Kings Sign Johan Fransson per Hammond/TSN

Apparently the Penguins were interested in him before he signed with KHL.

The Kings seem to have lost the rights to Swedish defenseman Johan Fransson as they did not sign him to a contract by June 1st.
Just in case you were wondering, this is a different Johan Fransson than the Red Wings' power forward. It appers Fransson has inked a two-year deal with Dynamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League but no one has yet confirmed that fact. In any event, it does not seem as if the offensively-gifted rearguard, who registered 30 points in 54 games in the Swedish Elite League in 2009-10, will play in the NHL next season.

According to Norrbottens-Kuriren (one of the local newspapers in Luleň), Fransson has signed with the Kings.
No details, but apparently, he will not stay in Luleň and he won't be moving to Minsk.
He's definitely going to LA, according to "reliable sources".

They might be wrong about this, of course, since it's not official yet. But these guys follow Luleň Hockey day in and day out, so there's probably some truth to this, at least.

EDIT:
They've updated the story now, and it's definitely true.

It's a one-year two-way deal.

Fransson:
"I'm so ****ing happy. It's a dream."
"I signed the contract yesterday (i.e. Monday)."
"I'm going there with the intention of playing in the NHL, of course."

Wow, that's surprising but the source is definitely credible with quotes from the player himself. Another guy to compete for a spot on the blueline in training camp and if nothing else, add even more depth to Manchester (ridiculously deep on defense already). A one year deal should be good for both sides.

Wow, i can't believe players like Fransson gets NHL contacts these days. Great skater, but he is horrible defensively and has no hockey sense. I would be very surprised if he gets more then 5-10 games in the NHL.

AKAY47 06-15-2010 10:03 AM

He probably won't even get an opportunity in the NHL. Probably going to send him to Manchester, we'll have a very stacked D core in Manch.. Bring Voynov up!

Are you saying the Kings just signed Randy Jones????

Reaper45 06-15-2010 10:51 AM

The Kings signed a kid who is far better offensively than Jones. But yeah, I think he's going to be our #6 this year.

From eliteprospects bio

Fransson is an excellent skater with loads of offensive potential. He is extremely mobile, agile and moves the puck very securely. Fransson has a good release and is, unlike many other young defensemen, not afraid to challenge the opposing players and do the unexpected. He is very creative with the puck and also very good at reading plays. His passing game is above average and Fransson is not afraid to get involved when things get rough. On the downside he could still improve his defensive game and at times he is a bit risky with the puck, trying to accomplish too much.

Yea, but he improved a lot this year when he had to take on a #1 role for the first time in his career.

Well. You're clearly basing your comments on his time under Slavomir Lener, and as far as I know, he won't have to deal with the mustached Czech in North America.
He had a phenomenal season with Luleň this year, playing with a lot of confidence and showing just why he was such a highly touted prospect before Peter Nordstr÷m took his head off and Lener came into the picture.

That said, he still has a lot to prove if he's to make it in the NHL.

Johan to the jrescue!

Ziggy Stardust 06-15-2010 11:30 AM

At least Johan Fransson is not flat footed as Mr. Jones...

KINGS17 06-15-2010 11:43 AM

A puck moving defenseman, who at the very least can play in Manchester. What's not to like?

SFKingshomer 06-15-2010 11:47 AM

Pretty sure this is the kid from the Norstrom trade. He's got plenty of school, hopefully he transitions nicely to NA.

Yes he is. And he's 25. Worth a shot to see if he has the skills to play in the NHL. Will be fun to see which young dman wins a spot.

Buddy The Elf 06-15-2010 11:54 AM

Hmmm... well that gives Manchester some depth for when one of those defensemen are traded in the next few weeks. :sarcasm:

Since he's similar to Voinov and Hickey....

johnjm22 06-15-2010 12:12 PM

Considering how good the SEL is, his numbers are pretty impressive.

He was the 5th highest scoring defenseman in the entire league last year.

They're both Swedish and that's where the comparisons end.
