If Bettman Does Not Continue NHL Participation In The Olympics...

Then he is a ****ing idiot. How was this not good for the sport of hockey? You can't ask for a better game than what we just witnessed, and the whole world was watching it. I'll be furious if the NHL doesn't break for the Olympics in 2014.

It's not up to Bettman. It will be a negotiated point in the next CBA just like the 2006 and 2010 participation was a negotiated point in the last one.

But to be honest, while the Olympic hockey is fun, I don't really see that the NHL gains anything by taking part.

DownFromNJ 02-28-2010 05:00 PM

Even though we lost, I can't help but think the NHL just gained about a million new fans today. What a game.

Hey that was a fun game! I've got to watch more hockey. National Hockey League you say? Hmm...

See, I don't think any additional viewers that tuned into today are any different than the people who turn into the Olympics and watch speed skating or snowboarding then don't pay it anymore attention until the next Olympics.

Thepainter 02-28-2010 05:06 PM

Bettman is gonna let Crosby sleep in the bed tonight.

Tricolore#20 02-28-2010 05:07 PM

But the NHL will be dark for 2 weeks.... waaah waaah waaah

Jack Tripper 02-28-2010 05:07 PM

it would surpass the espn and lockout decisions in stupidity

Ace Ballsy 02-28-2010 05:11 PM

Bettman would be beyond stupid if he were to stop NHLers from going to the Olympics in 2014.

Anthony* 02-28-2010 05:12 PM

it isnt bettmans decision retards

FrankG 02-28-2010 05:14 PM

He couldn't stop the players, they have already stated that they would go and play regardless of what the league says. What are you going to do when your top players all bail out to go play? He has no choice.

exactly.

Stopping the season for two weeks in the heart of a PO race? No. Stanley Cup is more important. Should go back to amatures 100%.

Actually, I'm not sure if the IIHF would let them play without permission of the NHL.

This Made Hockey More Popular

In The Flesh 02-28-2010 05:19 PM

These games aren't as "epic" as made out to be.

2003 Stanley Cup finals, not those were epic games.

I agree. I prefer the NHL to the Olympics anyway, so let the NHL guys play in their league and leave the Olympics to the amateur athletes that are supposed to play it.

Rust Cohle 02-28-2010 05:21 PM

This also added alot of star quality to alot of players. Marketing couldn't buy this.

The players have signed NHL contracts and are obligated to play for their teams.

If the NHL does not grant them permission to play, the IIHF will not allow them in the tournament.

Even if they tell the league to pound salt, the IIHF can stop them at the door.

I think it's going to be tough to get an audience from 2am to 10am eastern time. Sochi will have far less impact than Vancouver.

GKJ 02-28-2010 05:29 PM

I really think the 'shutdown for 2 weeks' is so overrated. I actually feel some relief from it. They still play 82 games.

Anyways, it's what the NHL does with this that will make it count. They didn't make it count in 2002, and had no chance to in 1998 and 2006.

All three times they just said "ok, here we are." That's not how it works in this country.

sh724 02-28-2010 05:31 PM

You guys that think the olympics are so good for NA hockey do realize not every olympics is like this? Look at Torino the vast majority of ppl in NA didnt care because both US and Can sucked it up. Most people in NA arent going to care about the olympics if the games are in the middle of the night and US and Can arent playing. 2006 got horrible ratings and did not benefit the NHL at all.

Also i love how people always hate on Bettman for things he has no control over its the OWNERS not Bettman that will decide if the NHL goes to the Olympics. Most decision about the NHL are not made by Bettman but by the BOG Bettamn jsut enforces those decisions.

TransatlanticIce 02-28-2010 05:32 PM

Torino was also such a failure because of the fact that everyone was still reeling from the effects of the lockout only one year earlier.

Brodie 02-28-2010 05:33 PM

If the NHL played during the Olympics while minor leaguers played in the Games, Olympic hockey would still win in the ratings. Bottom line.

So, what should they do to capitalize on it? I still say any non-fan interest is just like the interest shown in any other Olympic sport -- something that happens once every four years.

As an example, it's not unusual for me to watch Olympic basketball, but I still don't really give the NBA the time of day.

JWells16 02-28-2010 05:37 PM

All I have to say is that I've seen more buzz around hockey over the past week than I see throughout the entire season.

Yea, let's put an end to that immediately.
