Overview
Extra InformationThe Detroit Red Wings have passed some teams and closed the gap on a few others, in part because their margin for error no longer is paper thin.

Earlier in the season, when they were riddled by injuries, it was difficult to overcome slow starts, mid-game lapses and late mistakes. Now, with their depth replenished, they’re finding ways to win when they’re not at their sharpest, such as their past two games.

“We can probably play better than we have the last couple of games,’’ defenseman Brad Stuart said. “We’ve gotten away with a few games that weren’t as good as the ones previously.’’

The Red Wings, winners of seven in a row, will try to leapfrog Nashville and move into fifth place in the Western Conference when they host the Predators on Saturday afternoon. Detroit trails Nashville by one point but has two games in hand, so it controls its own destiny regardless of the outcome.

“We’ve been working hard to move up in the standings, so it’s a huge game,’’ goaltender Jimmy Howard said. “Every game has seemed like a playoff game for us for a while. You got to keep going. We want to continue that momentum into the playoffs.’’

Howard will make his 25th consecutive start, and Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, though pleased with his team’s defensive effort during its 14-2-1 run, wants to see a better performance than he witnessed in Tuesday’s 5-4 win against Edmonton and Thursday’s 3-2 victory vs. Columbus.

“I think we’ve played pretty well defensively. The last two games haven’t been indicative of the whole run,’’ Babcock said. “The last two games, we’ve made more mistakes than we made the rest of the time totally. We got to sharpen up our game right now.’’

Nashville is 9-2-1 in its past 12. The Red Wings are 4-1 against the Predators, including a 1-0, 11-round shootout win Saturday in Nashville.

“We’ve been getting timely goals and timely saves,’’ Stuart said. “The key for us is to stay confident and not get overconfident and think that anything is going to come easy for us. Approach every game with the same determination.’’

If things fall into place for them, the Red Wings, who visit Philadelphia on Sunday, could clinch a playoff spot this weekend. It is all but certain they will qualify for the postseason for the 19th consecutive season.

They want to get there on a roll.

“To win at playoff time, you got to be patient and you got to be relentless,’’ Babcock said. “You can’t turn over pucks and you got to be physical on the forecheck. We still at times are turning things over.’’

Odds and ends
  • Forward Dan Cleary (pulled groin) will sit out for the fourth game in a row and the sixth time in the past eight games. He skated Friday with the team, said he felt really good and hopes to play Sunday.
  • Stuart didn’t practice Friday because of a minor injury but plans to play Saturday.

Kevin Klein.

That was great timing... I'm looking for a recipe, and shocker, I got distracted.

I'm only going to be able to watch the first- I have to work :(

TOPGUN 04-03-2010 08:18 AM

Have to go, have a game of my own!

Good luck E-bunny ( :p: ) There is an error!

No, no. That was the 'old' mistake, made a new one. Corrected the old one :)

Edit: Jeez you're fast!

ESunlin 04-03-2010 08:22 AM

Honestly, no one will believe me, but I JUST got on the computer. I was vacuuming!

Good luck at your game!

The Jamison 04-03-2010 08:23 AM

I got my beer nice and cold and im about to go get me some hot sauce for my wings, im ready...

ESunlin 04-03-2010 08:42 AM

Bouillon is from NYC.

I'm trying to get all my stuff done before 2 so I can watch as much of the game as possible before work.

My family gets home tomorrow while I'm at work, so I'm preparing a casserole for them to stick in the oven when they get home. I know, I'm so domestic. Heh.

Oooo, what kind? That actually sounds good... lol

ESunlin 04-03-2010 08:52 AM

I haven't gotten that far... I actually don't really cook, but I know they'll be tired.

I'm still looking at recipes... I may have found one- it's Quick and Easy (!) Chicken Casserole.

ProPAIN 04-03-2010 08:52 AM

We should take this opportunity to take the 5th spot. Nashville are really starting to annoy me. We have this nice streak going on, but they are just not letting take over.

I want to see the likes of Franzen, Lidstrom, Filppula and Bertuzzi burying those empty netters now. We had some for the past couple of games and it's a little embarrassing. This isn't going to be an easy game at all, especially with Rinne in net. A regulation win would be awesome.

Good luck Red Wings! I can finally watch a game at a normal time!

PocketGnome 04-03-2010 09:00 AM

Arnott is spelled wrong in the Nashville injuries.

Go Wings! time to take over the 5th seed!

ESunlin 04-03-2010 09:03 AM

Crap, I missed that one...

Quick and easy always catches my eye. One time when i was single i tried to do this beef and potato casserole but it ended up being burnt and dried out, lol.

Haven't tried anything that fancy in a long time.

The Jamison 04-03-2010 09:06 AM

Game predictions...

Wings win 2-1 in OT.

I agree that with Rinne in net, its going to be a long day, but Howard will keep us in it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

A 3 point game would really suck. I'm just sayin'.

The Jamison 04-03-2010 09:14 AM

It would but im trying to be realistic here.

Ok fine, Wings win 9-0, Datz and Mule get hat tricks and they pull Rinne before the end of the first...

Yeeeeeeah. I just missed the cooking part of HomeEc. I can make simple things (Hello, I didn't starve this week!!) so I can live, but I just don't cook. I even have leftovers in the fridge. And, ok, I'll admit, there was a lot of stuff in a box that I just stuck in the oven, steamed some veggies and went- BUT I did grill chicken a few times!!

I suck at being domestic. Well, I clean, but the cooking part?? Yeah, no.

The Jamison 04-03-2010 09:29 AM

I can do some cooking so with my limited skills, combined with my girlfriends limited skills, we can turn out some good meals from time to time.

Oh, i have a "George Foreman" like grill thing. Let me tell you, its worth its weight in gold. No joke...

I cook asian. If you ever come over to my place for dinner, I hope you like rice. Rice is like a mandatory side dish in asian cooking.

Then again, I also enjoy pasta, which is quite easy to make. Sauces can be bought in a jar and you just add your own twist to it and serve.

crashman 04-03-2010 10:10 AM

I'm going but it's gonna be kinda weird...I'm going to the game solo then going straight into work. I figured since I was gonna be near downtown (Ferndale) for work on a Saturday anyway, I may as well make it worth the trip and catch a Wings game!

If that doesn't make me a dedicated fan, then I don't want to be one. I've been to games by myself before but I feel like such a creep-o sitting there by myself...oh well...maybe I'll get ****faced, start cussing up a storm, make everyone seated around me hate me, throw an octopus on the ice and then show up to work 100% blacked out.

j/k...

Ohhhh, I so wanted to go for Japanese yesterday for lunch, but my sister said NOOOO.

Speaking of which, I could go for some sushi right now... Oh, to be a broke college student...

LOL, I'm running around getting ready for work, cleaning the house, and watching America's Next Top Model reruns.

The Jamison 04-03-2010 10:13 AM

There is nothing wrong with that. Every time i go to a game i at least see 3-5 people flying solo. I would too if i had the chance.
