Are the Wild so irrelevant in the league that we could make up something about them?

Thought about posting this on the main board, but I'll try it here first. It feels like some days on here that no one (even those in our division) knows anything about the team besides the fact that they are based in Minnesota and have fans. There are plenty of reasons for it (see: MN Hockey and HF Boards Popularity) but after the last week I swear the Wild are so irrelevant across the league that something ridiculous could be made up about them and it would be accepted as fact. So is that possible or no?

On an unrelated note, the offseason needs to end.

1) I guess it depends on what we make up. You could try it. I'd play along.

2) It needs to end yesterday.

rynryn 08-13-2010 07:48 PM

what about us? at least vancouver fans take bloggers as serious media, so we could just have someone with a blog write up a "news" article. Wild are to be owned/ran by the public? With Leipold taking on a time consuming role in the Johnson & Johnson empire, he has decided to sell managing interest in the Wild to the public. A lottery every season of season ticket holders forms a board with one elected among those to act as the proxy in a governing Board of Directors with the other minority owners and VPs. Lottery winners have their season tickets refunded, have full access to a fully-catered owner's suite for the season, and enjoy VIP parking, but otherwise get no special privileges (don't get to hang out with the players or invite their friends to go "check out the locker-room"--stuff like that).

GopherState 08-13-2010 08:13 PM

That's not a bad one.

this providence 08-13-2010 08:38 PM

I think it'd be pretty funny. Especially rynryn's idea. Though there are people on the main boards who take things wayyy too seriously.

Agreed, but not just on the discussion boards. Sports all around has gotten way too serious in my opinion.

I like this. There is a lot of potential here.

The Wild have signed (Darby Hendrickson/Brad Bombardir/Wes Walz/Sergei Zholtok) to a two-year, $3.3M deal, so he can finish off his career with the team where he found his breakout success.

James Sheppard is illiterate.

Ownership turmoil may force the Wild to move to Albuquerque for the '11-'12 season.

THIS, YES

thestonedkoala 08-14-2010 02:12 AM

Lot of potential.

The problem is two fold; Minnesota plays in a tiny market. And secondly, they haven't made a major 'splash'. No huge free agent signing like Kovalchuk. They haven't picked in the top 3. They haven't come out of nowhere and deep into the playoffs. They are irrelevant because they haven't made any noise.

GopherState 08-14-2010 02:30 AM

Not a tiny market - seriously, we're the largest market in our division. No ****. Now if you want to talk about isolation, then that's something different. But we're not a tiny market.

Signing Zholtok would be just morbid...

Didn't you guys know that the X is on reservation land? Apparently there's some battle brewing in the state legislature about taking more than just a 30% cut to try to fund a new Vikings stadium. The talk is that the state wants around 40% but talks haven't gone smoothly. Minnesotans just might lose two of their teams in the same year since the Native American counselmen of Mystic Lake Casino are majority shareholders of the team soon-to-be formerly known as the Minnesota Wild. But Gopher, you're in school to be a lawyer. Surely you can come up with a grandiose lie. You could use the practice ;)

VelvetJones 08-14-2010 09:43 AM

The Wild are not irrelevant at all.

Great hockey market with real hockey fans, they just need a good run in the playoffs. I know you guys don't have a outspoken fanbase here and that's not a bad thing. Going to the official boards on the teams website shows me you guys probably have the nicest and most polite group of fans in the league.

They say Canadians are polite and nice in general but for sure not here with our kiddies.

Not really. The Midwest is a tough market but you aren't thinking nationally. The Wild is just not a national wide brand.

-"I havent even heard of some of these guys, and the ones i have heard of are well past their prime"
-"Hell this guy is dead"
- "well cross him off the list then"

No I get that given I made this thread. But Minneapolis is actually the largest market in our division despite being horribly isolated from every other team.

Minneapolis - 3.5M
Vancouver - 2.87M
Denver - 2.35M
Calgary - 1.26M
Edmonton - 900,000

BadHammy* 08-15-2010 04:46 AM

Here are a few I just thought of:

-They are considering giving a free boob job to one lucky fan every time a Wild player scores a hat trick at home.

- Penn and Teller are silent, minority owners.

- Xcel has been struck by lightning over 50 times.

I think you guys will have a much improved team this year, and will get more attention for it.

rynryn 08-15-2010 10:27 AM

boob job and a seat behind the home bench to show it off. can't let crazy divorce lurk there forever.

That is all well and good but because of that isolation and because they don't have any 'stars', they aren't a national brand and thus irrelevant in the NHL due to casual fans not caring.

GopherState 08-15-2010 01:24 PM

Quit agreeing with me!

mattihp 08-15-2010 02:04 PM

This coming season people will have the Wild on their minds anyway...

GopherState 08-16-2010 01:21 AM

Going through posts I've overlooked:

There are people on the official boards still? Seriously, this isn't me making myself feel better or anything - there's no one on there.

Or that our logo really is a unicorn.

1. This one won.

2. This one is just my favorite.

We're so irrelevant, Gopher's post was glazed over and went unnoticed... :sarcasm:
