Voinov to leave for KHL if he doesn't make Kings?

dchesnokov:

"Traktor's (KHL) Director said #LAK prospect Voinov and #FLA prospect Dadonov will return to KHL if either can't make NHL team this season."

greengiant91 07-23-2010 05:42 PM

I think he makes it

deano 07-23-2010 05:55 PM

If that's true, then it's just another reason not to draft a Russian player. Voinov's development has been nice and steady, but outside of a great shot from the point, and a willingness to play physical, his game is far from polished. Kolomatis finished with just about the same point total, and finished on a strong note, while Voinov seemed to disappear at the end of the year. I'm not sure if there was an injury to Slava, but another year in the AHL for a defenseman his age can only be a good thing. He's what? 20, 21? To young and too soon to start panicking and running home because things aren't progressing as fast as he'd like. I'd hope he is more mature, and has more character than that.

Buddy The Elf 07-23-2010 05:56 PM

I remember him saying that in an interview last year. Now if he doesn't make the team, the Kings will still have his rights for a finite period of time correct? And if he was to go to the KHL and perform well, is there a chance he could come back if there was an injury or possibly invited back to camp next year?

kingsfan 07-23-2010 06:02 PM

It may be a good idea for him (financially and developmentally wise) to do so if he doesn't make it, but I have him as the guy who does make it (along with Fransson).

Teubert needs time in the minors and Hickey needs a full season in Manchester as well. Drewiske I have as the 7th D. The wild cards could be Martinez and to a lesser extent Campbell, though I think they both go back to Manchester.

Martinez would seem the second tier prospect most likely to get traded this year, as he's potentially NHL ready.

socalpuck 07-23-2010 06:02 PM

He has to earn it. It will not be given to him. I would like him to play on a line with JJ

CowMix 07-23-2010 06:05 PM

As long as he only signs a one year contract to play in Russia I don't really see a huge problem, would it really hurt his development that much? The negative side I see is he can't be called up if there are any injuries which is pretty bad for him because he would probably be the first to be recalled.

Would suck for him, but there are a lot of defensemen in Manchester that can be used for a call up.

If Voynov comes to camp in great shape and wins the #6 job, then good for him. If not, have fun in the KHL.

Sweet. This offseason was going to well something bad was bound to happen.

I thought he was ready, but reading Lombardi's comments, it seems like he has work to do.

Remember this was an issue when he was drafted. Some people thought he should've been a 1st rounder but everyone was nervous about these guys fleeing back.

The good news is that Loktionov was fine with playing in juniors and AHL.

Goallum 07-23-2010 06:19 PM

This isn't anything new. You guys think Zizou pulled the idea for his avatar out of his ass?

Skebo 07-23-2010 06:33 PM

This would surely be a bad move by Voinov. The Kings want their players to play their developmental hockey in NA, not in Russia. They'd prefer the development to happen in Manchester so these guys learn to play the Kings scheme. It just makes the transition to the Kings that much easier for these guys.

Ziggy Stardust 07-23-2010 06:38 PM

Regardless of what is said, I think Voynov has a great shot at earning a spot on the roster next season. The team is in need of a puck moving defenseman with a great first pass out of the zone, something Voynov can provide. I think one of the reasons Voynov was not at development camp was due to the likelihood of him competing for a spot on the pro roster.

Josh Deitell 07-23-2010 06:57 PM

Nobody said he's never coming back. It's not uncommon for this to happen and players to return after, especially at this age.

Cutty Sarkn3ss* 07-23-2010 07:03 PM

He's one of my favorite prospects and I'll be really bummed if he does leave. . but then again, I don't blame him . . .

This but I thought it was when he signed, said he would give it 3 years then back to mama if was not on the Kings. I believe this is the 3rd year. Guess ya cant ask for more seemed pretty fair and honest. He should make it though.

Cutty Sarkn3ss* 07-23-2010 07:14 PM

I think he's done more than enough to be given a shot. 2 years at the AHL level and putting up some solid numbers . . .

Exactly, we knew about it before. That said I see him having a damn good chance at making the team if Hickey is hurt again.

Johnny Utah 07-23-2010 07:55 PM

At this rate of Lombardi missing out on Martin/Hamhuis and we are almost in August and OD, Jones are gone I think there will be at least one spot for Voinov/Hickey or Muzzin.

Who said Jones is gone? ;)

CBGB 07-23-2010 08:09 PM

Could be tied to Frolov's decision I'm told since Voynov stays with Fro when he's in L.A.

You forgot Martinez as well. The Kings are also super high on Campbell (why, I don't know) as well.

Zad 07-23-2010 08:28 PM

If Martinez is the fall back on defense, we are so ****ing ****ed.

My prediction: Loktionov will never make an NHL roster on a regular basis.

Kingler 07-23-2010 09:23 PM

Great...now dean would never draft another European ever again

I can feel for Voinov though. He has been playing well the past 2 yrs in Manchester, yet he sees lots of players get promoted ahead of him. If the Kings can give him a few games this season, i think he will be happy

johnjm22 07-23-2010 09:41 PM

It's not that big of a deal if he goes to the KHL. Even if he does, he'll still be back at camp next year trying to make the roster.

His goal is to play in the NHL.
