OTTAWA — Ryan Callahan was looking at the American flag, not at the scoreboard video screen, during the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner'' before last night's game.

Which is why the Team USA and Rangers winger had no idea that an individual in the Senators' game night operations decided to show video of every Canadian gold-medal winner, plus Sidney Crosby's golden goal against the Americans, as the U.S. national anthem was played.

The Canadian national anthem that followed was not accompanied by images from the Vancouver Games.

"I didn't have any idea,'' said Callahan, who scored twice in the Blueshirts' 4-1 victory over the Senators, including one off a brilliant dash down the left side at 0:22 of the second . "I don't look at the scoreboard during the anthem. I look at the flag."

It was pretty clearly a mistake. It was meant to go over the Canadian anthem (they always have a montage of great Canadian sports moments over the Canadian anthem).

I was there. The bigger story was the 13 year old who sang the anthems. She was incredible.

There was also a standing ovation for the American olympians on the Rangers.....Ottawa didnt have any American Olympians...and our fans cheered on the opposing teams players from the opposing country....but hey, positive news in the USA? Never.

Even if it was just an innocent mistake, someone should be disciplined over it.

If anything, just for the PR aspect. It simply just doesn't look good.

For domestic leagues, I don't think they should be played. It really is a North American thing to play anthems before the game. I've been to a few European soccer games, and at the club level, anthems have nothing to do with the game. Only matches involving national teams have the anthems before the game, and that's the way it should be.

Even for non-Olympics IIHF games, both anthems should be played before the game instead of just the winner's anthem at the end of each game. That's one thing FIFA does well.

I love poutine (sometimes hard to find in the States but managed to get my hands on some this week) but I had no idea what beaver tails were so I just looked it up.
