Burke: No Kovalchuk for Leafs

Quote:

Devils and Kovalchuk still talking but he's headed to market. Brian Burke told me today Leafs won't be involved in Kovalchuk sweepskates
Quote:

LA still makes most sense to me for Kovalchuk. KHL's Medvedev also wants him but he also has to wait until July 1 to get an answer ...
Quote:

Kovalchuk doing right thing by weighting all options July 1. Still time to get back to Devils and Medvedev July 1 once all is on the table
Quote:

I've got a Kovalchuk blog coming later here's what Burke told me today: ``We’re not going to be involved in that race,” Burke said of Kovy.

Sad that he's not even interested.

Guest123 06-14-2010 01:16 PM

Good for Burke. He just needs to focus on slowly building his team. Adding Kovy would really restrict his money flow for rebuilding. Kovy should go to a team that is ready to compete now.

Belak Attack 06-14-2010 01:16 PM

Not surprising. He doesn't want to pay the money or the term. He should atleast throw an offer at him, and give him a percentage in jersey sales. We all know he'd sell a ton of them.

heck naw

MIKE GUNDY* 06-14-2010 01:18 PM

tampering, etc.

Leafs clearly are not rebuilding.

Rebuilding teams dont come out and say "JULY 1ST WILL BE OUR DRAFT DAY"

leafmon 06-14-2010 01:21 PM

Does he have a list of who is interested.......Oh I guess that would be tampering. Something that Burke has been burned by.

Ice Cream Man 06-14-2010 01:22 PM

I don't believe it.

According to this board and all major media outlets, Burke is chasing absolutely everyone all the time.

MeestaDeteta 06-14-2010 01:23 PM

I don't blame any team for not wanting any part of Kovy. For the price he's asking - he had better be one of those few players that makes others around him better. Anything more than $6M and he's not worth it IMO.

How many teams ready to compete now are able to throw 8-10 mill at a winger?

A team that finishes second to last should be thinking like EDM. Build around Kessel and draft.. wait..

Sorry.

Maybe you should push for Kovy.

FolignoQuantumLeap 06-14-2010 01:25 PM

Good news if you're a Leafs fan. Committing another huge salary to a one dimensional player like Kovalchuk would have been a questionable move at best. They don't have the youth to counterbalance his salary demands and be competitive. At least build some strength down the middle Burkie.

TOML 06-14-2010 01:25 PM

...Again, that is.

Never certain why anyone would think Kovy would sign there anyway.

LA.COL.SJ(with certain trades). There are teams out there.

mcphllp 06-14-2010 01:27 PM

damn, i was hoping he would be, oh well, Bobby Ryan and Patick Marleau are nice consolation prizes

Traktor* 06-14-2010 01:28 PM

Yeah because I bet Kovi was just licking his chops thinking of playing with Toronto's top center Bozak.

Let me guess.. Burke no longer is planning to trade for Edmonton's 1st round pick either...

Sherman has made it clear he won't be pursuing a player like Kovy this off-season. Not that the Avs ever give away their intentions, but I would be surprised if they even throw Kovalchuk an offer.

Canuckle 06-14-2010 01:30 PM

Could have just signed Kovalchuk and kept the 3 high picks from Kessel deal and prolly even picking first in this year's draft.

Probably, but it'll be like $6m or something equally unrealistic.

I was secretly hopeful he might pull something off but never really expected it. Hope it shows we're not going to try and cheat in building a team that can consistently make the playoffs.

If the Toronto media attention bothers you so much, why do you keep clicking on the threads? Every single one you come in with your usual boring anti-Toronto cynicism.

Build around Kessel, Phaneuf, Kadri, Schenn, and a few of their other promising young players, I agree. ;)

As for Kovalchuk, I for one never really expected we'd be bidding for his services.

Ignoramus* 06-14-2010 01:33 PM

The Leafs are an absolute mess. I see things getting slightly better for 1, maybe 2 seaons, then the wheels will come off again and the team will be worse off than it currently is.

Throwing away draft picks has abolutely decimated this franchise. They are 4 years into a rebuild and it's already time for another rebuild. You can't keep pissing away draft picks.
