Holmgren believes it will be a fight just to make the playoffs again

Does that mean we have to experience another inconsistent maddening regular season??? I hope not! Last year the brinkmanship was way too taxing....

See the interview below with Stan Hochman. It was posted on CSN philly.

I think he realized that we're heading into the season with Leighton/Boucher and Holmgren. That's frightening. For us. Not the opponents.

GoneFullHextall 09-07-2010 11:55 PM

he knows the east is going to be a dogfight and hes right.
did you expect him to say "we are the team to beat"?

dingbathero 09-07-2010 11:55 PM

Well Homer can thank himself for that!

This is hockey people. Getting into the playoffs is always a fight.

Giroux tha Damaja 09-08-2010 01:46 AM

They're trying to make the NHL play-offs with AHL goalies. Yes, that is going to be difficult. So Holmgren isn't completely brain dead, after all.

You are 100% correct.

Juicy Couturier* 09-08-2010 05:51 AM

You guys look for anything to bash Homer. I don't like a lot of the thing he did this offseason but did you really expect him to come out and say he thinks they will easily make the playoffs?

It was not always this way. He's done this to himself via this Summer's series of startlingly ******** moves.

You must not have kept reading. I said I don't like what he has done this offseason but let's be honest, if Homer came out and said he expects to win the East and be back in the Cup this year this thread would be 5 pages long about what a ****** he is if he believes that. It's just trying to find something to complain about at this point.

At this point?

I've been watching this same movie for a while now.

Yes. At this point. Like waiting for him to answer a question just to bash him regardless of his answer. Like I said if he answered saying the Flyers would easily make the playoffs this thread would be all about how he's an idiot if he believes we can win with Leighton/Boucher. Instead he answers it saying it will be a fight to make the playoffs and a thread is started anyway.

We all know he screwed up by not acquiring a goalie this offseason but this quote is so generic and somehow people spin it. 95% of the GM's in the league would give the same answer and there's only 1 thread. So yes, at this point its just getting tiring.

I'm surprised there are people posting who understand this (no offense). I expected this to turn into another Leighton/Holmgren bashing thread.

Hollywood Couturier 09-08-2010 07:01 AM

Stop turning every damn thread into Holmgren and Leighton hate. Everything he said was correct besides his Gagne comments he made on DNL.

DeadPhish5858 09-08-2010 07:18 AM

He isn't saying he doesn't think its a good team. What he is saying is the generic GM response that the league is good and its always hard to make the playoffs. This isn't thread worthy. Don't twist his words.

LEIFey 09-08-2010 07:33 AM

Guy is just being realistic. I'd rather him be humble and say that getting into the playoffs will be a fight than for him to be a schmuck and say that we have the cup in the bag.

JCameron418 09-08-2010 07:45 AM

What do you expect him to say?

"This years playoffs won't be that hard to get to. We'll play 100% every so often or when we feel like it and breeze our way into the playoffs this year."

DrinkFightFlyers 09-08-2010 08:23 AM

This is not a shock. The Flyers are in the toughest division in the East (arguably the league) and that division got tougher over the offseason. You guys will jump on Homer for anything. If he said "We are the team to beat this year" I'm sure you guys would be ripping on him for saying that.

GKJ 09-08-2010 08:32 AM

This is the new-NHL. It's a fight for everyone to make the playoffs.

looks like he had his "what the **** am i doing?" moment about two months too late.

Kaktus* 09-08-2010 08:46 AM

It was a fight last year too. If Jokinen scored or if Trots went with Gaborik against Boucher who knows.

Maybe it's some kind of GM achievement. NHL2010 had an achievement to beat an NHL team with it's own AHL franchise.

That said, I think we've really got to all take a step back and give it a good 20 games and THEN panic if need be.

No it isn't looking for something to complain about...I didn't have to look for ****, ya know. The things I'm complaining and criticizing about are not exactly of a nit-picking nature, they're front-and-center, larger than life. Paul Holmgren's mismanagement is bound to contaminate any discussion we can have involving him and the team at present (barring a concerted effort by everyone to ignore the elephant in the room).

Holmgren used to get criticized more than I thought was fair, and I said as much at the time. When everyone wanted his head for the Randy Jones call-up, I said I felt like people talked out of both sides of their mouth (talking about how player-friendly this organization one minute, and complaining when they go out of their way to do right by one the next). I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a long, long time. There is no doubt anymore, not in my mind.

So yeah, I brought it up that he sucks. You should probably get accustomed to hearing it, since mine is the majority opinion, and most likely will be for a while.
