8/10/10 - Tuesday's Gone edition - Which former Pred would you like to see...
OK, today's DDT revolves around the following question:

If given the opportunity to add one former Predator to the current team, who would it be and why?

While you're thinking it over...taped in 2003 right here in Nashville as part of their Vicious Cycle tour here's Lynyrd Skynyrd performing "Tuesday's Gone" - (from this video R.I.P. - Hughie Thomasson, Ean Evans, and most recently Billy Powell)

Many directions to go here...

At forward, would you like to add back a guy that consistently put up points during his time here such as Paul Kariya or a young power forward like Scott Hartnell that really blossomed after being traded to Philadelphia in the midst of the Leipold firesale? Maybe a gritty, two-way player such as Scott Walker or an ace faceoff specialist like Yanic Perrreault or Scott Nichol? A jack of all trades with a doozy of a shootout move like Vernon Fiddler? The possibilities are endless...

On defense, where do we start? We've had some really good defensemen come through the organizations over the years and enter the season currently with Weber and Suter having the longest tenure as Predators after losing Hamhuis to free agency. Would you bring back a guy like Kimmo Timonen that provided steady, heady play at both ends of the rink in a quiet manner or Greg Zanon who I'm convinced would stop a point blank slap shot with his face if it meant saving a goal? How about an offensive specialist like Marek Zidlicky or Andy _elmore or even more recently Denis Grebeshkov? There is no right or wrong answer, heck even I'm baffled by the possibilities!

In goal, I think it'd be difficult to bring back many of our previous tenders since Rinne is slated to play 65-70 games this season, but it worries me that we're looking more and more like we're going to enter the season without another goalie in the organization with a single game of NHL experience! Vokoun was phenomenal during his time here and truly helped lead the franchise to where we are today. Chris Mason was the ultimate backup until he was called into duty when Vokoun had blood clots and Mason took advantage of the opportunity to launch a career as a starter himself. Dan Ellis arrived as the guy penciled in as the starter for Milwaukee and made a statement early stealing the No. 2 job out of camp and becoming the starter by season's end. Dan stumbled a little along the way and was surpassed by Pekka on the team's depth chart, but would you like to have him back if he'd settle for maybe 30 starts or so? I don't know...maybe a guy like Michael Leighton who had a cup of coffee here before taking off last season and leading the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals?

I look forward to hearing your opinions. So without further adieu...

Scott Nichol. We need his faceoff skills, shorthanded goals, and fearless-ness in trying to beat up Jumbo Joe. :( (I miss Scooter)

Assuming budgetary and cap constraints must still be honored, I'd like to see Radulov added back to the roster for this upcoming year. "Bang for the buck" would likely be very high.

Ignoring budgetary and cap considerations, having Kimmo Timonen back as our #3 defenseman for a year or two would really solidify the blueline.

if money is no object and the players are healthy I'd take kimmo and forsberg.

Darcy Hordichuk :sarcasm:

Rads though. Still young, still could put up a lot of points and really bolster our offense. Especially if project SK doesn't work out well in our favor.

PredsV82 08-10-2010 09:31 AM

for the purpose of this discussion I didnt consider Rads to be a "former" pred because he is still Preds property.

I do love me some Scott Nichol, but we have quite a few players like him in our organization.

This has to be Scott Hartnell. He's a big body that is more that willing to stand in front to the goal and get to rebounds or deflections. We don't have anyone like him in the organization (maybe Horny, but he doesn't bring the size). Id love to see Hartnell back in Black (and Blue)

True. If Radulov and his situation are ruled inadmissible (must be the Kovy decision sparking the legalese), then I'd bring back Hartnell. I'd make room for him by shipping out Tootoo and Ward (in addition to smaller parts necessary to make room).

While I like the team right now, I would feel better if Kimmo was on the defensive side of things.

For the discussion side of things why do several people want Hartnell back? Ive always thought he was terrible with penalties and for what he brought, Joel Ward has worked quite well while adding in defensive responsibility.

I wouldn't want Hartnell back either webersmash.

I always wished we kept Kariya (despite his playoff disappearance), BUT considering all the injuries he's had over the past 3 years, it's probably better that we didn't.

Kimmo would be nice, but only if we have unlimited amounts of money.

How about Andrew Brunette?

I like the idea of Nichol or Fiddler. I'd probably choose Fiddler.

If we were just talking bringing back a fave that fits in the mix, I think I'd choose Hartnell. However, if I'm trying to fill a remaining hole, not sure that does it for us. We have a ton of Fs - granted, several talented but unproven - but I'm not sure that's a significant enough step up over what we got to be the 'for sure' thing. Brunette??????

We need a goalie, but it's a guy to play 20 games. Can't be Vokie; even Ellis or Mason, as professional as they are, aren't really ready to settle back into that kinda' role.

D - well, that's where we had a near-elite guy that we lost who still plays at a high level, as well as a very good one. Not really arguable that we need a #3 guy back there, no matter how optimistic we want to be about our kids and how much time Cube can suck up. So, if money doesn't matter, Kimmo or Hammer would obviously fit. In the end, if it's one season we're talking, I'm taking Kimmo; multiple seasons, I'm taking hammer.

and if we actually have to consider budget, I'm going to the 4th line and a guy that can play the PK; if Fids is considered budget, that's my guy. If not, I'm gonna' live with the stupid penalties and take Nichol.

hockey diva 08-10-2010 08:12 PM

Hartsy or Scooter for me. Hartnell is a big body and isn't afraid to get dirty. We need more of that nastiness. Nichol was a beast in the faceoff dot, the PK and was able to pot a breakaway goal here and there. His OT winner in Calgary 2 seasons ago was the icing on a fantastic trip. Granted both of them have the stupid penalty syndrome but one hopes that some time away would have reformed them a bit.
