Willie Mitchell's season might be over

Anybody else listening to this interview on team1040 with AV?.

He said 5 days ago willie mitchell was symptom free, but then he got a text saying all his symptom's are back and is very concerned (said that over and over), and said it might even be so serious his season might be in jeopardy.

Pratt asked him again, and he said he does not want to say 100% that his season is over, but he said again he is very concerned.

terrible news

Just read on TSN about Bieksa and then they mentioned Mitchell still hadn't skated since his injury and I was wondering about his condition. Tough to hear.

ouch that would be a huge blow i never really think anything of willie mitchell injuries that tought s.o.b always seems to come back no matter what

This would be a massive blow, our best d-man right now is ehrhoff only.

We have no shut down guy anymore, The trade dead line becomes even more important.

CallMeJerry 02-25-2010 04:49 PM

Can someone remind me how many games Malkin got suspended for?

ItsAllPartOfThePlan 02-25-2010 04:51 PM

This is a ****ing huge blow. These types of dmen are rarely available on the trade market and teams usually overpay for them during FA.

Mr. Canucklehead 02-25-2010 04:51 PM

Oh NO......that is such terrible news. :( Hopefully it's incorrect, but man, I hope Mitchell recovers at some point so he can feel healthy, much less play hockey...

Since the NHL waits on injury status now, it should be a lot. I'm sure they are still investigating. :help:

Lard_Lad 02-25-2010 04:57 PM

If he's gone for the year, it poses a big dilemma in the offseason, too...if Willie wants to come back but his health is still a question mark, does he get a big new contract when there's a UFA option like Dan Hamhuis available?

Hamhuis will probably go for the money Mitchell is making now, but he is nowhere near effective.

Agent007 02-25-2010 05:00 PM

At first I was hoping he'd be back after the Olympics. At this point I'll be happy if he's back before the end of the regular season...

xtr3m 02-25-2010 05:02 PM

Felt symptom-free, tried to workout, symptoms came back.

There are a couple of other UFA options available as well.

Paul Martin would be the perfect replacement for Mitchell with Hamhuis, Volchenkov, Seidenberg, and Michalek being decent replacements as well.

Mitchell was having a great season but with his age and injury concerns I think we may have to walk away unless Mitchell is willing to take a significant pay cut.

Agent007 02-25-2010 05:06 PM

By the way if Mitchell is out for the rest of the season then it does free up some cap space to work with at the deadline. Basically Bieksa gets off LTIR (3.75M) and Mitchell goes on LTIR (3.5M)

Peter Griffin 02-25-2010 05:06 PM

Horrible news if accurate that he'll be out for the season. My guess is that Gillis will actively pursue a d-man before the deadline and given that Hamhuis could be moved he'd be a good addition. Nashville apparently is seeking young forwards, Hansen/Grabner?

Pavel Kubina is another player that could be of interest. He won't come cheap though.

PRNuck 02-25-2010 05:07 PM

Worst. Text. Ever.

Hey thanks again for that pass Welly.

adamzilla 02-25-2010 05:07 PM

**** Malkin.

I hope he has something coming to him.

pitseleh 02-25-2010 05:09 PM

Wow, losing Mitchell would be devastating. I can't imagine the Canucks will go through the deadline without adding another quality player on defence.

MS 02-25-2010 05:09 PM

Absolutely terrible news.

Aside from the Sedins, Kesler, and Luongo, he's our most important player. Hopefully he's back before the playoffs.

Would likely mean we need to pick up a top-4 defender before the deadline, but it's not exactly like there's a lot out there.

I know what he doesn't have coming to him...an Olympic medal :sarcasm:

Saren 02-25-2010 05:12 PM

I highly, highly doubt Martin leaves Jersey. The man is revered there, and with very good cause. He is a bonafide #1 defenceman, extraordinary in his own zone and possesses an excellent breakout pass.

Not moving at the deadline, and if he makes it to FA I doubt he'd want to play here for what we'd offer.

FruityPants3* 02-25-2010 05:16 PM

I have to admit, the OP kind of confused me. It sounds like Willie received a text message "hey, it's your symptoms, I'm back."

Eddie Vedder 02-25-2010 05:17 PM

que tomas kaberle speculation (with no substance behind it, ofcourse)

Anyone got a list of pending UFA defenceman?

JuniorNelson 02-25-2010 05:31 PM

ufa defencemen

theres a thread on the trades page

Why would he be suspended?
