Let's see them.

Also, Grade each line in comparison to the rest of the league's 1st, 2nd, 3rd line etc...

A+ - Top 2 in the league
A - Top 5 in the league
B - Top 10 in the league
C - Top 20 in the league
D - Bottom 5 in the league
F - Bottom 2 in the league

Felonious Python 07-21-2010 05:28 PM

It's a wee bit premature for a thread like this, but right now, I'd say the Lightning's lines put them definitely somewhere in the top-30 teams, easily.

I'll bite.

Downie-Stamkos-MSL =A+/A Top 3....
Malone-Vinny-Gagne=A
Harju-Perrsson-Purcell=C
Chewie-Thompson-UFA=C to A depending on who we sign.

Whatever it is, our defense will not be as good as Montreals, Phillys, or anyone else in the league.

HF made that clear to me today.

Guys, we need defense.

and I'll bite on this one.

Who's D is better, NJ or TB?

NJ:
Andy Greene
Henrik Tallinder
Anton Volchenkov
Colin White
Bryce Salvador
Mark Fraser
Anssi Salmela

TB:
Mattias Ohlund
Pavel Kubina
Victor Hedman
Mike Lundin
Paul Ranger (possibly)
Matt Smaby
Matt Lashoff

If you're referring to overall team defensive ability, then yes, I'd agree.

Pffft. Even if we rebuilt our defense, we still have sucky goaltending, the worst bottom six in the East and a newbie coach with a "boutique" "new age" style of play that may have flown in the AHL, but will never fly with the veterans. Just thought I should let you guys know. I myself was not aware until I read various sections of HF.

seriously. after losing mesz and walker, im not sure how our dcore will recover within the next decade.

honestly, top 6 is as good as any, defense is in the bottom half of the league (up from cellar), the bottom 6 needs a solid peice or 2, and goaltending is 33% chance hit, 33% chance miss, 33% chance foul ball, 1% chris shafered

BadHammy* 07-21-2010 09:05 PM

Since we don't know what's up with Ranger (I actually had a dream about that the other night, I was somehow friends with his agent and got to meet and talk to him) and Lashoff sucks, I'm in favor of us looking for one more defenseman. Is Paul Mara still available? Blast from the past, baybee!

Yzerplan 07-22-2010 10:04 AM

Its still really early in the off-season, still lots to be done. But it could look something like this:

Forward

Malone - Stamkos - St. Louis
Gagne - Lecavalier - Downie (assuming hes re-signed)
Harju - Persson - Purcell
Jones - Thompson - Sczcechura
other possibilities: Ashton, Wright, Hutchings, Tyrell

*notes - Ideally Harju/Persson would show same chemistry as when they played together before and provide strong enough two way play to anchor the third line, with Purcell thrown in to provide some more offense. 4th line is basically made up with three guys who are under contract, personally i think Chewy is AHL bound not enough grit. I think any of those four forward prospects could crack our lineup with strong enough camp as it stands right now, pending any other UFA signings.

UFA watch - Arron Asham, Jeff Halpern, Eric Belanger, Dominic Moore, Sean Bergenheim, Raffi Torres

Defense

Ohlund - Kubina
Hedman - Lundin
Clark - Wishart
extra: Lashoff
other possibilities: Quick, Smaby, Ranger

*notes - I really think Wishart is going to show up and surprise a lot of folks in camp. Took a big step forward last season and I think hes ready. I think Ranger is done in Tampa, I think if he was going to come back from whatever it the issue is, he would have already. Lashoff is on a one way contract according to capgeek but still doesn't guarantee a roster spot. He shows up and works his arse off then he'll be the 6th or 7th d-man. Smaby has not played as much hockey as I'm sure thew new Lightning brass would have liked, and I think he'll either be sent to AHL or claimed off waivers.

UFA watch: - Denis Grebeshkov, Shaone Morrisonn, Christoph Schubert, Andy Sutton, Ruslan Salei, Paul Mara

Goaltending SET!

1A - Dan Ellis
1B - Mike Smith

Kusic 07-22-2010 10:17 AM

Forward

Downie - Stamkos - St.Louis
Malone - Lecavalier - Gagne
Harju - Wright - Purcell
Persson - Thompson - Tyrell

UFA watch: Brendan Morrison, Eric Belanger, Dominic Moore, Richard Park.

Defense

Hedman - Kubina
Ohlund - Lundin
Clark - Lashoff/Ranger

UFA watch: Denis Grebeshkov, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Willie Mitchell.

Oh how nice it would be to sign either or both of Hanson and Neal. I don't see it happening though. Both of their respective teams would match whatever we offer, and Hanson isn't worth a 3rd, if it comes to that.

Calder spent much the past season for the Marlies, (via Anaheim, who ended up not making the playoffs. The Ducks apparently didn't think highly enough of Calder to send to their actual affiliate. He also spent 5 games in the ECHL last season) I don't see how he'd contribute. There is an upside to him that I like, but don't feel it's worth taking the chance, given the options available.

Ryan Carter is hardly worth it. 120 NHL games, 26 pts. 26 y.o.

Comrie's not terrible. Has a bit of a bad reputation, which concerns me.

St.Louis-Stamkos-Downie
Gagne-Lecavalier-Malone

What will the 1st & 2nd power play units look like now???

Depends on the coaches I guess. ;) I think it's save to say Stammer will be used at the left circle again with Kubina at the point. Vinny should be the 1st unit's center with Marty on the right side. There are a lot of different possibilites: Malone or Vinny in front of the net or they could put another sniper on the 1st unit in Gagne.

Something like this maybe:

Gagne - Vinny - Marty
Stammer - Kubina

Purcell - Malone - Downie
Ohlund - Hedman

Doctor Drej 07-24-2010 03:37 PM

I'm thinking Gagne will probably be 2nd PP. We need either Bugsy or Downie to be in front of the net, unless Gagne is just as good at it as either of those two.

2nd Unit has to be just a tad under the 1st Unit in terms of capability. I think that's what hurt us last year, we frontloaded the 1st unit (which was fantastic no doubt) but when the 1st wasn't doing anything, our PP wasn't doing anything because our 2nd Unit was to be desired really and it was to the point where Stamkos was playing both units.

OilBuoy 07-24-2010 05:52 PM

Martin St.Louis - Steven Stamkos - Steve Downie
Simon Gagne - Vincent Lecavalier - Ryan Malone
Johan Harju - Niklas Persson - Teddy Purcell
Nate Thompson - Marc Pouliot - Martins Karsums

extras: Blair Jones, Adam Hall

Mattias Ohlund - Pavel Kubina
Victor Hedman - Mike Lundin
Brett Clark - Ty Wishart

extras: Matt Smaby, Matt Lashoff

If Paul Ranger reports he takes over Lundin's spot on the second pairing and bumps Wishart back to the A

1A - Dan Ellis
1B - Mike Smith

Tyrell or Hall for Karsums:

He just re-upped with Dynamo Riga for two more years. http://www.apollo.lv/portal/sports/articles/209574

But I assume Steve Yzerman will add at least one more player from outside the organization to our bottom-6.

Paul Ranger

Was there a date specified as to when Paul Ranger would be required to decide on whether to join the team or not?

None that we know of.

Based on what Yzerman has said and done since first talking to Ranger, when he was also not aware of the nature of the situation, I'm assuming that Ranger is in fact finished.

I've all but written Paul Ranger off at this point.

Barbadian91 07-25-2010 08:18 PM

What exactly happened to Paul Ranger?
