GAME PREIVEW
Last 10: Los Angeles 6-4-0; Detroit 5-3-2.

Season series: Third of four meetings this season. Detroit has captured the first two, 5-2 at Joe Louis Arena on Oct. 15 (defensemen Jonathan Ericsson, Brian Rafalski and Nicklas Lidstrom all had two-point nights, combining for two goals and four assists) and 2-1 at the Staples Center on Jan. 7 (Darren Helm scored with just 17.7 seconds left in regulation). Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard each have a win in goal for the Red Wings.

Big story: It's been almost eight years since the Kings last found themselves in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it's been almost as long since they enjoyed any sort of sustained success against the Red Wings. Detroit has won 22 of the 24 meetings since Feb. 24, 2003. The last victory for Los Angeles came nearly two years ago, on Feb. 7, 2008. If this is, indeed, a breakthrough season for the Kings, ending this bugaboo would be a good way of showing it.

Team Scope:

Kings: The next time Los Angeles finds itself in a shootout, it's safe to say the Kings will feel comfortable. After a 4-3 win over Buffalo on Thursday that came via the penalty-shot tiebreaker, they have taken four straight and seven of their last eight. Surprisingly, that still hasn't changed coach Terry Murray's opinion of the event.

"I hate the shootout, personally," Murray said. "I had nothing to do with it. I'm standing at the back of the bench and I've got my arms crossed and I'm totally out of it. That's the one thing I hate about it. But the fans love it. Not one fan left. Everyone was standing up, and we got two points."

Red Wings: Last weekend was frustrating for Detroit, which lost shootouts on consecutive days against Dallas and Chicago. Then the Red Wings failed to close out a game they led in Washington, allowing two goals 46 seconds apart and falling 3-2 to the Capitals. But they overcame adversity Thursday night in Minnesota, coming back after blowing a 3-1 third-period lead to defeat the Wild 4-3 in an eight-round shootout.

"They scored two goals -- one off the glass tonight and then one with a pop fly that he grabbed and shot in our net," coach Mike Babcock said in assessing the Minnesota rally. "Those were pretty fortunate bounces. Even though we gave up the two-goal lead it wasn't like they came out and tilted the rink."

Who's hot: Kings forward Wayne Simmonds has two goals and two assists during a four-game points streak. Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves has scored goals in two of the last three games.

Stat pack: Quick has yet to break through against the Wings, going 0-5-0 with a 3.43 goals-against average in his career. Detroit is 6-1-1 in its last eight at the Joe, with Lidstrom (two goals, six assists) and Todd Bertuzzi (five goals, two assists) leading the charge.

Puck drop: These two teams had been battling for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference before a freefall by Calgary bumped the Kings and Red Wings into seventh and eighth, respectively, and dropped the Flames into ninth. Still, with just a single point separating these teams, Saturday's game shapes up as a pivotal one.

MxH0CKEY 01-23-2010 01:10 PM

No blowout with Howard in net. But I believe Kings will come out with tons of intensity. 4-3 Kings! John I swear you make the greatest GDTs ever! :yo:

johnjm22 01-23-2010 01:28 PM

Going into the season who would have ever thought we'd have a top line of Richardson-Kopitar-Simmonds?

When you trade away a 2nd round pick to acquire someone, you expect them to make the team.

rapots 01-23-2010 01:47 PM

We win this one...at last. GO Kings!

shaddow44 01-23-2010 01:54 PM

... Based on recent events, the Kings would have to get about 500 shots on goal to score ten on Howard. That would probably be a record.

JDM 01-23-2010 02:28 PM

For those that still haven't seen the highly relevant, highly hilarious video a Sharks fan posted in the comments of lakingsnews... do yourselves a favor and give yourselves a laugh: http://lakingsnews.com/2010/01/07/i-...ings/#comments

I was half joking with my 10 goals prediction but hey, I'm definitely expecting a win. and if takes 500 shots for the "W", then so be it.

Don't pat yourself too hard on the back. If he didn't step it up at just the right time, we'd still be saying the same things.

Malice430 01-23-2010 05:43 PM

no Ivanans + no jones = WIN :naughty:

Herby 01-23-2010 05:44 PM

Is anyone else as excited as I am that for the second straight game we don't have to watch Ivanans and Jones?

So nice to be able to roll 4 good lines, and not have the potential for a major Jones gaffe.

Lets hope TM is finally getting the message that Ivanans is worthless and we need 4 good lines now and into the playoffs to be competitive.

Please just win...I'm so sick of all my friends back in Michigan always rubbing it into me about how the Wings own the Kings.

GO KINGS!

GO KINGS!

Just tell them that despite the last decade of domination by the Wings, the Kings still lead in the all-time record between the two. :)

TonySCV 01-23-2010 05:57 PM

It's Detroit gang.. let's not get too excited. The Kings are snakebit when it comes to playing the Wings.

They find more ways to lose when playing the Wings than any other team in the league. I wish I knew what it is, but it's between the ears - particularly this year when the Wings are very beatable on any given night.

I'd love to see the Kings just take Detroit to the cleaners one of these games but it's just not going to happen until they start playing to win vs. trying not to lose.

Shellz 01-23-2010 06:03 PM
