Rangers and Oilers; Girardi ...

I don't know if this has been posted before or how legit it is but supposedly the Rangers are talking to the Oilers about Girardi. We all know how much Renney liked Girardi, so maybe there is something to this? What are your thoughts? By the way I got this rumor off RangerFanCentral Wall.

NYROrtsFan 06-24-2010 09:34 AM

There are going to be a million rumors like this because of Renney taking over there.

Torts also seems to like Girardi quite a bit considering how he always lumps him in with Staal when discussing the D.

I'd keep Girardi personally. Guy is a solid defenseman and plays reasonably physical as well.

NikC 06-24-2010 09:36 AM

too bad he stands idly by while his team's star scorer gets attacked by a philly thug.

terrrrrible 06-24-2010 09:36 AM

Oh hey, more Zherdev talk. Not to derail the topic already but, would you guys want Z at the league minimum for 1 year?

Blueblood 2 06-24-2010 09:37 AM

Edmonton will go the offer sheet route if they can't get Rangers to agree to a trade? Thanks a bunch Tom Renney!

The Perfect Paradox 06-24-2010 09:38 AM

Sather was just quoted in an article not too long ago that Girardi is a part of this team's core. This isn't going to happen.

EDIT- Anybody know how credible his guy is? He has some other interesting rumors on his page.

Quote:

Should the two teams not come to an agreement, the Oilers will sign Girardi to an offer sheet.
Quote:

The Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins have also reached out to the Rangers and have inquired about Matt Gilroy.
Quote:

Paul Kariya is also interested in returning to the Anaheim Ducks, for what he is planning to be his final year in the NHL.
Quote:

Nikolai Zherdev’s agent has contacted the Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Kings, and Blue Jackets, in hoping to return to the NHL after a one year hiatus in Russia. It is said he is now willing to play for league minimum to be attractive to teams willing to give him a shot.

Finally, many GM’s around the league believe that Ilya Kovalchuk has already agreed to a deal in the KHL and his NHL playing days are over.

Yes, let's forever judge him based on that one mistake.

Levitate 06-24-2010 09:42 AM

That site seems pretty suspect to me

SingnBluesOnBroadway 06-24-2010 09:44 AM

Take this with a grain of salt.

NYR Boyler87 06-24-2010 09:45 AM

What would Buffalo need with Gilroy? They have a few defensive prospects who are NHL ready. Weber are the two that come to mind immediately.

NikC 06-24-2010 09:46 AM

i know this guy from a BB i used to post on: WeBleedBlue

he is moderately dependable.

OverTheCap 06-24-2010 09:46 AM

I'm not sure if I'd trust an 18-year-old as a source...

Can't imagine the Oilers offer sheeting Girardi. Kevin Lowe more or less said he's done with that sort of a thing. No more overpaying other team's players.

Lowe isn't GM anymore. Steve Tambellini is.

i'll forever judge him for getting beat outside constantly, however this was a pretty awful situation that transpired.

i have no problem keeping Girardi, however i would like to see him lift his game and start defining himself more.

ha, you know this guy as well? you post on WBB?

jniklast 06-24-2010 09:51 AM

Last year upwards from $3.02 millon the offer sheet compensation was a 1st and a 3rd round pick, assuming that number doesn't rise too much I'd probably match everything under that value, or otherwise take the picks and run as fast as I can.

But Lowe is still President.

Here's what he said a month ago:

Quote:

"We've got to get back to what we did for a lot of years," Kevin Lowe, Oilers hockey boss, told reporters in Oklahoma City on Wednesday . "We've got to get back to our basic principles of drafting and development, get out of the free agent business."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether Lowe and Tambellini will do the right things this summer is another issue, of course. Lowe showed he can manage a tight budget under the Edmonton Investors Group from 2000 to 2004. He's simply got to get back to that mindset, even if he is free to spend to the top of the cap.

Can't imagine that the Oilers will surrender draft picks to overpay Girardi as an RFA.

Girardi for pick #31? Everyday of the week!

No, but Edmonton offer sheeting Girardi seems to defy all logic considering their gameplan.

Greg Caggiano is a teenager who posts on a couple of other message boards. He has been banned by at least two of them for being a compulsive liar and attention hound. Don't believe a thing he says.

UAGoalieGuy 06-24-2010 10:03 AM

If Zherdev is willing to take the league minimum, you sign him every day of the week. I highly doubt that that is the case, though.

Because general managers never say things that are untrue in order to boost a players value.

It would hurt for the next year or two depending on how fast Mc + Sangs develope. In the long run I think it's the better move but I would rather keep him.

It also depends on what type of team the oilers will be next year. My guess, thats a great 1st round pick and we could draft someone who could impact imedieltey with a pick like that... most likely.

I don't know though. I like Mr. Girardi. He's still reletively young and has a lot to learn.

I would give Z a 2yr, 3m per (4m,2m) and stick him on the second line...

Avery-Dubi-Zherdev is a great second line that can pretty much do it all.

[Prospal or Jokinen]? - Christensen - Gaborik
Avery-Dubi-Zherdev

Thats a good top 6.

Actually he was banned for insulting another member. I used to be on the same board as him.

SingnBluesOnBroadway 06-24-2010 10:29 AM

Changed the title. This is not a rumor. It is speculation.
