Ryan Parent

Read this kids scouting report.

ASSETS: Plays a smooth, steady and mature game from behind the blue-line. Can bang bodies and is also a solid defenseman on the penalty kill.

FLAWS: Needs to add more bulk and strength to his big frame, since he has trouble against big NHL forwards. Will never be a team's main option on the power play point.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Defensive defenseman.

Is that not what the Oilers need? Pluck him off the wire and put him into Strudwicks place.

Former 1st rounder has bounced around. He's been in Nashville, Philly and Vancouver. All those teams have crazy depth on the Blue. Hockey is all about "numbers and roster spots."

jnewton91 12-30-2010 11:51 AM

Could do a lot worse considering our injury situation. We need D that have NHL experience. IMO this is a move worth considering by Tambo.

Harrison 12-30-2010 11:54 AM

I would take a chance on this kid.

alphahelix 12-30-2010 11:59 AM

would definitely do it.... whats wrong with him?

He's not good would be the only problem, though you could always swipe him, if he does suck as much as most think, then try to fire him down to add dept in OKC

Cogliano13Gagner89 12-30-2010 12:20 PM

Do it Tambo, we go nothing to lose at this point since it's a full re-build. Ryan Jones turned out alright why not gamble on Parent...

Petro Points 12-30-2010 12:27 PM

Cant see a reason to pass up on him besides having too many bodies on the big club.

Vandy, Whitney, Horc and Brule cant all stay on IR for too long.

leoleo3535 12-30-2010 12:31 PM

His cap hit is $925,000 and he gets paid $850,000 in the NHL and or the AHL.
In addition he is on the hook for a $ 1 million dollar deal next year.....NHL or AHL.

That scouting report is dated..... he isn't very good.

tiger_80 12-30-2010 12:34 PM

Oilers will not be picking him up. I can see Tambellini give a chance to Petry or Belle, both of whom are probably better than Parent.

Soli 12-30-2010 01:25 PM

Absolutely nothing to lose. We're not in a position to be overlooking free young talent... assuming it's actually still talented.

Our roster down in the AHL is already looking pretty thin with all the callups. Adding another D would not be a bad move.

this is what i was thinking....if we take another D from them they will be getting pretty thin.

I suppose if the Oil did grab him. The Cap is not going to be much of an issue for a couple of seasons. We have plenty of space and heck Strudwick is not making that much less. Not sure if this would be a good move or not, but I have my doubts he is as bad or worse than Strudwick. Then again I have not watched Ryan Parent play very closely, all that often.

One way or another it would help out OKC if we did pick Parent up. The Oil management said the AHL team is a priority more than before with the rebuild starting.

Cerebral 12-30-2010 01:59 PM

I would be fine picking him up given the injury to Whitney. At worst, he pucks an AHL scrub and at best, he develops late like many shutdown guys and becomes a decent bottom pairing defender. I won't be upset if we pass on him but there's reason to pick him up.

Then again, there's a reason why he's flipped between organizations so much in his young career and it's because he's not developing like people expected.

He also went from one team with cap troubles to another. He's not the best defenseman in the world, but I think there are more than a few teams that would still have him in the NHL.

I think claming him would be a decent move, actually. Plus, he's from PA, SK.

True, but there's a reason why he was the throw-in in those cap deals and it's not because of his salary (a replacement player for Parent would only save the team $300 000 or so).

I wouldn't be shocked if he passes through waivers to be honest. I would have rather snagged Pelech at the start of the year from the Flames but Parent wouldn't be a bad move.

My thoughts pretty much. I wouldn't be surprised if he clears waivers but i wouldn't be opposed to us taking a gamble on him. He's only 23 and we can afford to take a chance on him imo. If we don't though, i won't be upset lol

Other Little Mikey 12-30-2010 02:20 PM

Let's put it this way: what does Vancouver want? Do they want to keep him as depth or for their AHL team, or by claiming him do we help them out since he makes a decent amount of money?

Whatever they want, do the opposite. Decision made. Boom.

It will be 2-3 seasons before the Oilers are "actually" competing with the Canucks.

I would take him.

I think at worst he's a no.7 defenseman on a healthy team. 12-14 minutes. Next season looks like:

Whitney-Gilbert
Peckham-Petry
Smid-Foster
Parent

Where's the harm?

As far as OKC depth goes, if the Oilers claim Parent - Petry would go down at some point.

dixs35 12-30-2010 02:39 PM

He cant be worse than Struds. We are rebuilding are reclamation projects not part of a rebuild? Whats the worse that could happen it doesn't work out and we put him back on waivers and he doesn't get claimed and you get a good depth guy in OKC who still might develope, his contract is for only 1 more year and less than a million so I dont see it as a big risk move.

Uncle Grouchy Smurf 12-30-2010 02:39 PM

I would.

The answer to your Q is in between the arrows :)

surshot* 12-30-2010 02:57 PM

His problem is inexperience so lets get him some. He just may develop into a asset. Pretty sure the guy is not terrible. there had to be some reason why he was a NHLer at a young age. He is only 23 and the only reason he is on waivers is because of the cap.

Moonlapse Vertigo 12-30-2010 03:02 PM

Timid Tambi will stay the course with his roster. I don't expect him to do anything to help his team.

That is definitely not the only reason. However, if we all limit our expectations to "better than Strudwick" it doesn't seem like too bad a move.

I won't be surprised if no one claims him, though.
