Sabres sign Dennis McCauley

Rumor per Travis Turnbull's twitter is that the Sabres have signed Dennis McCauley for Portland.

Saw it in the Portland thread and thought it deserved its own thread.

McCauley is 6ft 3 and had 10 fights last year
a RW/LW he played for the Worcester Sharks, San Jose's farm team.
He is 24 and wil turn 25 in August he was never drafted and played college hockey for Northeastern.

My guess is, if Turnbull isn't just effin around, McCauley got signed because the Sabres aren't holding out hope that Mancari will re-sign. That would give the Pirates Tropp, Lagace, McCauley, and Conboy on the RW. Personally I'd like to see Legault up with the team, too.

ya seems like Portland is deep on the right side

It's funny we'd be talking about Portland's right side depth when less than a month ago, they had absolutely 0 depth at RW lol

I wouldn't quite call it deep, but it's better than a month ago for sure.

Now if only we'd get some guys for the LW, considering that with Gerbe and Ennis both possibly up full-time, we've got nothing there right now.

wildcat48 07-29-2010 07:30 PM

Without McCauley the Pirates only have 14 players signed... So depth means nothing until the roster is filled.

mechaphil 07-29-2010 08:09 PM

I dunno Chris, I'm counting 15 and that's without Gerbe or Stafford being demoted.

Chainshot 07-29-2010 08:09 PM

Good signing, but they still have more work to do.

I still think Conboy is down there to play on defense.

Buffaloed 07-29-2010 08:31 PM

McCauley is a LW

I've confirmed the signing with the Sabres...

Some sites say he plays both wing but he does shoot left

I guess last summer's enforcer signing for Portland, Jeff Cowan, is gone?

Based on that soundbyte response Regier gave the media today, that seems the inclination the Sabres are leaning towards. With McCormick locked in for an NHL roster spot and Niedermayer signed, that takes the two spots vacated by Mair and Ellis. Regier's prediction of a "competitive training camp" sounded like, unless Ennis and Gerbe flat-out steal one of the veterans' jobs, both could be demoted simply because their exemption from waivers gives the Sabres an easy out on making any personnel changes.

You don't really think the Sabres would be bold enough to resort to that? It may become the trendy solution to a lot of other teams with cap/roster issues but I can't see Quinn or Regier endorsing that - nevermind the liklihood that Stafford would never clear waivers.

:shakehead

Sabres have had discussions on bringing him back, but nothing yet....

I actually like this signing. Watched a few of his fights from last season on YouTube.

Or that they think Mancari has a chance to be one of the extra forwards in Buffalo this year.

SuperNintendoChalmrs 07-30-2010 10:59 AM

Isn't Gragnani going to be back in Portland?

I'm about as big of a non-believer in Mancari as anyone, but I think they'll at least give him a chance at being one of the 12-14 F guys. I think it'd suit it better than Gerbe, for instance (I also think there's a chance Grags gets a shot at being a depth F/D swing man).

Or maybe a Dennis McCauley signing is just a Dennis McCauley signing, to turn a phrase.

Dennis McCauley

how about McCauley, McCormick, and Kaleta for a fourth line?

He'd have to be surprisingly effective to make this current squad. Right now, pending camp, he's well down the recall list, let alone someone to make it out of camp.
