Clearing House: Legein and Kalinski Could Be Next

From Seravelli:

According to the same source, Maroon wasn't the only player scolded on Wednesday. Stefan Legein, a former second-round NHL pick, and Jon Kalinski, who has played 22 games with the Flyers, were told to either right themselves or ship out - with Maroon's departure as an example.
Quote:

An organizational source told the Daily News over the weekend that Holmgren and the coaching staff felt Maroon was "setting a bad example" for some of the younger players on the team.

Holmgren apparently didn't want that to affect talented rookies Erik Gustafsson, Mike Testwuide, Ben Holmstrom and Luke Pither.
For those who thought Kalinski may get the call up in light of the injury to Nodl, consider this another brick in the wall.

I'm actually hoping this is part of a larger cultural change in the Flyers organization, headed, in part, by Lavi. Hopefully these guys get it in their heads that they are not above the organization, that they're expected to do certain things, etc.

A GM getting angry at under-performing prospects? Now I've seen everything!

Anyway, thanks for the info.

BillyShoe1721 11-01-2010 04:48 PM

Slowly their lack of being called up makes sense.

BringBackStevens 11-01-2010 04:50 PM

This sounds fishy to me. I have a hard time believing that Kalinski has a bad attitude. Maroon and Legein, not so much

And how would you know this?

six sigma 11-01-2010 05:20 PM

What in the hell is going on in Adirondack?

His involvement may not be too shocking in light of that past.

Maroon and Kalinski however have no blemishes on their record until Gilbert's arrival.

Garbage Goal 11-01-2010 06:03 PM

Yeah, this whole thing is ****ing fishy to me. We've never had serious problems with Kalinski, Maroon, or Legein before and none of them have a bad reputation (albeit the fact that Legein chose to take time off for hockey at one point).

HoverCarle* 11-01-2010 06:07 PM

especially because Holmgren has praised Kalisnki a lot in the past

Kalinski just got praised less than a year ago as one of Holmgren's top prospects.

This wreaks of incompetency.

GKJ 11-01-2010 06:16 PM

Great drafting.

PhilaFlyers 11-01-2010 06:20 PM

What a joke

ashamsmashem 11-01-2010 06:44 PM

i don't know why they don't get rid of gilbert instead.

Mgkibbles 11-01-2010 07:17 PM

There can't be that many bad apples down there, so like other have said, seems fishy.

HoverCarle* 11-01-2010 07:31 PM

When is that season ticket holder questions thing?

Beef Invictus 11-01-2010 07:51 PM

at some point it stops being the players, and starts being the coach. i think 3 of our best prospects is precisely that point.

Well, Maroon was our best forward prospect.

Kalinski was our most ready forward prospect.

Legein was our big acquisition forward prospect.

Nodl, if you still count him as a prospect, was on the Flyers at the time.

Pither, who was mentioned briefly, was also effected by this recent mess and was benched. Testwuide and Holmstrom also mentioned as being partially influenced by this nonsense.

Wellwood is the only one of our real forward prospects not tainted by this along with Nodl, who was with the Flyers recently, but who knows what happened last year.

That's a lot of forwards just suddenly becoming "problem" players.

RoDu 11-01-2010 07:56 PM

watch Homer get 0 for any of them

This is just a real mess. Paddock and Holmgren need to go to Adirondack and interview the players to find out what's going on. One good prospect is gone and two others are about to be shown the door. And the fact that one of the prospects has history with Idiot Stick (Legein used to say how Idiot Stick helped him improve his game) should speak in volumes about how Idiot Stick has lost control of the room.

This isn't about a culture change in Adirondack. This is about a coach in Adirondack who has failed immensely in helping the prospects reach the next level in their development. This is about a coach who has consistently failed night in and night out in devising a scheme or using the players in a way that they would experience success. He's hung players out to dry and the fact that he's even challenged two young 20 somethings to fist fights at the end of last year should have been more than enough for this franchise to fire him.

Take a look at all the coaches who have come through the Flyers organization and not one of them have ever challenged young prospects to fist fights. Yet, Maroon is sent packing and Idiot Stick is kept around.

Holmgren's brain really is pickled from years of heavy drinking. You can bet that Bobby Clarke is sitting in that President's chair and is probably fuming about what's going on in Adirondack. I'll say it right now - get Tocchet in there and that mess gets corrected in 15 games and players get back on track.

Hang on - Legein didn't quit hockey due to attitude or an unwillingness to work. He was upfront with Columbus when he walked away, and neither left them hanging nor took a paycheque from them. He also returned with a commitment to working his butt off and to try to prove himself.

Neither thing indicates an attitude issue.

I don't have an opinion on Gilbert one way or the other, but there's something stinking in Adirondack.

Never said it was an attitude issue. I know exactly why Legein quit hockey.

That said, people are going to speculate about it.

If this was an isolated incident with Legein, a lot of people would suspect that it had something to do with his prior "apathetic" attitude in terms of hockey.

I agree about him. He's worked his tail off to get back in shape and prove himself.

That makes this mess even more bizarre.

EDIT: In other news, it doesn't appear that he has gotten a chance to ruin Wellwood just yet. Wellwood looked awesome tonight.

Beef Invictus 11-01-2010 08:36 PM

you don't kill every cow on your farm if your farmhand doesn't know how to milk them. someone might wanna tell homer that.

Jumping 11-01-2010 08:37 PM

Is there a possibility that these guys biggest problem may be a lack of talent...?

i think we'd have a more serious problem if gilbert started trying to "milk" the players. :)

i get your point though.
