NJD news, sort of about Parise: The part about not talking yet about an extension isn't really news, IMO, since there is a year left on his contract and he's RFA after that, but of note that Parise and his agent (Sheehy) split. link

strungout 05-18-2010 12:23 PM

Neil Sheehy is an agent? I thought he sold cars. :)

I just read the Salary, Contract and Cap hit thread. Awesome work sk84fun_dc. It answered all the questions that I had.

Yea, that reminds me that after being sold to us as making everyone around him so much better, that no coach seems to be able to find wingers that can work with him, even on team canada.

Credit goes to Langway, too.

Hopefully people remember it's there as a reference when they have questions.

That was a particulary tasty bit of insight from JP that made me open my eyes to it. To the experts...Croz=Ultimate TEAM player...Ovechkin=Selfish russian.

Ovy made Clark into a 30 goal scorer. Crosby can't make Kunitz a 30 goal scorer. Time for experts to re-evaluate their stance.

Also the part about road games in Montreal and how everyone scores at least once!

I personally won't. Far too lazy to look up posts like that.

When in doubt I'll just ask you instead. Much easier for me.:)

Ha Ha; not new to the agent business and fwiw, he's an attorney. Last I knew, he was Ryan Suter's agent, which is no surprise given his connection to the Suter family from his playing days.

The perception will likely be that way (At least from mainstream media and Pittsburgh) for a while until Ovie wins the cup. Crosby has been very ordinary in Int play but scores a routine goal in the gold metal game and its ZOMG he's the best ever.

sk84fun_dc 05-18-2010 01:36 PM

Along with Suter and Parise (well until recently), Sheehy was Finger's agent when he signed the deal with Toronto. Some other clients, at least in the past, if not now, Okposo, Stafford, J. Blake, Hillen, and Visnovsky.

This is so true. Ovy will have to win a cup and suddenly he will become this awesome team player. Just how it is.

I remember back when Elway and Yzerman were considered selfish chokers and after a couple championships they became great leaders.

Funny how that works isn't it?

The older I get the less I respect any form of media outlet. Nowadays when I am in the market for a product I don't read publications for reviews. I instantly look for forums and people who have used said product and see what they have to say.

Unfortunately soon even that form of info will be corrupted in some way. Oh well...at least there is beer...mmmmm...beer...

QuadrupleDeke 05-18-2010 01:56 PM

Varlamov looks very strong, with 18 saves through one period against Finland (and a few posts thrown in, as well).

Russia is up 1-0 on a pretty power play tally by Fedorov (from Semin and Ovechkin). They will start the 2nd on an abbreviated 5-on-3.

sk84fun_dc 05-18-2010 02:50 PM

So much to work with for you jokesters in this update from Florida...Ballard with a new weapon (crutches) and Worrell coaching

QuadrupleDeke 05-18-2010 03:29 PM

Varlamov with the 36-save shutout in a 5-0 win over Finland.

Russia remains undefeated going into the bracket round, and is the only team that has yet to lose (they haven't even gone to overtime).

They place Canada (2-3 in qualification play) on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

The Wizards just won the draft lottery if anyone cares (I do; I love basically every major sport in this country.) John Wall is likely to be the pick, and he is a tremendous young point guard.

I can't believe they didn't try to dump Arenas and they probably could have if they pursued it with the NBA's blessing. So next year we will basically have Gilbert Arenas, who is half the player he was 3 years ago, and most likely John Wall.

Looks like Gilbert will become a SG, you can't have a #1 overall pick being a bench player (has that even happened)

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 05-18-2010 08:04 PM

It's almost impossible to void a player's contract in the NBA. The warriors couldn't void Latrell Sprewell's, and he strangled his coach. The Wizards' only hope of getting rid of Arenas is via trade.

artilector 05-18-2010 08:07 PM

Good for DC... Leonsis brought lottery luck, I guess!

Varlamov did play well. The Russian commentators were saying "Look at how calm he looks this year, how few extra movements". Pathetic commentators, though, except the hockey guy.

There was a discussion with Bruins fans on the main board... I know that Rask is considered one of the most promising young goalies, but despite Varlamov's somewhat checkered start in the NHL, I feel good that he's got the attitude and the support to keep improving, patching up holes, learning to deal with failure, etc. He's on his way to becoming Russia's #1, Tretiak loves the kid -- they watched games together.. Not a bad guy to have as an extra mentor!

Hilarious - congrats Teddy

Now they need to get rid of Arenas.

Langway 05-19-2010 06:33 PM

A good showing for local products as five players from Team Maryland's U18 team were taken in the USHL entry draft earlier today. Casey Thrush is ranked among the top 100 NA skaters for the upcoming NHL draft and former Caps pick Luke Lynes' younger brother, Jake, was also among the five. Thrush and Maxim Gaudreault will eventually join Sorkin at UNH.

Ovechkin: You come play in Washington
Parise: But you guys have Semin
Ovechkin: He take pay cut for you
Parise: If that's the case, sure

:sarcasm:

Btw question regarding the Worlds, is Volchenkov playing for team Russia?

I believe he's not playing due to being a bit dinged up.
