Staal or Kopitar?

So, I was looking at the 2005 draft and it got me thinking. Assuming the Kings passed on Kopitar and knowing what we do today, who do you draft? Staal or Kopitar?

This is a hypothetical. If your going to waste our time posting things like "But they did draft Kopitar" don't even post here

I think I still draft Staal. This team would have serious problems without Staal for the last 3 years.

New York RKY 01-23-2010 06:48 PM

I said Kopitar becuase if we could throw him on a line with Gaborik that would be deadly. But don't get me wrong I'm thrilled we have Staal too haha.

LyNX27 01-23-2010 06:54 PM

I feel like you might only see this on the Rangers boards...

bumrusherer 01-23-2010 06:55 PM

Staal for me...

Biased? yes but who cares :)

Hanke 01-23-2010 06:55 PM

i pick staal, i dont want to move him just yet, he still hasnt reached his potiental yet and I think he has super star potiental.

HockeyBasedNYC 01-23-2010 06:57 PM

thats tough. I love Staals game - but considering goals win games and the Rangers have a hard time putting the puck in the net - Ill go with Kopitar. At least you still have Henrik then.

Agreed. If you're going to play this game, why not on a player who was actually available to the Rangers when they selected, as in:

Staal or Stastny?

Because A)I don't know much about Stastny... B)I thought it would be much closer if I chose someone as skilled as Kopitar. Anyways...

Why did you even post anything in this thread? Seriously. Why?

Then the choice would be a helluva lot easier. I would choice Staal any day over Stastny becuase Stastny isn't a game breaker like Kopitar is/could be.

Because its a no brainer... I don't think you like my explination any more than my original response.

Absolutely. This will be an exercise in blatant home-grown player bias.

How many 80+ point players are there in the league...

How many #1 D-Men are in the league... How important are they when you have Crosby, Malkin, Richards, Carter, Elias etc.. etc..

I actually prefer "its a no brainer" because it shows that in your eyes... It's an open and close case. Of course you failed to mention who you voted for but I'm gonna assume its not staal. your first response, however, hinted at NOTHING.

Here are some guys that are teetering on the edge, but just aren't there yet or are close right now.

Seabrook
Green
Robidas
Rafalski
Visnovsky
E. Johnson
Myers
Staal
Burns
Staal is close but not there.

Kopitar everyday, twice Sunday, yada yada. Not saying Staal is miles behind in value, but Kopitar is the type of talent you can build a team around.

HVPOLARBEARS19 01-23-2010 07:53 PM

I like Staal, but don't love him. I don't think he'll ever be a superstar/Norrs winner/all star, but I hope I'm wrong. However, feeling the way I do, I will go with Kopitar, and it's not close.

Draft Guru 01-23-2010 07:53 PM

If we knew then what we know now, Kopitar. Right now we lack a true #1 center, while our prospect depth at D is pretty solid.

nyr2k2 01-23-2010 08:53 PM

Kopitar and it's not close for me.

hpNYR 01-23-2010 09:04 PM

Kopitar by a goood margin.

Yup, I'd have to agree. Anze has shown that he IS a star in this league, Staal has only shown that one day he MIGHT be.

Inferno 01-23-2010 10:26 PM

I chose staal.

because its a weird question and has so many unforeseen consequences...

If the question was, would you trade Staal for Kopitar...well then, thats a little different.

What are the "unforeseen consequences" that made you make that decision? I looked at it as almost being the same as "would you trade staal for kopitar".

tjs252 01-23-2010 10:31 PM

Knowing what we know now at the time of the draft, you take Kopitar.

If you just give the Rangers the 12th pick again, with no knowledge of how the future of the team would shake out, and have Kopitar and Staal both there, I think we still take Staal.

Because the question was about the past rather than the present...kinda like the butterfly effect. If they take Kopitar with pick 1, how does that effect the rest of their picks? Do they still take Tom Pyatt in the 4th round? or do they try to get another defenseman? Does Tom Pyatt not being taken effect the Rangers ability to trade Scott Gomez away? Does that affect the ability to sign Gaborik?

I dunno, maybe im overthinking it...i tend to do so with time anomalies...its the Star Trek nerd in me :naughty:

But as you can see, the choice is easy anyway: Kopitar by a mile.
