Trade coming soon?

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=326254

"While the Sharks will pay attention to the free-agent market, Wilson said it's likely they'll be more active in trade discussions in the next few days"

So who do you think the sharks will be after. I think it's pretty obvious it will be a top 4 dman, but who is available and at what cost? I'm just praying it's not souray.

SJeasy 07-01-2010 09:44 PM

Souray and Kaberle will top the speculation lists.

I would look to the teams that overloaded on defense and see who they have to spare. Carle in Philly. Maybe a Pen. Bieksa/Ehrhoff in Vancouver.

Kubina and Corvo are still out there.

Fred Flintstone 07-01-2010 09:47 PM

i would like carle back

5H4RK5 07-01-2010 09:47 PM

A lot of teams are going to be unloading dmen because they are full. If we can get 1 that gives us QUALITY minutes that would be a victory and not overpaying. I rather give picks, a high priced contract or 2nd tier prospects rather than touch most of our roster.

Tealblood 07-01-2010 09:51 PM

carle or ehrhoff back would be hilarious. Especially ehrhoff since we dumped him for nothing.

I'd rather hope for coburn than carle, carle has improved but I like coburns grit.

Rather than kaberle I like beauch, but I'm guessing burke loves him too and he's nowhere near the block.

I wont be really mad if we get souray unless he gets injured or we give up too much, I will if we get kaberle because burke wants too much for a year of kabs.

SharksAddict 07-01-2010 09:51 PM

A name I would keep an eye on is John-Michael Liles. Not sure what the Avs would want in return.

I remember hearing the Sharks tried to acquire him at the deadline.

Pinkfloyd 07-01-2010 09:56 PM

The guys that will be available for sure are Souray, Kaberle, Bieksa, and Sarich. I wouldn't mind Souray if the deal was for Murray, Mitchell, and Huskins. Kaberle for one year isn't worth it. Bieksa is a liability defensively but decent offensive skills that could be useful. If he's paired with Vlasic, it'd be fine but unless we're talking about trading Patrick White back to Vancouver, I don't see the point. Sarich sucks so there's no point.

Past that, there are other potentials but more unlikely. On the free agent market, I just don't see DW paying for Kubina or Mitchell.

Which is just stupid, because he'll end up acquiring someone with just as high of a cap hit if not higher in trade.

If there's a trade, I'd speculate that it's going to involve draft picks/prospects. If a roster player is involved, I'm gonna guess it's Clowe.

There's posters who think Murray's gonna be shown the door but I say that's unlikely giving his cap hit is the same as Wallin's, plays a similar game to Wallin, and is also much younger than Wallin.

If you sign an FA then decide to later trade him for draft picks, it keeps your prospect pool stocked. DW's has heavily relied on trading draft picks for rentals and getting nothing in return. It must be really hard to attract free agents to San Jose.

True but it gives him an opportunity to move salary out to accommodate for one coming in. If he just signs someone, he loses a bit of leverage in this regard. That whole Ehrhoff thing started because he kept signing guys like Blake and Huskins and didn't first find a home for Lukowich and/or Ehrhoff so as to avoid a plain dump of a good player with one that was replaced.

If you just sign and trade players, that makes your team less attractive to other free agents. Players like a stable job, just like you wouldn't like it if randomly your job got moved somewhere in the east from Cali out of nowhere.

It'd look bad if you signed someone and traded them within the year. But it wouldn't be so bad trading someone at the end of 2-3 year contract.

Slapshot_11 07-01-2010 10:30 PM

Wilson and Gillis were seen talking a lot at the draft... maybe you guys can take Bieksa?

Only if you take Huskins. :sarcasm:

I hope it's not Souray either because we could have gotten Foster on the cheap.

I agree, and believe that DW should have gone after volchenkov, michalek, Martin, gonchar (though not at the price tag he was awarded), and so on. One thing you can also do is trade the player they replace for other assets you need, or picks & prospects.

no, I like Huskins better than Wallin. so you can have Wallin

i agree that it appears a deal is coming - leave will be a D (Demers, Murray or Huskins) and we'll get a legit top 4 D back from those listed here. I'm thinking the flyers may move one out as they are swimming in D.

I'd take Colborn or Timonen.

Coburn is likely on the way out. And Philly doesn't really need to add a dman in return since they picked up Meszaros and O'donnell. SJ would have to offer a decent forward in return. I like Coburns combination of size and skating ability, but sometimes he just looks a bit lost out there.

Umm... Couburn was signed 2 yrs @ 3.2mil. He's staying.

BigDmitriy 07-01-2010 11:14 PM

They just re-signed him today - why would they trade him? Wouldn't that be like us trading Wallin - I'd like that to happen, but it won't...
Also, we should give Hammer an offersheet! ;)
