Petteri Nummelin!

Congrats Nummelin, best defenseman of world champs again.

Truly an institution in finnish hockey.

Best defenseman in World Champs years: 2000, 2010 (should've been in 2001 and 2006 as well).

He also has 5 selections to the world champs all star team.

Congrats!

Why wasn't he able to stick in the NHL?

PanniniClaus 05-23-2010 10:31 PM

He is a treat to watch.

Became a shootout specilaist for the Wild.

Not efficient enough defensively on the small ice I'd say. He's not bad defensively nowadays though. Not at all.

Because Doug MacLean thought that Mattias Timander, Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre, and Jamie Heward were better-suited for a team that couldn't score at a meaningful pace.

He had a rough patch at the beginning of his one-year tenure in Columbus, probably related to having never played on the NHL surface before. Toward the end of the year, he'd really started to make the adjustments and look like an NHL-caliber player.

mattihp 05-23-2010 11:41 PM

It's weird that it took until 2000 for him to get a chance in the NHL though.

He was awesome on the european level already in 1994. As a comparison his oft linemate Marko Kiprusoff got his first chance in 95-96 with the Canadiens.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see how he was the best defenceman in the tournament.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson or Magnus Johansson were far better choices (granted, blue and yellow glasses due to me not seeing all the teams, perhaps there were other candidates more worthy.

Though, not Nummelin!:help:

Your glasses also constantly hinder you from seeing a finn doing any good.

The only defenseman IMO who had a showing consistantly on Nummelin's level or close to it was Rachunek. He had a really good tournament.

OEL has a case... Johansson... not so much. He was directly responsible for a few goals against and you could easily give him the blame for the czech 2-2 goal aswell.

I think Nummelin was the best defenseman even though I find it very weird a player not even playing in the semis gets an "award" like this.

OEL was brilliant IMO. One of the brighest shining young defensemen to ever play in this tournament.

It is as much a case of other star defensemen either not playing up to level or not coming at all as it is Petteri being a very solid defenseman who is still developing at an old age.

Yeah Nummelin is almost one of a kind... he's grown a whole lot in my eyes and even at old days like this he is still improving. And I have huge respect for player suiting up for the national team every single time since he is one of few.

The fact that they didn't pick OEL just continues to astound and confuse me.

OEL was good, but Nummelin was noticably better. They pick the best one, not the young one who is close to being as good.

MJAYK 05-24-2010 02:58 AM

Congratz, Petteri! You deserved it.

As for the Swedes complaining here, dont worry. The time will come when Petteri will no longer play in these tournaments. ;)

I like Nummelin but OEL and Miroslav Blatak were the best D here.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I only saw 4 of Czech games though. I saw all Sweden games and all Finland games.

Dominus 05-24-2010 05:00 AM

Yeah, gongrats Nummelin! We'll miss you when you hang up the skates... Come to think of it, that's horrible actually. 37-year old vet is by far our best European-based defenseman and there are not many better in North America either, and Timonen and Salo are 35... Oh god, we'll suck... :help:

KRM 05-24-2010 05:10 AM

My favourite player growing up, congrats Petteri!

OEL should have won it though. :p:

Juzmo 05-24-2010 05:56 AM

Plesently surprised. Congrats to Nummelin.

You can't be serious...

I saw two of Finlands games, and he looked weak and out of position defensively as usual.

This is the guy who couldn't hack it in the NHL, on one of the worst teams (at the time).. He didn't even get to play for Finland during the last Olympics despite their very weak defence, right?

Nummelin was nursing an injury during the olympics. And I don't know what games you saw, or what player you were looking at, but it clearly wasn't Nummelin.

Yes... We all know you dislike Finns. Thats okay cos i/we dislike swedes. But when we take our blue and yellow / white and blue or whatever glasses. We have to see that Nummelin was basically the only scoring threat team Finland had. Guy was involved in nearly the half of the finnish goals. And in few games Nummelin was almost as magical as he was back in his glory days few years ago. Without him our team would have been in the relegation series instead of USA. Nummelin has never been a defensive monster. His skills are somewhere else. Still he was best overal defender in finnish team.

And you just cant ignore the fact that he was the leading scorer (goals + assists) among defencemen.

And what has some past NHL games or not getting selected to olympic team got anything to do WC 2010? If thats the only criteria to choose All star or MVP.s then no one in the swedish team goes ahead Nummelin.

Start your own OEL thread and hype him there if you want people to praise him :sarcasm:

Your hate is getting hilariously out of hand. He was chosen by the IIHF board. Just swallow it!

Spawnisen 05-24-2010 09:49 AM

Lol Nordic, I have no idea what games you watched but his passes was,as usual, perfect on the stick.

The glory days where he was a healthy scratch on the worst team in the NHL?:sarcasm:

I saw them against Denmark and Russia, both very average performances from golden buy Petteri.

And there's more to hockey than passing, for instance defence.
