Rangers get blueliner Niemi from Isles

Quote:

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Jyri Niemi from the New York Islanders in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The Rangers and Niemi have agreed to terms on a contract.

Trade those picks Glenn.

NYR2007 05-25-2010 02:54 PM

does he have a shot of cracking the line up ?

NYR Boyler87 05-25-2010 02:55 PM

From HF:

"2007-08: This talented Finn had a nice season in Saskatoon, putting up 34 points (14 goals) in 49 games from the blueline. He had some issues with a bad wrist and a foot injury, which limited his appearances. He was clearly able to contribute when he was in the lineup, however. Also of note is the power of his shot, clocked at 97 mph at the Top Prospects Competition. He has had surgery on his hip, too, and this clearly contributed to his dropping a bit on draft day."

Stats:

He is a former 3rd round pick in 2008 and looks to have had a pretty successful junior career. Looks like a good deal. Maybe he wouldnt sign with the Isles?

The guy looks like a legitimate NHL prospect. His shot was clocked at 97 MPH 2 years ago. Not the worst trade I have seen.

Ian 05-25-2010 02:56 PM

Not awful, much better chance this guy ever sticks in the NHL than whoever they would have picked in the 6th.

Just about to turn 20, 30 point player in juniors.

4. Jyri Niemi, D – Saskatoon Blades (WHL): If the Finns get to the medal round (which they likely will), Niemi will be playing on home ice. But his responsibility will begin in Regina during the round robin. Finland's prospects will peak next year, meaning the 2010 tourney will be decided by older juniors such as Niemi, who has improved on last year's down season. Drafted 72nd overall by the Islanders in 2008.

Hmm. Don't know much about him, but on the surface, sounds like a better value than whatever we'd get in the sixth round.

Yea it was just a quick reaction on my part, hate when the picks get traded. Looks like a good trade to me, nice job Slats.

Definitely. Not sure how anyone can get mad at this. Sather stocking the cupboard with another talented blue-liner.

Maybe they're trying to get the inside info on Granlund? Queue the back to back Finnish picks talk! :sarcasm:

broadwayblue 05-25-2010 03:02 PM

seems like a low risk move. can't complain about dealing a low round pick for a young guy with upside. i do wonder if Niemi has simply been unlucky or has durability issues.

Its understandable to be skeptical with Sather.

He was projected to go in the 2nd round in 2008.

Fitzy 05-25-2010 03:04 PM

hm. Whatever. Guy was outperformed by Klassen, I dont think he'll make an impact one way or the other.

Yeah, he's almost 20 years old already. :sarcasm:

a former 3rd rounder for a 6th this year? whats the knock on this kid?

Klassen played 17 more games and recorded 1 more point. Also, points arent everything when it comes to defenseman.

bad wrist
bad foot
hip surgery

RangerBoy 05-25-2010 03:07 PM

The Rangers traded their 3rd in June to LA for Brian Boyle

Traded their 6th to NYI for Niemi

2011

Traded a conditional 6th in 2011 to SJ for Jody Shelley. If they re-sign Shelley,it becomes a 5th in 11

Traded their 7th to Phoenix for Anders Eriksson which was weird considering he was available on waivers a few days before.

I know, observe the +/-

The point im trying to make is that a 3rd round pick that atm doesnt appear to be any higher on the prospect depth chart than Kundratek is not a move I get excited about. He wasnt even on their top 20 prospects.

dccuse 05-25-2010 03:08 PM

Maybe slats felt he was worth more than a 6th in an attempt to trade up on draft day, like niemi and a 4th for a 2nd?

KreiMeARiver 05-25-2010 03:08 PM

Just from reading this thread it sounds like a good deal.

My favorite snippet of this thread:

"His shot was clocked at 97 MPH 2 years ago."
