I also own a bunch of other random hockey books and old magazines such as Hockey Digest, Goal etc..

Tell us about your collection! What are your prized possessions?

Loto68 11-28-2010 07:23 PM

I used to collect various magazines in that way, but I just don't have the room in my tiny studio, however I have about 300 mb worth of pdf articles (mostly features and exposes) dating back to the first year after the lock out. Additionally between my hard copies and digital copies of THN, I think I have 2 or 3 almost complete years between 2005 and 2007 plus the accompanying features.

Hardyvan123 11-28-2010 07:33 PM

Have all issues of the hockey news from around 79-90 plus some from before and afterwords and about 325-350 various types of books and magazines, draft guides, Canuck and some Jr guides ect.

Actually it's pretty crazy when i sit down and think about how much time I have devoted to reading, researching or writing or talking about hockey in my life. Thousands and thousands of hours to be sure.

tony d 11-29-2010 08:24 AM

I've subscribed to the Hockey News for 20 years now, 1 of my great regrets is not keeping those old issues somewhere, would be nice to look back on all of them all these years later.

... My collection is probably going to seem paltry to most of you - I have the NHL Official Guides and Record Books from 1967 to 2008, all of the STATS Hockey Handbooks (they were in existence only from 1996 to 2001), and about 20 L.A. Kings media guides. There are a few THN yearbooks from the 90s scattered around, but that's pretty much it.

seventieslord 11-29-2010 05:44 PM

I'll post a picture once I have it properly shelved in my mancave. But for now I will describe it:

- Every THN since August 1995
- Every THN yearbook back to 1984, plus 1982 and 1979
- A few other various annuals like Sports Forecaster and McKeens (the scouting info on the players is invaluable)
- A collection of approximately 400 actual books, no duplicates, all in hardcover when available. This includes the last 28 years of the Official Guide and Record Book, 17 years of Zander Hollander's Complete Handbook Of Pro Hockey, and 18 years of Hockey Scouting report as begun by Howard Berger and John Davidson and carried on later by Sherry Ross.

I haven't read it all, not by a long shot, but I've skimmed and researched pretty much every title when doing ATDs. When I finish a book, choosing what to read next is very difficult.

finchster 11-29-2010 05:51 PM

I have every news paper article from the Toronto Globe and Mail (reprints obviously) of the Eddie Shore/Ace Bailey incident. I researched it for a project I was working on.

Be ware if Seventieslord ever invites you to peruse his collection. I heard a man once got lost in there and was never heard from again.

VanIslander 11-29-2010 06:37 PM

I don't collect to collect because I've moved around a lot, and have 29 boxes of stuff as it is, and am living overseas which adds to costs. But I do read voraciously and I like to have resource material for the all-time drafts.

Beware if seventieslord ever invites you to peruse his collection
I just got a shipment of hockey history books - from seventieslord! - and will plow through these for sure this winter:

Hockey's Hub: Three Centuries of Hockey in Kingston
Portraits of the Game: Classic Photographs From The Turofsky Collection
Blades of Ice: A Century of Professional Hockey
Cold War: A Decade of Hockey's Greatest Rivalry, 1959-1969
The Pictorial History of Hockey
Hockey in My Blood by Johnny Bucyk
Hockey by Eskenazi
Conn Smythe: If you Can't Beat 'Em in the Alley
Hockey Night in the Dominion of Canada

I also have but am less thrilled about:

STLBlueshistory 12-01-2010 07:20 AM

-32 complete years (volumes) of The Hockey News.
-158 issues of Hockey Pictorial
-120 issues of Hoceky Illustrated
-55 issues of Hockey World
-54 issues of Hockey Stars
-Multiple issues of Action Sports Hockey, Ben Strongs Hockey, Inside Hockey etc...
-Complete run of NHL guide from 1959-60 current. The last 3 on CD
-Complete run of both Sporting News Guides & Registers
-Complete run of St. Louis Blues media guide
-28 AHL guides
-31 WHL Guides
-27 OHL/OHA Guides
-Various other Hockey quides including QMJHL, CHL, NHL draft, NCAA guides, etc..

-I do have duplicate guides available. The mailing cost makes them pretty expensive to ship. If someone is interested in some free ones you can send me a pm. I would just add a couple bucks for handling.

