Local hockey leagues and pickup games?

Does anyone here, who lives in or around Raleigh, play in the local amateur leagues or know where to find pickup games? I'm trying to break in as a newbie player, and I'm close enough to the Cary Icehouse, but I just wanted to see if there were any other options around town.

In particular it would be cool to find some kind of regular pickup league, whether it be on ice, pavement, or whatever other surface.

I have played at Cary Icehouse, the IcePlex off Capitol Boulevard, and the Rec-Zone.

The IcePlex and the Rec-Zone have better ice by far. At that point it just depends on what size surface you prefer. IcePlex has an Olympic sized rink which really opens up the game and gives you more time and space, while the Rec-Zone has an NHL size surface.

There are a few other ice rinks around, but those are the only ones I have any experience playing on.

I did in line hockey at marsh creek park. Used to go out with a bunch of guys but they quit going.

Ice-plex has a C-league pickup on Thursday nights. There are a few ringers out there who could maybe play B, but there are plenty of newbies too. They usually provide 45 minutes of drills or "practice" prior to the pick-up as well. I was a regular there until I herniated a disk :( The big ice at Ice-plex is nice when you're trying to learn skills becuase you can actually do something with the puck for a few seconds before somebody is on top of you.

I've played in leagues at the Cary Icehouse, Garner Icehouse, RecZone, and Hillsborough. Really just depends where you are closest to. I know Cary and Reczone have pickup once or twice a week, but it is a mix of player skill level (some very good). There are leagues, pickup, etc..at the Ice Plex and Factory Ice House in Wake Forest. They also have leagues of all levels so that anyone can find a level of competition they are comfortable with. There is also stick and puck usually a couple of times a week.

If you are interested in Roller hockey instead, the best place is Dreamsports Center in Apex. They have adult leagues that are broken up into about 6 divisions, so one for every skill level. They also have pick-up hockey most Sunday mornings.

The best bet is to check the schedules on their websites to see what works for any of these places. Call and talk to the league director at these places and explain what you are looking for, they can usually help you out as well.

Thanks, everyone. This thread has been quite helpful as I didn't even know some of these places existed.
