Extra InformationCome Monday morning, when the NHL allows playoff teams to expand their rosters beyond the confines of the salary cap, the Red Wings' roster will be fortified with some fresh legs and maybe even a new line configuration.

Eventually, this season's Black Aces -- typically a practice squad -- will include nine players from Grand Rapids. Two of them, though, may find themselves on the fourth line once the playoffs start.

"These guys know that Abby (Justin Abdelkader) is coming back and Brad May is coming back, too," coach Mike Babcock said after practice Thursday. "Those guys will be parachuted into our lineup right away. Now, whether they get into the lineup on Day One or just practice, I can't answer that. But we're going to watch and the players will decide."

The Wings' fourth line has been operating without a center for the past month. Drew Miller, a forward, has done a solid job in a kind of hybrid center-forward role, but the line has gone stagnant.

Kris Draper, who mans one wing, hasn't scored in 21 games and has just four assists in that span. Jason Williams, the other wing, hasn't scored in 15 games.

There's an opening there for Abdelkader, who centered the fourth line for the Wings for 50 games before returning to Grand Rapids. He had 11 goals and 10 assists with a plus-4 rating for Grand Rapids. He had three goals and three assists with a minus-11 rating with the Wings.

He and May, who played in 40 games with the Wings, will get a chance to win spots on the fourth line at some point in the playoffs.

"That's up to those guys to decide, isn't it?" Babcock said. "That's the great thing about it. I don't make these decisions. They make them. I just watch them."

Other call-ups
General manager Ken Holland said that besides May and Abdelkader, he would call up forwards Mattias Ritola and Jan Mursak (though Mursak will be delayed because he's playing in another tournament), defensemen Jakub Kindl and Doug Janik and goalie Daniel Larsson .

Those players will travel. Holland said goalie Thomas McCollum and defenseman Logan Pyatt will join the team for the home games.

"You can carry whatever amount of players you want, but at the end of the day, you carry guys that could help you, should you need them," Holland said. "And sometimes you bring up guys just to give them a little taste of the playoff experience."

No farewell yet
Nick Lidstrom was asked if he had allowed himself to think this might be his last playoff run with the Red Wings.

"No I haven't," he said. "I am just getting ready to another playoff that starts next week. I haven't looked any further than that."

Lidstrom, 39, is in the last year of his contract. Although Holland and Babcock have made it clear they want and expect him to return next season, Lidstrom said he wouldn't make any decision until after the season.

Tape to tape
Babcock said Jimmy Howard would start in goal tonight. He said he wouldn't announce his goalie for the season finale in Chicago Sunday until after the game tonight.

Are you being sarcastic? :)

Derrick Brassard :D

Good timing, I'm heading out the door to my awards ceremony, and except for my uncooperative hair, if I may so myself, I look pretty darned good.

cbjgirl 04-09-2010 11:36 AM

In the Dispatch today, the writers had Dorsett and Blunden flip-flopped in the line-up.

Nash is supposed to play, but they said that on Wednesday too.

petesrw 04-09-2010 12:31 PM

Will be at this game! (thx Dad)

I hope this isn't the last time that I get to see Lidstrom in person. Crazy to think he won't be around forever :(

PocketGnome 04-09-2010 01:08 PM

Boo for friday night games.. that's when my games are.

Oh well, I think the wings will win 4 to 1. I got the last game correct, so hopefully I'm correct again! haha

Brodie 04-09-2010 01:32 PM

100 points, baby.

ProPAIN 04-09-2010 02:22 PM

I want a comfortable win. Remember those? A game where we dominate the game ON THE SCOREBOARD. If we play our game, puck possession, outshoot the opponent, etc but don't get goals, that's a little worrying.

Let's also hope Mason doesn't make those annoyingly awesome saves. Can't watch the game tonight unfortunately...enjoy guys!

Good luck Red Wings!

Is there a real stream out there on justintv anyone knows about? I hate searching til almost the 1st period is over like last time.

theYman 04-09-2010 05:18 PM

also why isn't Draper centering the 4th line and Miller is? Isn't Miller a winger anyways?

Heaton 04-09-2010 05:19 PM

Draper isn't an NHL center anymore.

ESunlin 04-09-2010 05:30 PM

Ok, coooome on. I'm ready for hooockey!

In my awards ceremony, they introduced me as "the student who figured she HAD to take a foreign language and chose Russian because of her love for hockey." I got several hoots and hollers.

ASPEN 04-09-2010 06:00 PM

Go wings!

mottjm7 04-09-2010 06:01 PM

Game time!!! thinking 3-2 Wings

Nash will keep them in it

zecke26 04-09-2010 06:07 PM

it's one of these days where my hockey heart wants me to watch rags-flyers.

as long as i can't find a wings stream, it's at least an easy decision. if anyone finds a stream, post it please. :)

SoupGuru 04-09-2010 06:08 PM

I predict a CBJ blowout.

That way, when they actually blow out the Wings, I can say I told you so. And if the Wings win, I can always say I was just jinxing them. Win-win.

SoupGuru 04-09-2010 06:09 PM

Gotta see that pass, Flipper! He was open!
