days. I've got a template that I use, so it's only a matter of changing out the images and information. But it still can be a fairly time consuming process.

Sharkalchemy 01-04-2010 04:05 PM

Winsonmore must be high if he thinks Marleau is going to be a King next year. That ship sailed last summer when Doug Wilson proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he and PM are adjoined at the hip.

I don't wish the Kings luck, though I do think its better that the Kings are playing well this year and not a doormat. Nice to see the young talent take form and become a good team. Besides our codgers doing their thing, Jamie McGinn has been a mini-marleau of late and is one of those under the radar players you may notice tonight.

KingsRule 01-04-2010 04:11 PM

Weve had the sharks number so far this season. hopefully it continues tonight!! GO KINGS!!

SLang 01-04-2010 04:37 PM

While I would NEVER diss johnjm22's GDT's because they're great, I just hope the Kings aren't beaten like our GDT is beaten by the Sharks board's GDT....that first post is classic!....LOL

Yes, very.

lumbergh 01-04-2010 04:42 PM

Kings can't score, Sharks haven't allowed more than two goals in a game since they last played the Kings, almost A MONTH AGO. Quick better be good tonight.

SLang 01-04-2010 04:49 PM

Hmmm. Sharks with an 8-game win streak. I like the statistical probabilities on this one.... :)

Sharkalchemy 01-04-2010 05:15 PM

Sharks haven't played all that well in about half of those 8 wins. Nabby is in rare form of late and has stolen a few. I anticipate the Sharks to be motivated specifically against the Kings because of how well L.A. has played them this year.

Normally the 8 game streak does have that statistical view of a coming Loss...but with the Shootouts anymore, alot of those win streaks are a little padded these days. I say the Sharks win tonight because they are do to have a good game against the Kings, who no longer will be sneaking up on the Sharks.

Our next trap game is the Blues on Wed. Sharks may coast on that one...then Detriot Saturday and against the Kings again Monday. 3 games this month against the Kings. I'll play it safe and say Sharks win on home ice tonight and hopefully split the remaining two in L.A. later this month.

GO KINGS!!!

Kings 5-1 (why NOT be an optimist? - and while I'm at it, Kopitar scores twice)

Cruel11 01-04-2010 07:21 PM

Kings win 4-2.

I'm guessing this is the lineup for tonight:

Smyth/Kopi/Brown
Frolov/Zeus/Segal or Moller
Parse/Richardson/Simmonds
Ivanans/Stoll/Moller or Segal
