Ruutu to have Surgery

Just got the tweet. Ruutu to undergo shoulder surgery and will be out for the remainder of the season.

dmonk 03-24-2010 11:59 AM

and i was wondering why he looked like a shadow of himself...

good timing on surgery.

What the Faulk 03-24-2010 12:00 PM

I thought he played well the last few games.

Who's the man to replace him? Samson? Tlusty?

geehaad 03-24-2010 12:01 PM

So does *this* mean that they're going to mail it in, finally? :)

Blueline Bomber 03-24-2010 12:03 PM

Clearly with Edmonton winning a lot recently, we're going to sneak into that last spot again.

Ruutu's surprise surgery is just an excuse to get him out of the lineup.:sarcasm:

I would say Tlusty. But is there a certain amount of NHL games you can't play in order to play in the playoffs in the AHL. I thought that was a reason they sent him back to Albany b/c he was getting close to that cut off, or was that for something else.

Gr8Dan 03-24-2010 12:08 PM

Wasn't tlusty coming back from injury? We need a banger to replace ruutu so I think it might be Osala

No, we don't need toughness. Toughness can win games. We don't want to win games.

Oops, I forgot about him.

I'll bet its him too.

Gotta Catch Em Staal 03-24-2010 12:14 PM

Will there ever come a day when we have a policy to force injured players to sit out rather than playing well below their capacity and risking further injury?

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with right winger Anson Carter on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Carter a pro-rated $4M for the 2009-2010 season, $6.3M for the 2010-2011 season, and $10.5M for the 2011-2012 season. The deal also includes a no-trade clause and a guarantee to play with Eric Staal at all times.

Carter, 35, has scored 0 goals and 0 assists this season and is currently out of professional hockey.

“Anson is an elite goal scorer and a player we have sorely missed since letting him go,” said Rutherford. “Given the right opportunity, I fully believe he could outscore Miroslav Satan.”

Ugh.... I would bet anything that Tuomo has been playing with this injury since that Darcy Tucker fight that caused him to miss time.

And for those wondering, this is not the same shoulder he had operated on after the 03-04 season which is the good news.... I suppose. Two wonky shoulders as opposed to one terrible one.... I guess pick your poison.

As we know, most shoulder operations are roughly 14 month recovery time injuries. In that sense, it's good to get him under the knife and ready to go but it sucks he's hurt at all.

This will almost certainly have a lingering impact on his play next season.

As for who gets the call.... my vote goes for Samson. It would be as good of a time as any to see what he has. I don't think we have to replace Ruutu from a physicality standpoint to replace his production. Try Samson in a scoring line role and see what happens.

However, good money is on Oskar Osala getting those minutes. Tlusty is injured himself and trying to get healthy for Albany for the playoff push. Osala could come out of Albany and not hurt them as much as Samson's absence which could also be a consideration. With us having plucked away so much of their talent, it would be a shame to take more.

The procedure will correct a problem that Ruutu has dealt with for much of the seasonís second half, having originally left the lineup on January 8 against Colorado. Although he returned the ice one month later, coach Paul Maurice said that the player has not felt 100 percent.

Did someone say 14-month recupe? So he'll miss next year as well?

he won't miss next year, but he'll look and play like Frankie Kaberle did in 06-07/07-08.

Sasha Cares 03-24-2010 02:44 PM

If Ruutu can't throw his body around he becomes pretty damn useless to be honest... If he's not at full strength next year, that's a huge hit to the team

Guerzy 03-24-2010 02:44 PM

Too bad for Ruutu, likely excellent for our draft position.

Caniac4ever 03-24-2010 04:20 PM

Normally this news would tick me right off... Today I'm thinking this is our reward for the good month and a half of hockey. Now we can have our cake and eat it too(or in this case win a bunch of hockey games and still get a top draft pick).

Get better Ru!

2 big differences in my opinion.

1) Frankie Kaberle never had a physical edge to him and even after recovering, he played the same way.

2) Kaberle decided to wait until the right before the 06-07 season to have his surgery (September I believe). Ruutu is getting this taken care of before the end of this season so he has approximately 5 months of head start on recovery time.

I'm not suggesting that Ruutu will be 100% by the start of the season, but it is a different situation that Kaberle.

Gr8Dan 03-24-2010 05:07 PM

Drayson Bowman recalled

Guerzy 03-24-2010 06:37 PM

Great to see Drayson Bowman get some time. With that said, I am fully prepared to see Bowman on the 4th line getting 7 minutes a game with no PP time. Then, one of Samsonov or Kostopoulos (obvious choices as they are prolific goal scorers, a great addition to the top 6) will get the opportunity to play bigger roles. Here in Carolina, we love our vets.
