Who have you met at your local rink?
Just curious about who you've run into during drop in, sticks and pucks, or what have you at a rink.

Yesterday after a class, I met John Ogrodnick (Red Wings 50 goal scorer) as he was getting ready for a pickup game. A few weeks ago, I met Mark Mitera (U of M captain, first round pick by the Ducks) at sticks and pucks, and he was just RIPPING shots from the blue line at the posts and skating circles around everyone. It was pretty awe inspiring that the guy hasn't made it to the big club yet.

Anyone else have a story?

Nobody beyond a few ex-OHLers.

I'd be interested to know if any of the people that played with Maxim Afinogenov the other day are lurking around here.

I passed by Jaime Kompon, assistant coach for the LA Kings, on Tuesday. He's playing in the Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament here. His team has Igor Larionov on the roster but he was a no-show. :(

At one rink, Bruce Driver. He was coaching a kids team right before our game. And at another rink, Oksana Baiul(sp?). He wasn't very friendly. She was.

Most of the guys who play on the Suffolk Sting in PIHA(never made the transition from roller to ice, not enough time or money). I also just finished a season playing on a team with Mike Monfredo(NAHL, Motor City Machines).

Back in the day I went to a hockey school run by Paul Fenton, so even though it wasn't by chance I still ran into and skated/played with him a lot of times. We were about 12 and he never really turned it on though.

Teemu Selanne was at Anaheim Ice before one of our games. Just standing out in the entry way talking to people, no big deal. I was surprised at how small he was, seemed very slight but his legs are probably tree trunks.

Not here, but back when I lived in Colorado it wasn't uncommon to see Patrick Roy and Ray Bourque at the rink we played at(their kids played there on the same team). South Surburban rink in South Denver.

Our goalie got Roy to sign his helmet. He said: "Hey man, I'm gonna warn you, my stuff smells really bad."

Roy replied: "That's ok, my stuff stinks too."

After he signed the mask with the Sharpie, Roy replied: "Man your stuff really DOES stink!"

They were both very friendly hospitable towards us. Much respect for both guys.

He was a badass defenseman back in his day. He had a move where he could back-check, get quickly in just close enough to lift up the puck-carrier's stick, and then kick the puck forward.

He was THE MAN.

Kristi Yamaguchi :D I think she was doing some kind of fundraiser or something. I was hoping to see some triple axels.

Took an adult learn to play hockey class. Turned out the teacher was Jock Callander, all time IHL scoring leader who happens to have his name on the Stanley Cup.

Got schooled by 50-ish year old Bob Gainey at pickup hockey about 10 years ago.

Met Mike McPhee (Canadiens, Stars grinder back in the 80's/early 90's) and Ralph Strangis (Stars play-by-play guy) around town.

I saw Jagr playing tennis back when he was in Pittsburgh. Pretty good too. I had just got out of a tennis clinic and I saw like 30 people watching this guy warm up. Kind of felt bad for him, all he wants to go do is play tennis and he's got a crowd of people clinging to the fences watching his every move.

I also saw Fedotenko last year @ the snack bar in my local rink. Never realized how big the guy was. 6-2" and pretty jacked.

Met Dale Hunter when I was in pee-wee's. His kid was playing for the Little Caps at the time, and he was assisting with one of their practices. You could tell the guy just wanted to focus on the task at hand, but when word got out he was in the rink, he graciously signed everything that was thrust in front of him. I've always respected him for that. I also met Olaf Kolzig at the same rink, but it was an appearance coordinated with the Capitals, so it doesn't really count. Another total class act though.

The only NHL'er I remember seeing ever is Steve Thomas at a golf store while I worked there.

hoonking 07-17-2010 05:44 AM

My rink's hockey director is Jared Siganuk, used to play in the SPHL, and the GM of the rink used to play goal for the Phantoms when they were in Philly (Lance Rosenburg).

Skated a few times with Robitaille and Taylor, played against Bure and Zhamnov one summer, ran into Doug Gilmour, Steve Thomas a few times, all of them class acts, got an autograph from Gilmour to my daughter, on her 1st birthday, after I gave his kid 3 penalties lol.

I am sure there's a few more that I am forgetting, have run into quite a few over the years.

Razzmatazz 07-17-2010 06:54 AM

Michal Pivonka was an assistant coach for his kid's hockey team, and was trying to explain to me while I was scorekeeping a game that we should have been keeping the puck cold so it wouldn't bounce around. Keep in mind, these kids are playing with those crappy blue pucks in the games, and probably practice with real ones, so I seriously doubt it would have made any difference; plus it's the middle of July in Florida, the ice gets soft when it's 94 degrees outside. That man has a scowl that was tough to match, and the Czech accent that makes him seem all the more grumpy...not sure if he was even in a bad mood, but it just came off that way

Chris Dingman played on one of the teams in the top league; Vaclav Prospal's little kid was playing for the mite travel team (Vinny wasn't there, but since they have the same name, it was pretty obvious on the scoresheet); I've seen Tim Taylor watching his kid's games; and NHL linesman Johnny Murray is at the bar at the rink once in a while. I've also heard Larry Robinson has played there on occasion, but haven't seen him yet.

I met Driver after he had finished a men's league game in Hackensack. I was scorekeeping for the next game so I got to watch the earlier game finish. Driver's a pretty good goalie.

I also met Pat Dapuzzo the linesman, and John Vanbiesbrouck at the Ice House too. I got to play with John Madden at open hockey during the lockout.

When I lived in Portland I met Paul Gaustad a few times (also went to a camp ran by him and my old coach Matt Bardsley (scout for the winterhawks).. In Dallas Marty Turco came and talked to us before one of our games and we used to work out in the Stars' weightroom sometimes so ran into a few there too

OkimLom 07-17-2010 12:41 PM

Pat Kane at a floor hockey game...Rob Ray in my store. Derek Roy at a poker game(Not the casino one, a private one)

I ran into Colton Gillies. When I first saw him from a distance, I was thinking. "Great, it's some Drop in superstar with all matching gear." I realized who it was when I got closer though :P
