2010-2011 Lineup Predictions and Speculation

Okay folks, I love lineup speculation, and I want to hear your opinions.

Who do you think we will (re)sign and let go? How do you think the lines will look?

Only one rule: You must justify your signings to fit the cap. Please, I don't want to see "hurr lets just sign kovalchuk and we'll be aokay." Players should be paid realistically. Brashear still counts against the cap. Redden can be buried. MDZ has bonuses but they can carry over to 2011-2012. MZA will also have bonuses.

Without further ado, here are my 2010-2011 New York Rangers:

Left Wing Center Right Wing
Vaclav Prospal Erik Christensen Marian Gaborik
Brandon Dubinsky Artem Anisimov Mats Zuccarello-Aasen
Sean Avery Chris Drury Ryan Callahan
Brandon Prust Brian Boyle Jody Shelley

Left Defense Right Defense
Marc Staal Anton Volchenkov
Michael Del Zotto Daniel Girardi
Michal Rozsival Bobby Sanguinetti

Goaltending
Henrik Lundqvist
Alex Auld

Signings: Anton Volchenkov, Mats Zuccarello-Aasen
Re-signings: Marc Staal, Daniel Girardi, Vaclav Prospal, Alex Auld, Erik Christensen, Brandon Prust, Jody Shelley
Let go: Olli Jokinen, Enver Lisin, Anders Eriksson, Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau
Demoted: Wade Redden, Matt Gilroy, Aaron Voros
Cap Liability: Donald Brashear

Player Bonus Cap Hit
Marian Gaborik - $7,500,000
Chris Drury - $7,050,000
Henrik Lundqvist - $6,875,000
Michal Rozsival - $5,000,000
Anton Volchenkov - $4,550,000
Marc Staal - $3,500,000
Vaclav Prospal - $2,500,000
Daniel Girardi - $2,500,000
Ryan Callahan - $2,300,000
Sean Avery - $1,937,500
Brandon Dubinsky - $1,850,000
Donald Brashear - $1,400,000
Michael Del Zotto ($212,500) $1,087,500
Alex Auld - $1,000,000
Mats Zuccarello-Aasen (?) $900,000
Bobby Sanguinetti - $855,000
Erik Christensen - $850,000
Artem Anisimov - $821,666
Brandon Prust - $750,000
Jody Shelley - $725,000
Brian Boyle - $525,000

Category Totals
Roster Size 20
Salary Cap $56,800,000
Payroll $54,476,666
Bonuses $212,500 + (?)
Cap Space $2,535,834 (?)

At this point I don't want to speculate about trades, but I imagine we make a move or two. We have around $2.5 million in cap space to fill a 13th forward and/or a 7th defenseman. Sanguinetti and Gilroy can be interchangeable, or both can be carried and one can be the 7th defenseman, leaving around $800k in cap space for a 13th forward.

Give it your best shot, Rangers fans.

I don't know how I feel about Artem and Aasen being penciled in on the second line. There's no reason, aside from pure optimism, we should expect them to put up 60 points this season.

Callahan, Avery, Drury, Christensen, Anisimov, Aasen are all third line guys this season. Not saying none of them can become top-6 guys in the future, but planning the off-season with any of them in the top six is bad management.

I think the team is in an interesting situation here. Anisimov and Aasen have 2nd line potential, but I don't think they'll be ready for that this year.

With the log jam on the third line, I'd ideally drop Avery, Drury, and Redden and get some top 6 talent. Then re-sign Christensen to something cheap and see what he can do on the second line as stop-gap before Anisimov is ready for the job.

Roster would look something like this:

Prospal - [UFA] - Gaborik
Dubinsky - Christensen - [UFA]
Callahan - Anisimov - Aasen
Prust - [UFA] - Shelley

Staal - Girardi
MDZ - Rozsival
Sang/McD - [UFA]

Obviously the situation isn't ideal, but I'm trying to make the best with what we have and what we can do.

Where do you propose we move Drury and Avery?

You can have 1 spare forward, like Enver Lisin, and youll have to run 6 D.

Next season, you can trade Michal Rozsival, and incorporate Ryan McDonagh. The salary difference is about 4 million and change. the 4 million and change can be used to pay Anisimov, Cally and Dubi, with plenty of space for extra players. 2 years from now, Drury is off the books, which gives us 7 mil to go and get another true elite player, possibly by trade.

i dont know how many times ive had to explain this, but yes, you can EASILY incorporate Kovalchuk into the lineup, and have money to pay the kids.

Trade 'em for a couple of $5 footlongs to whoever wants them. We're obviously not going to get anything of value back for either one of them.

You could probably find a taker for Avery...

But Drury? If you make a topic in the trade forum, I guarantee you everyone will tell you Drury has negative value and will want a positive asset (like a good prospect or high draft pick) in exchange for taking on his obscene cap hit. In addition, Drury has a NMC.

Hanke 04-17-2010 06:46 PM

this is what I think...

Vaclav Prospal - Erik Christensen - Marian Gaborik
Ryan Callahan - Brandon Dubinsky - Mats Zuccarello-Aasen
Sean Avery - Chris Drury - Artem Anisimov
Brandon Prust - Brian Boyle - Jody Shelley

Left Defense Right Defense
Marc Staal - Anton Volchenkov
Michael Del Zotto - Daniel Girardi
Michal Rozsival - Bobby Sanguinetti

Kovalchuk - Christensen - Gaborik
Dubinsky - AA - Zuccarello
Avery - Drury - Callahan
Prust - Boyle - Shelly

Staal - Rosy
DZ - Volchenkov
Girardi - McD/Sangs

How exactly would you fit Kovalchuk under the cap with that lineup?

Sounds like a plan. I'm hungry.

Rust Heisenberg 04-17-2010 07:00 PM

What i think. Rosival (draft picks) + Drury (4th line player to be demoted as well) traded. Redden demoted. Jokinen, Shelly, Prospal, Christensen, Parentau not resigned. Brashear traded or taken on waivers by a team willing to take a chance on him.

Rangers will have like 24 mill left to re-sign and sign players.

They sign:

Sharp(4.5), Volchenkov(4.8). Trade for Filatov/Radulov. Sign Artyuchen (1.8).

Resign:

Staal, Girardi, Prust, Auld.

Lines:

Radulov/Filatov-Sharp-Gaborik

Or find a trigger man for the PP.

NO MORE FORWARD FA SIGNINGS!

Get a good 2nd line winger or 1st line center via trade.

I agree, but Frolov's and Seidenberg's cap hits are a few million off from what they will fetch.

Still have over 3mil space in my calculations. These small deviations aren't really important because it's all under the assumption that we dump Redden, trade Boyle/Lisin, and don't do anything stupid like resigning Jokinen or overpaying anyone else.

You seem to be missing Brashear's $1,400,000 cap hit, which significantly lessens the room for deviation.

Where's Dale Weise in all of these? Everybody's forgetting him.

And I can see like Andreas Lilja or Kim Johnson or someone of that caliber on D.

Unfortunately we have an enormous glut of 3rd and 4th line guys, and there's really no space for him.
