LeBrun: Plekanec staying in Montreal

Quote:

The Habs and Tomas Plekanec's agent, Rick Curran, continue to talk, and all signs point to the Czech center likely staying put instead of hitting the unrestricted free-agent market July 1.

"We continue to have positive conversations ... not likely to finalize any agreement until after the season has completed," Curran told ESPN.com via e-mail Saturday.

I suspect the Habs need to create some cap space after the season before fitting in any new deal for Plekanec, but it does sound like the Canadiens will likely retain him.

The agent talks about finalizing an agreement after the season.

How much?$4.5 million?Somewhere in that ballpark.

Coldplay 03-14-2010 09:17 AM

Yeeeeeeeahhhh

$4.5 to $5 million would be great! :D

Hermit Wizard Eater 03-14-2010 09:18 AM

I wouldn't be too excited.

That means that the habs will have two bad contracts for their centers.

Plekanec is going to get 5-6 mill cap hit.

Ola 03-14-2010 09:30 AM

Not commenting on what Plec is "worth" et c, I do wonder what he would get on the open market?

There are very few players available this summer and he is a good player having a good year.

And GM's have a record of being stupid in the past.

Em Ancien 03-14-2010 09:45 AM

He'll stay at somewhere between 4M$-5M$.

Even though he has 4 straight 20-goal seasons and is having a career year, his stats since his rookie year are pretty much a 60-point player.

If he wants to stay here, he knows he can't ask for full market value based on this season.

Would be pretty awesome of him to take a reasonable contract because he likes it here. :D

RJ8812 03-14-2010 09:47 AM

until he signs, there's no guarentee he's staying, no matter what the reports are now

Tony D63 03-14-2010 10:00 AM

aw man I was wishing sather would sign him =/

surferdude99* 03-14-2010 10:04 AM

We simply could not afford to have him for more than 4.5 M with all our other high payed forwards and our RFA's (Price, Halak)

Unless we could get rid of Spacek's contract

Next Best Thing* 03-14-2010 10:41 AM

Maybe we can trade Roman Hamrlik in the offseason, unless we go really deep in the playoffs and he's some sort of defensive juggernaut, otherwise we HAVE to unload that contract. I'm pretty sure there will be at least one team interested in his services during the off-season or possibly after realizing they can't sign any defensemen via free agency. A combination of Subban(.875m)/M-A B(.750m) will more than make up for him. That would free up 5mil in cap space.

Glen Metropolit won't be re-signed considering his age and the fact that he pretty much lost his job to Dominic Moore who is younger, grittier and as good if not better offensively. Also Moore only makes .100mil more. So that will free up an additional 1 mil in cap.

Gtfo Mara, 1.670mil.

So we have almost 8mil to play around with to give Pleks a 2mil raise(4.750m) Halak to get on Price's (who won't get much) RFA contract so + 1.5mil(2.275m) and the rest that remains, 4.5mil of cap hit, distributed amongst Pouliot, Moore, Sergei, and Pyatt who are making a combined total of 4.17mil. They won't command substantial raises.

In other words, we're good if we get rid of Hammer lick.

Patty Roy 03-14-2010 10:46 AM

I'm thinking that the deal would be around 5 million per season. Marc Savard and Mike Ribeiro are both making 5 million and i think Plekanec is a decent comparible to those guys.

The Habs will definitely have to move some contract this season...one of Hamrlik or Spacek i would think are sure to go. Hamrlik will be in the final year of his contract and might be the easier one to move...buy out would also be an option if nothing else works.

Although I agree that we'd have to move Mara and Hamrlik, it can't be stressed at how invaluable Hamrlik is to this team. He is a rock, a great veteran presence on the blueline and adds a very underrated dimension to this team, that of stability. To simply disparage his contributions and understate his role with the tells me he's doing his job way too well!

Mara is a UFA though we don't have to lift a finger.

As for Hamrlik, he's been great for us this year there's no doubt, but for what he brings alone with a 5.5 hit (along with his age, 36 next year) to the cap is less than having Subban who's probably good for 20 pts maybe more in his rookie season while being steady defensively and M-A B who is the second coming of Mark Streit, big time PP specialist and versatile throughout the lineup even as a forward, both for 2 mil combined.

Well, everybody seems to be getting creative with the salary cap, who says Gauthier can't play around with this as well. Also, maybe Pleks will accept a longer term for less money...6 years, 27 million. Habs get Pleks at 4.5 million, Pleks gets 6 years more in a city he enjoys playing in.

I'm not enjoying your sense of understanding. Plekanec has made it clear he loves this city, and doesn't want to leave montreal.

I'm confused.....I don't know if you're correcting me or just repeating what I wrote about Plekanec enjoying his time in Montreal...

There are exceptions (eg., Markov) but it's often a case where Canadian teams (not just the Canadiens) have to pay not just market value to get/keep players but over the market value.

What are you talking about? Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa have some of the better contracts in the league lol.

Ziggy Stardust 03-14-2010 02:57 PM

Wasn't Kovalchuk expected to be staying with Atlanta? I wouldn't say anything is concrete until a contract is signed.

Those teams have their fair share of bad contracts as well...
