Arniel to Howson: Get Me Some D**n Goal Scorers!

OK, the thread title was paraphrasing. Here's what he actually said to the Dispatch's Aaron Portzline:

"Do we have the pure skill to score goals? I'm not so sure about that. We have some people who can, and we have guys who are getting frustrated because they haven't scored for a while. Right now we have to do it by committee. We're not a team that has four 30-goal scorers on the rosters. We have to work at it."

It's about time. Captain Nash? It's your turn to speak out.

Samkow 12-27-2010 03:15 PM

Not following how you got your title from that passage. Care to elaborate?

blahblah 12-27-2010 03:15 PM

lol, our only other pure goal scorer is in the AHL "developing".

Fro 12-27-2010 03:16 PM

i read it like Lee does...we don't have true goal scorers and we need some...

The score by committee comment is clearly designed to express pleasure to management.

I laughed at Lee's interpretation, but it wasn't that hard to figure out. I laughed when I read it this morning, thinking close to the same thing.

Intentional or not, the result is the same.

I read it as a shout out...

...to Voracek to stop dicking around and halt his transcendence from skilled young player into a total liability.
...to Umberger to score in a game when we aren't down by 5 goals.
...to Nash to understand that bad team or not, he's capable of more production.
...to Moreau to somehow turn back into the guy we saw at the beginning of the season.

Yeah, this team sucks. But it's certainly capable of sucking a lot less then it has.

Reading between the lines, here's what I believe he's saying:

Quote:

Do we have the pure skill to score goals? I'm not so sure about that.
Translation: You need pure skill in this league to score goals. We don't have it.

Quote:

We have some people who can
Translation: and we have some people who can't. That's surprising for an NHL roster.

Quote:

and we have guys who are getting frustrated because they haven't scored for a while
Translation: because they don't have the pure skill required

Quote:

Right now we have to do it by committee.
Translation: We don't have very few if any who can score based on his talent alone.

Quote:

We're not a team that has four 30-goal scorers on the rosters.
Translation: We only have one. C'mon Howson, give me something to work with here!

Quote:

We have to work at it.
Translation: ... because it doesn't come naturally. The good teams can score when they have an off night. We can't.

Thanks Lee, I didn't think it was that difficult to comprehend. :)

I read it nearly similar to Lee. CBJ doesn't have NHL talent that can score a goal on the roster. (BTW, Hitch already knew that. Thus, he tried to get them to play Hitch hockey to keep the scores low.)

But note to Arniel: You also 7 defenseman: most aren't even good enough for a 3rd pairing on a competitive team. You also have 2 goalies, and only one of them should be in the NHL, and the prevailing wisdom on him is that he's a solid backup.

Baby steps  A good defense is a good offense

I think we're at the point where we need to infuse this team with new attitude from WINNING cultures. Guys that know how to win and just straight up do it That's why I'm willing to overtrade if necessary to get a good player. We need a second player who can put up 30+ and a guy who can be a +double digit defender. But what we need is to get a second star player to take pressure off Nash or someone to challenge him for his spot on the top line. We wake him up and get him a 2nd star player, we could get back on track.

Who do you have in mind to do that?

Matt 12-27-2010 05:34 PM

Reincarnation of Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr and Gretz centering the second line

Brad Richards would be amazing with Nash, I'd give up any combination of Brass, Jake, Filatov, 1st rounder, Savard, Calvert, and any of our existing D-men to get him (provided he expressed the willingness to re-sign before the trade)

Take Filatov off the table and I'm game. He's the guy with all the tatts, right? (When people email me about prospects they always include upper body pics. I don't know why) The one we went after before? Or should have went after before, I should say. Put Richards on the table and let them walk through the locker room to pick and choose.

IBleedUnionBlue 12-27-2010 06:14 PM

If Richards is willing to sign, yes they can have Filatov and anyone else not named Nash. Win now.