-I also have some extre THN issues. I would do the same there. Those I could probably not offer a list of what is available due to the volume. Would just be cost of shipping and a few bucks added for handling.

-They would be shipped from St. Louis, MO

-I am also looking to complete my WHL & OHL run of media guides if anyone has a good source where the cost is reasonable.

-Looking to complete the run of Hockey Pictorial, Hockey Illustrated & Hockey World as well if someone has a good lead where I could do that.

Geez, you must have a lot of spare rooms in house to hold that much stuff.

I actually have an entire closet in the hallway dedicated to the majority of my collection. A few other boxes are in the computer room closet. My fiancee is great allowing me to have this much space.

I think there may be several books out with the same title. Which one? I thought the Gruneau/Whitson book was very good.

Doshell Propivo 12-02-2010 02:11 PM

Early 80's sticker albums anyone? :)

Ferjo 12-02-2010 02:18 PM

Definately may not compete with some of you guys. Very impressive, and hope for you guys that your collections continue to grow.

I myself cancelled my THN service about two years ago. I have not gone through the pile(s), but It should have most-to-all issues from 99 to 2008. For collection purposes continued to purchase all draft previews, yearbooks, and future watches however. I have all the yearbooks going back to 87, except 94 I believe.

Have about 20 issues of THN Inside hockey from the early 90s. Tremendous magazine if you get a chance to pick them up. I find these much easier to go back and read than old hockey news issues. Its not stats based, just very interesting interviews and and articles on all aspects of the game, on and off the ice.

Other magazines
Every Score forecaster preview going back to 2001,
Mckeens since 2005,
NHL official yearbook, 91, then 96-2004
Only two copies of NHL Scouting Report, 1997/98 and 02/03. Truly enjoy these aswell, greatly informative, detailed reports on the entire league.
NHL Guide and record book 97-2004.
NHL Sourcebook from 1987
Inside Hockey yearbooks 90/91 to 92/93
Maple Leaf media guides from 87 to 91, then a about 8 more from random years since

Another rather expensive collection I used to have n the early to mid 90s was purchasing programs from basically every game I went to, junior, NHL or Minors. I have about 70 Leafs programs from about 89 to 1999, until I stopped. Still occasionally pick one up as a keepsake, so I have about 20 in the years since, along with a few from Detroit and Buffalo

About 5 Hamilton Bulldogs programs from 96 to 99. They basically had the same program all year, so I countered by picking up Lineup cards from most games. I have about 30 of those with 30 lineup cards from Subdury Wolves and North Bay in the early 90s, and random ones from places I went once, like Saint John, St. John's, Acadie Bathurst.

Have about 30 hockey books to my name, but I dont often purchase them.

I completely agree. Inside Hockey was a tremendous magazine that had interesting features on the lives of many players outside of the game. It was still obviously hockey oriented, but it was a nice change (and good sidekick) to the regular issues of THN.

Are these worth picking up? I've had a few chances to pick some up from the late 80's but I decided not to. I may look into it again though after seeing a few ads in old issues of THN.

Yes, they definitely are.

The earlier, the better, while Davidson and Berger were still doing it. Unfortunately, those are the hardest to find. I found the 1995-2004 ones for like $1-2 apiece, but the 87-94 editions, at least a few of them cost me $15-20, and in a few of those cases I found the only one available online, so thanks to me you may be SOL on a few of them.

As time goes on they definitely get lazier. They repeat a lot of stuff said the year before. Occasionally the exact report is repeated, more often there is 1-3 new lines added.

The Zander Hollander ones, despite shorter bios on fewer players, are even more enjoyable to me. Just cute little handbooks, with just the most important info on each team's 10-12 most important players.

Thanks man. I've found the 86-87 (Chelios/Gretzky cover) and 87-88 (Hextall cover) versions for $9 each so I'll probably pick them up.

I actually found them at my local sports memorabilia store. They were in a random pile of sports magazines/books.

Knowing my luck, when I go back this coming weekend they will be gone.

I have the Foster Hewitt version, telling The Maple Leafs' story and I included it on the list of bokks I wasn't thrilled about because I don't care for the Maple Leafs. But the book has some great chapters about early era hockey. It's just later in the book I am not very interested in, though more so than when I was younger.
