Hawaii under Tsunami warning.

Just called my parents who are at their ocean front condo. They report warning alarms went off at 6am. Wave expected to hit 11:19am local time (Kauai).

It could also hit areas of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska.

If you are anywhere near the ocean, please check your status WRT tsunami warnings, watches.

6' tsunami hits Tahiti. But now hearing that Japan could be hit hard.

Shape 02-27-2010 12:09 PM

This is nuts. A tsunami is rolling across the ocean as we speak... errrr type.

Thank god Chile has... well, actual buildings.

TheGooooch 02-27-2010 12:31 PM

Yeah, you can only hope for the best for them. That is insane.

I have a strong feeling that the surfers will be out in full force today

you have family in Hawaii? I do too, quite a bit actually. I'm hoping they'll be alright. If your curious, if you know anyone in your family that's in the dairy/cow business (or was in it) chances are were related to some degree.

Lady Stanley our own MVP

Best wishes to your family LS.

This is terrible.

I hope the best for your family LS

Tsunami expected to hit Hawaii approximately 1:05 PT.

I am not a Tsunami expert, but they have kept pushing out the time of impact. This tells me intuitively that it is a big one as moving more water would seem to take more time. Just a guess though.

8.8?? What's going on in this world....

MrCowGod15 02-27-2010 04:01 PM

Sweet Jesus! 8.8?! I hope everything's alright, LS. Keep us posted.

in 1960 there was a 9.5 Quake in Chile. This isn't really something new there, which luckily means they also have pretty strict seismic codes so hopefully the damage isn't too terrible.

Still pretty crazy though, I hope everything ends up ok!

Apparently the worst in recorded history:

Hopefully we'll never get to see a 13.0 earthquake. :help:

Lagging tsunami is lagging.

LadyStanley 02-27-2010 04:26 PM

Sorry, had a meeting and just got back.

Parents vacation on Kauai, beach front ground floor condo. They evacuated about 9am local time (11am PT). They were planning to head to area where they could view what was happening until all clear (perhaps 1-3 hours after initial wave due). (My parents are old school and do not leave their cell phones on, so I'll wait for a call from them.)

Listening to reports, sounds like it's been 1-3 feet on the Big Island (Hawaii). Oahu (Waikiki) pictures on TV don't look like a lot of devastation - small waves.

(Then a 6.0 quake hits Argentina, apparently considered an aftershock of the 8.8 quake in Chile.)

The 13.0 is the estimated seismic reading from the impact of the dinosaur killing meteor impact.

That's exactly why I said I hope we'll never get to see it.

SonomaShark 02-27-2010 04:40 PM

I used to live on Oahu. Nobody really paid much attention to the tsunami warnings, except the tourists. When we'd get the warnings, I'd always wonder what it would be like if a really big, super colossal, hollywood-movie of a tsunami would appear off in the distance. How fast can you get to the top of Diamondhead? :)

LadyStanley 02-27-2010 05:23 PM

Just heard from parents. They're waiting for the all clear. Haven't seen anything.

LadyStanley 02-27-2010 05:56 PM

All clear given.

(Twitter reports of some looting. :shakehead)

Not suprising. Budget cuts probably has police forces spread pretty thin as it is. Thankfully everyone you know is okay LS :)

Redknuckles 02-27-2010 08:06 PM

I can see it now we need your billion dollers to help the chilian relief fund.

just saying

Cool graphic of how they expected the wave/water energy of the tsunami to propagate.
