Matt Martin's first NHL Fight (vs. T. Kennedy)

Not a bad scrap. Matty Martin, Bridgeport's AHL energizer, has looked good through 4 periods of his call up. He held his own tonight vs. Kennedy, and I believe the decision goes to MattyMar.

First of many... I would have liked to see him go with Rupp...

petrocelli 02-10-2010 09:14 PM

I like this kid and think he could be a tough player for us for a long time. I just hope one of these heavyweights doesn't knock all his teeth out or send him into the front row. Matt Martin is still developing. He doesn't have man strength yet, and at 190 pounds, isn't close to being a heavyweight.

Rupp is a Grade A scummer, but a BIG grade A scummer. Marty will dance with him in a year or two, I reckon.

The Expert 02-10-2010 09:49 PM

If he's gonna be a tough player he should shed the visor.

He doesn't have to go with a Rupp yet, but fighting the smallest guy on the team was kind of lame. I mean he's got 11 fights between the AHL and NHL this year, plus 5 in pre-season.

I love Matty Martin, he is gonna be a good player in this league. Exactly the type of guy a team wants, someone who hits and fights like crazy but is talented enough to fit onto the top 3 lines as a regular.

In The Flesh 02-10-2010 10:20 PM

kinda reminds me of Ryan Hollweg when he first came up, minus the visor

Two things about that:

One: Rupp went to dance with Sutton. Rupp was cut off by Martin, but declined to dance.

and 2: Kennedy dropped gloves first. What's Martin supposed to do?

I didn't see Rupp decline Martin, I saw Rupp challenge Sutton, who skated away.
I'm going to have watch the Martin/Kennedy thing again, because it looked like Martin pushed the issue. But I've only seen it once.

what the hell is a scummer? If scummer means fighter then there is nothing grade a about Rupp's fighting ability - actually for his size - he sucks at fighting

Oroku Saki* 02-11-2010 12:39 AM

Rupp was not the greatest enforcer. He'd only enforce when he wanted to. Not the best fighter for his size.

A Scummer is a scum bag. That's mike Rupp. Dirty stickwork, runs goalies, generally trash.

And again, Martin went to engage Rupp. Rupp wanted Sutton, so he skated away. Kennedy dropped gloves on Martin, not the other way around.

macleod50 02-11-2010 09:13 AM

Rupp wanted to go with Sutton and Martin stepped in, Rupp skated away. Martin went at him again later in the game and Rupp declined him.

Kennedy grabbed Martin after MM hit him. The homer glasses are on if you think Martin "picked" Kennedy to fight.

this...and its not like kennedy doesnt fight...Also, does he not wear a visor as well? Martin is a 20 yr old in his 2nd game, by no means a "heavyweight"...get off his back

he's actually at 205lbs right now and thinks he'll be about 215-220 by this upcoming preseason.

seabs926 02-11-2010 11:36 AM

Martin did a lot of swinging, but Kennedy definitely got the best punch in. It was right at the start so you couldn't see it from the first view. Overall a decent scrap by both guys.

Pretty much all said there.

He fights about as much as Crosby, as in once a year. Martin had 2 less fights in pre-season this year than Kennedy has had in his entire career.

Nice to see Kennedy eat a few.

Pierre McGuire must be heartbroken at this footage.
can't remember which Cap it was but last Sunday Pierre was playing up Kennedy as some fearsome pugilist, etc., which was good for a chuckle.

"he doesn't want to fight Tyler Kennedy!"

Backstrom.

Pierre's quote was "Tyler Kennedy is a little ball of hate."

I like Backstrom and all, but look at him. He's pretty delicate. TK already looks like he was hooked up to a dirt bike and dragged through the ugly forrest face first. He's got nothing to lose.

Cairbre 02-13-2010 03:41 PM

Nothing gains respect for an up and coming tough guy like fighting Tyler Kennedy.
