NHL.com: "Malmo of the Swedish Elite Leauge"

So NHL has it that Malmö Redhawks is playing in the SEL...the truth is that Malmö is a very average 2-tier team. Wouldnt suprise me if the Malmö managment have told Columbus that they are an elite team, since it's a team with no self awareness. Malmö is also one of the teams that is supposed to play in the new Euro leauge, dispite the fact there is several other teams that is better run but is still to be left out.

Well, a big :handclap:  at NHL.com.

I never understand why Malmo was in Euroleague?? Any Sel team would fit better than this team! Anyone know why?

Money, large city, big arena..

Tomas W 10-03-2010 05:27 AM

Yeah the Swedish Hockey Federation is desperate to have successful team in south of Sweden. Is kind of like when they put NHL teams in Phoenix when there is a lot more interest and knowledge in citys as Halifax or Quebec or Winnipeg etc etc.

They paid 6 mill. SEK just to get into the Euroleague 'group' of Swedish clubs.

I bet Jackets think they're playing a SEL-team, too..

Petey21 10-03-2010 11:30 AM

Or maybe they didn't have any access to updated news and info, kind of like how EA never seem to have access to updated Euro rosters and jerseys for their NHL series. After all, Malmö did become the Swedish champions twice. In 1992 and 1994... ;)

As for this particular event, at first it was supposedly a game between Columbus and a combined Skåne team with players from both Malmö and Rögle, but somehow that idea didn't appeal to the fans and the Rögle players were kicked out. I bet those players must be excited about that, way to go Rögle fans...

excuse my unknowledge, but why Malmo is in Allsvenskan then?

Swedish league system is based on promotion and relegation, Malmö were relegated to Allsvenskan in 2007.

Well that shows there some passion for the team in Rögle at least. Go Rögle! Heart and soul of Skåne hockey.

Dude, that's Leonid Brezhnev (the Love Child), when he snuck over the border and checked out the KISS concert in Fürth during their "Alive!" tour, 1976.

How do you see Malmo this season in Allsvenskan? Do they have what it takes to go back in SEL?

No team from Allsvenskan will make it up this year, unless AIK goes bankrupt, least of all Malmö.

I'm just waiting for the official recognition that they suck and the firesale begins again.

Not even Leksand? They should have chance at least, one would think.

One could add that there is always a possibilty that no SEL team get relegated and no Allsvenskan team promoted, as there is a qualification series at the end of the season were the two worst SEL teams meet the top Allsvenskan teams. Funny enough though, there is pretty often that one of the SEL teams do get relegated.

It is not comparable hockey is second sport in terms of interest and in the 90´s they was number one when the team was good. In Phoenix hockey is 4 sport at best good or bad the interest in southern Sweden is strong but they fail in tradition the southern series in div 1 is with out competition the div 1 series with most fan support in the stands.

If I should be a little bit nice towards south Sweden teams, there are some depth down there, with a lot of teams in the after all second best leauge in Sweden. There is a decent youth movement (I guess for example HV71 is "vacuumcleaning" the southern parts of Småland on talent). Malmö and Rögle has been SEL teams and can be one again (if not that Euro Leauge starts of course, then there is a whole knew hockey map).
