Good work. Give him a 5% raise and 2 years. Done and done.

Will his contract be affected by the 35+ rule if he signs for two years? He is 34 atm and his birthday is Feb 7.

If the 35+ rule doesn't affect him, I'd love to have Shelly back on the team for two years, even if it does affect him I'd still be inclined to bring him back.

Shelley made a difference here, and even though we have some kids who'd love his spot on the fourth line, I say its great that we are trying to retain him. He made other teams truly afraid to run Hank and Gabby, and keeping them healthy is worth Shelley's price tag.

YES!!!!

Shelley and Prust must stay. Two good role pieces who MANNED UP and frankly gave this team a shot down the stretch. Adds grit, toughness and at least a chance of some secondary scoring once in a while

RangerBoy 06-21-2010 09:08 AM

After the NHLPA votes today, the Rangers will have a better handle on the upper limit. $56.4 million or $58.8 million.

n1cON 06-21-2010 09:14 AM

Would be nice if we can keep him in NY. As somebody told before me: Prust & Shells gave the team more grit & toughness.

While I am absolutely 100% behind bringing Shelley (and Prust as well) back, it still isnt the type of "toughness" we need to be adding. Shelley and Prust are "reactionay" guys. We need to be adding some people, whether it be at the forward position or on the blueline, who are willing to stand up for their teammates and impose a physical threat while playing more than 5-8 minutes a night.

He will not fall under the 35+ rule. Players who are 35 as of June 30 who sign a multiyear SPC are subject to the 35+ rule.

Trust me, I made absolutely sure of that before suggesting a second year...

if you don't think prust stands up for his teamtes you're a whacko. shelley is more the show man but still sticks up for anyone

How much did Shelley make last year?

What ever he gets it better be UNDER $1 mil, and ONLY one year.

if hes on another team this summer il be very disapointed. he and the 4th line had such a big impact on *almost making the playoffs.

I didnt say that, what I said was that we need to get tougher with our top 6 and top 4, we cant have our "muscle" be sent out AFTER Hank gets run or someone takes advantage of Gaborik, thats all I said.

Even though they [Prust-Anisimov-Shelley] were clearly our best line at the end of the year, I worry that it was short-lived, or a fluke. We'll see I guess. I favor re-signing Shelley and Prust though.

Block More Shots 06-21-2010 10:37 AM

It really can't hurt to sign him to a cheap (maybe around 800k) 1 year deal. If he doesn't succeed or gets beat out of a spot on the 4th line, we can just leave him as a healthy scratch.

offdacrossbar 06-21-2010 11:41 AM

if hes resigned and voros is retained, its stupid.

we really dont need all these 4th line guys eating up cap space just because they take nice pictures and tweet cool stuff.

with shelley, prust, avery, boyle, maybe byers and voros weve got alot of grit, alot of size and some punching power but a total of 25 goals.

6 guys, 25 goals and @ 5 million + in salary

seems like we need to thin this group out a bit.

Don't disagree, but when weeding them out, you do want to make sure you keep the ones worth keeping. I'd rank them as follows:

Avery (although it's well established that I don't like him and would like to replace him, on THIS list he has to go to the top)
Byers (based on potential, only - he could easily move to the top of the list or drop to the bottom)
Prust
Shelley
Boyle
Voros

Furthermore, of everyone above, Shelley is the IDEAL guy to play 13th forward. Combine that with cheap cap hit, and obviously positive impact he had on the lockerroom/team psyche, and it's an easy decision for me to keep him on the squad. (Would love to dump Voros and potentially Boyle.)

Nemchinov13 06-21-2010 11:56 AM

I like Shelley and I think he was a difference maker after the trade deadline. Along with Prust. But... We have a LW in HFD by the name of Dane Byers and he has been a perennial 20 goal scorer in the A. I'd like to see what he can do. I don't expect him to be a 20 goal scorer in NHL, but I liked his hustle. He might also chip in a few from the fourth line along with Prust. Or Weise.

I like that idea of Shelley as 13th forward. Bye-bye Aaron. You were a hustler, but you just weren't skilled or consistent enough.

The Thomas J.* 06-21-2010 12:54 PM

Sheey & Prust brought a toughness & grit that the team lacked, Avery was the only guy who would get in deep with the bigger guys. Prust has some skill & he could be a guy I'd like to see here for years too come. It should come as no surprise that once Shelly got here teams stopped running Lundquist. Shelly should be signed & given a 10 to 15% raise.
