Fri Jan 22: Poni worth a 2nd

Quote:

In an informal survey of NHL executives and general managers conducted by The Toronto Sun at the 2010 NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game at the WFCU Centre in Windsor on Wednesday, Ponikarovsky was the one Leaf not named Tomas Kaberle who respondents felt would land Toronto the most lucrative return.

I think you might be able to get a late second-round pick for him, one GM said. Hes a big body guy who could go to the dirty areas in front of the net. He has some good hands too.

I dont think you would get much more than that. Hes not as refined as Antropov.
Pretty interesting read

Didn't need an article to tell us that but whoop-de-doo for the 2nd round pick.

it also goes on to talk about how players like Stajan and Stempniak have value too, but not as much as Poni.

dacoach 01-22-2010 11:28 AM

it's a different year, comparing him to what Antropov got last year is meaningless. Each year has a different market. Some years people overpay, others like last year, people are more stingy on giving up assets.

John-Eric Iannicello 01-22-2010 11:32 AM

When I was at the WFCU, I only saw two NHL GMs there - Don Waddel and Ken Holland (they were sitting together in the press box). Not saying there weren't more, but for conversation purposes.

And we don't know what 'market' there is for Ponikarovsky until the deadline. All it takes is a few teams being interested to raise his value (and that goes for any player). That being said, a 2nd round pick is pretty much what most on here speculate as a return for him.

I saw Zeisberger there also talking with Maple Leafs scout Dave Morrison.

Stajan would have more, I would think. Stempniak none at all.

bleeney 01-22-2010 11:38 AM

Are we going to re-sign him? I doubt it. And even if we are, we could do it on July 1st regardless of where he finishes the year.

We need draft picks. If someone offers us a 2nd for Poni to be a rent-a-player, jump on it.

Mess 01-22-2010 11:40 AM

A late 2nd round pick from #50-60 overall pick in the next draft, would seem to be the best one could hope for Pony in trade.

gabeliscious 01-22-2010 11:44 AM

a 2nd is pretty good, even the deadlast 2nd round pick would be higher then anything we currently hold :help:

Volcanologist 01-22-2010 11:47 AM

A "late 2nd round pick"? pretty crappy return for a useful player.

I'd rather just keep him, depending on cost, or try to get a young body in return for Poni. The chances a late 2nd rounder will turn out to be as good as Poni are minimal.

Stephen 01-22-2010 11:50 AM

If two or three teams really want Poni for a second and think he can be of real benefit, and all offer the second round pick, obviously the Leafs would be able to squeeze a bit more out of that.

Dave Morrison On the Kessel Trade:

When we made the deal for Phil, Brian talked to me ahead of time, Morrison said. I was fine with it. I mean, this kid is a very talented player who is still very young.

Knowing how Morrison evaluates young talent, isnt that a good sign?
Wouldnt he have a good idea about what is available this draft?

SprDaVE 01-22-2010 11:54 AM

It really depends on which GM is speaking about X player.

Some GM's might not see any value out of Poni because their team doesn't really need him, some teams might think he's exactly what their team need. If there's more than one team that needs him, then the price goes up.

The GM that spoke in the article doesn't seem to see much out of Ponikarovsky, or he's trying to down play his value for his own benefit. I mean a big body player that goes in the dirty areas and also has good hands? That's worth a little more than a simply late 2nd round pick to me.

Mess 01-22-2010 11:54 AM

Sadly, players like Pony and Stajan could be actually be kept at the right price of $3 mil or less.

A 2nd line of Pony -- Stajan -- Hagman isn't all that bad for secondary scoring IF you had a real 1st line.

Its really Jason Blake, Jeff Finger, along with some pending UFAs like Tosaka and Exelby need to go ASAP.

SteveV* 01-22-2010 11:57 AM

You mean teams aren't lining up to take that top 2 centerman Matt Stajan? Shocking, must not read these boards.

bobermay 01-22-2010 12:01 PM

That GM should get charged for Tampering! :P

Seriosly though... I'd be slightly disapointed if it was just a 2nd. Maybe a 2nd and a late round pick/ low level prospect.

mcphllp 01-22-2010 12:02 PM

i cant wait for poni and stajan to be gone, man i hope they get traded at the deadline

Yes, it would be very sad if we signed good players to reasonable contracts.

...what?

What is Morrison's track record that makes his opinion one of value?

The past The Hockey News Future Watch ranked Leafs under 21 prospects #29 of 30 teams overall..

Morrison's drafts were from 2006-2009 and the exact players in question here that place Leafs prospect pool at the near bottom of the NHL in a comparison of other teams.

The only drafted players under Morrison that have played on the Leafs this year are Euro's Kulemin, Gunnarsson and Stalberg, Schenn and 3 of those are more likely to be here as a result of Chief Euro Amateur Scout Thommie Bergman. The other Luke Schenn as the only NA player and many question his selection were it was made at #5 overall.

Hypothetically speaking, do you think that if Morrison disagreed with Burke he would have openly denounce it to the media?

Is your opinion better than his? I don't think so.

Significantly greater than yours or anyone here.

Calling the guy a liar is a brilliant tactic. No one can come up with any proof against that. Well done.

And what re-sign for around 4 mil a year? What is with you guys and wanting to keep the same guys year and year after year. Poni is a decent player, but he's now 29 or 30, he is not in our future plans why not get an asset for him? I see no point in re-signing him.
If we can get a 2nd round pick you do it.
