Wingers playing point.

I noticed sometimes on the powerplay
wingers will play the point and defenseman will play down low. I've seen Ovechkin play point on pp (and I hear he'll change to a 120flex stick from a 79 during it) and Pronger screen the goalie in front.

What's usually the reason coaches want this to happen on the powerplay?

Thanks in advance
Erik

Whenever someone moves to a different position, somebody else has to fill that open spot. Otherwise, you'd have two guys playing the same position at the same time, and that's a bad thing.

I think he's talking about guys who regularly play out of position on the PP. Ovechkin doesn't go to the point to cover, he's there from the start of the powerplay.

This happens on the Devils regularly, with Brian Rolston moving from wing to the play point.

In this particular situation he does it because he has a huge slap shot, way better then a d-man would have in his place.

Wingers will play the point if they play an umbrella on the power play, but also, if they have a bomb of a shot, coaches will put them up top or if they are really big (pronger or chara) coaches will put them in front of the net

Usually if a forward has a howitzer of a slapshot from the point then it's a good idea for him to take the position on the powerplay. Ovechkin, Stoll come to mind.

This happens to me regularly in beer league. I'll encourage the defenseman to rush up and drop back to cover the point. I also have to rush back first to our defensive zone and then we switch back. It's actually really fun.

For PP situations a forward on the point is because they are good powerplay quarterbacks(B. Richards, St Louis), and can run the powerplay much better from there. Or they have a wicked slapshot(Ovechkin, Stamkos). A Dman will play forward veryyyyy rarely on the PP, but when they do its usually cause they are huge and use them for a screen.
