1.875 million for this year and next. Do we take the leap?

I hope so.

jumptheshark 01-15-2011 01:37 PM

Wasn't he on reentry earlier in the week as well

KerPatrick 01-15-2011 01:39 PM

Don't see why not, waaaaaay better option then Strudwick or Vandermeer

Eytinge 01-15-2011 01:48 PM

For that price he is very enticing, but I wonder why he fell out of favor so quickly with the new coach. Was he a bad influence in the locker room?

Idaho 01-15-2011 01:49 PM

Sweet merciful Jebus, I hope not. The Oilers need high-end defensive talent, not a bottom feeder.

hes about on par with these guys lol

oil4thecup 01-15-2011 01:52 PM

Not that its Mikes decision of where he goes but I'm friends with a cousin of his and he said Commodore would like to go back to the Eastern conference because of the travel and would prefer NJ since he is familar with the organization. Who knows maybe the stars will align for him and he'll end up there. Lol.

Then we'll wait for Pronger to be waived.

do you know of any high talent defenders that are on waivers, available?

Nikita Filatov 01-15-2011 02:03 PM

I feel like normally Commodore would be a good option for Edmonon at that price, but there were reports of being a bad influence on the younger players on Columbus. I don't feel as if Edmonton would want to be so quick to put that in the lockeroom.

OilerTyler 01-15-2011 02:05 PM

I can't see Tambellini picking up a player that asked for a trade out of Columbus. It would kind of make him look like a hypocrite with the whole Souray thing.

ERC91 01-15-2011 02:07 PM

Just looking at the player he is, I would claim him at that price tag.

But he doesn't make sense for us though.

Whitney, Gilbert, Smid, Peckham and Foster are locked up for next season and nobody of them is likely to be traded due to his play, contract or skill-set.

So he just could slot in at #6, but actually we then could also resign Vandermeer, who has a similar skill set, but is cheaper and actually plays more solidly.

I hadn't heard that before. I had heard that he wanted out because the system that Arniel is playing doesn't suit his playing style, and he was ineffective in the role he was given.

Didn't know about those red flags.

No that was a speculation thread, he was placed on normal waivers though earlier.

Fortunately the Oilers are obviously well connected in Columbus and they can probably get a pretty good report from Howson. Whether the Oilers do end up claiming Commodore or passing on him altogether, I think it will be a well informed decision.

mindmasher 01-15-2011 02:30 PM

If it was a one year deal it's probably a no brainer the Oilers pick him up. At two years...

Looking at raw stats his +-ON/60 is -1.97 (on for 5 goals for and 14 against), and his Corsi Rel QoC is second worst on the team at -0.198 (Kris Russel is the worst). To give you an idea of how that would stack up on the Oilers, the team worst +-ON/60 for the Oilers Dmen is Strudwick by a mile at -2.2, and only Foster has a Corsi Rel Qoc that is worse (-0.534).

For those that need a refresher Corsi Rel QoC is a measure of the relative ability of the other teams players to direct more shots on goal than they allow shots on goal. So a high Corsi Rel QoC means that in general the opposing players they play against tend to direct more shots on goal versus what they allow. Large negative values in this indicate they are playing against guys who routinely get outshot while on the ice (pluggers, goons, 4th liners etc).

According to those stats it's fairly easy to see why he is on waivers. Not only is he playing against crappy players, he's also allowing an obscene rate of goals.

Zach and Slater 01-15-2011 02:32 PM

Why upset the room which by all accounts is great this season to bring in a slight upgrade to our 3rd pairing?! He is cheap, that's fine. And from all accounts Mike is a good guy, but obviously doesn't handle a poor situation well. And through a players eyes Columbus is likely a better situation than Edmonton, mainly because of 61.

The Head Crusher 01-15-2011 02:57 PM

I would take a chance on him.

Yes, because that's what I meant.

Harrison 01-15-2011 03:02 PM

No thanks, we have similar players and he adds no value.

Jmask83 01-15-2011 03:03 PM

I would not. I'd rather give the spot to Chorney. At least that way your finding out what have. What would Commodore accomplish?? 27th place? 26th place? Then what? I think we're fine.

True we already have a red headed step child on the team (Reddox) but we could always use another one to make fun of.

I'm not in the business. How would I know?

Does that mean we should put a claim in on everyone that passes through waivers? He's not a guy that I see as a good fit for the next two years after this, not matter the cap hit.

MinnesotaFats 01-15-2011 03:19 PM

Picking him up would be a mistake.

There is no reason for this team to blow cap space on a defender that isnt going to help this team win games. He isnt an improvement over the scrubs we have now.
