Bernier Recalled / Ersberg out with sore back

http://www.lakingsnetwork.com/hammond/?p=5054

Shortly, the Kings will announce that goalie Jonathan Bernier has been called up from Manchester of the AHL. Bernier is expected to be with the Kings in St. Paul today and, a bit later, I’ll have more information on exactly what Bernier’s role with the team is expected to be. Since he was with the Kings and beat Dallas 2-1 in a shootout on March 12, Bernier has appeared in six games with Manchester and allowed a total of 12 goals.

Great, what a vote of no confidence in either of our goaltenders.

Zizou 03-29-2010 09:54 AM

IMO, they should have started calling up players before the Dallas game. Nothing says "Get your ass in gear or you're out of here" like having a young kid called up in your place.

Besides, what kind of message do you think this sends the Kings? I recall a similar tactic used by Herb Brooks prior to the 1980 Olympics.

Quick must be getting a rest, and for whatever reason do not trust Ersberg against an offensively inept team.

Good. Quick single-handedly knocked me out of my fantasy league playoffs

Nerd alert!

It might just be a case of calling him up to scare Quick so that he performs as well as he can. I very much doubt they are calling him up to replace Ersberg after his last performance, and you can hardly see them calling him up to jump straight into number 1

Corrected :)

Anyhoo...on with your Kings talk

I understand if you don't want to use Quick in the back to back. But, uh, what the hell is wrong with Ersberg again? He just came in a couple games ago and kept the Kings in the game. No reason to be calling him up. Just causes more ****.

It's not about this season. Can't wait to start hearing that one :shakehead

If they think that Bernier gives them a better chance to win than Ersberg, then I'm all for it.

What would be the point of trying to "scare Quick?" He's the one that got us this far. (Ersberg should get a few more starts imo, but it looks like TM is sticking with Quick no matter what)

The only reason I can see is they may have some doubts about Ersberg, and really, with them limping into the playoffs, what's the point of trying to shake up Ersberg as well?

Isn't Ersberg signed for next year too? If his contract was up this season, this makes more sense.

BigBrown 03-29-2010 10:20 AM

Maybe they plan on starting Ersberg tonight and Bernier tomorrow

Butch 19 03-29-2010 10:22 AM

The appropriate question here is "can they call up someone who can score some ****ing goals?"

If not, calling up Bernier really doesn't matter.

Good. Lets be honest, the team has been playing like crap since the Olympics and it's not just Quicks fault but he has been playing horribly!

This is professional hockey not some little league. If you aren't preforming then you aren't playing!

Either that or they don't trust him nor Quick behind a defensively inept team at the moment.

Agreed. But I also agree with others that Quick isn't the problem, and that Ersberg deserves to start a damn game.

AKAY47 03-29-2010 10:33 AM

Bernier will play in one of the back-to-backs, and then get sent back to Manchester. The Monarchs play Wednesday, Bernier plays tonight vs. Minnesota and then flies back to Manchester for their Wednesday game, it would make the most sense. Manchester has won 4 straight and will make the playoffs

I think by this point it's clear that Ersberg isn't in the cards. I like him and think he is a decent NHL goalie but I don't think he is better then Bernier and that is all that matters now. Play the guy who gives you the best chance to win....

We are to close to the playoffs to care about fairness.

Exactly. It's clear to everyone that Ersberg is not in the long term plan for the Kings, so why is everyone so concerned if his feelings are hurt because Bernier's coming up? They are professional hockey players and grown men. I for one am excited to get to see the potential franchise goalie get another game in.

TonySCV 03-29-2010 11:16 AM

The "no confidence" Ersberg ship sailed a long time ago when Bernier was picked over Ersberg to start the Dallas game. You can debate THAT move until the cows come home, but the move was made, Ersberg is done and now that the last several games of the season are more meaningful, Bernier's getting the nod again.

Ersberg was done as a King when the Dallas decision was made. This is just a reminder.

DIEHARD the King fan 03-29-2010 11:22 AM

I have no problem with the call-up. If JB can gets us points that we are not getting right now, then have at it. BUT, I ask you, is this not an indictment of the "lets-play-him-til-he-drops" approach that TM has used with JQ all season long? Is this not a result of giving EE almost no time in net during meaningful game situations all season long? And if so, isnt this another display of "poor judgment" of our vaunted coach, who can't seem to figure out line combinations that last for more than a game or three? Isn't the coach responsible for anything?

Just asking?

I really do not like that excuse.. it is getting old.. If it is not about this season, which season will it be? Whether they have a chance to win or not, shouldn't they do their best to make the most out of it? It sounds like a management's excuse to let the fans know that they never make a mistake and everything's according to a plan. And even if the team doesn't do well, since it is not for present but for the future, it is all good.:shakehead

JBernierFan 03-29-2010 11:53 AM

I'm excited and shocked. I was just talking to my mom on Friday night and she suggested Bernier and I said they wouldn't bring him up because Manchester is fighting for the playoffs. How little do I know!?

As everyone has said, this just shows that the goalies next year will be Quick and Bernier and they will battle for the #1. Ersberg will be traded or in Manchester once training camp is over (unless there is an injury of course).

Ersberg exists for the Kings because he was insurance for when Bernier wasn't ready a few years ago and Quick was an ECHL goalie (oh yeah, and Labs sucked). That's the only reason. He was never here to be anything more.
