DP: Sharks may be closing in on deal for experienced, high-energy forward to help on

third or fourth line

Any idea who it might be?

rangerssharks414 01-18-2011 12:36 AM

Jarkko Ruutu

I have no idea. I'd imagine it's someone from the eastern conference and a team that's out of it.

Kitten Mittons 01-18-2011 12:37 AM

Yup, we need more forwards.

SactoShork 01-18-2011 12:39 AM

This is fail.

Chubbs 01-18-2011 12:39 AM

Article hints at Cheechoo.

Experienced? Check.
High-Energy? Check. (When he's not ****ing blood :()
Likelihood? Not very, but who knows what goes on in DW's mind.

yep. pretty much gotta hope this guy is better than cheech and nolan ..

joe2cheech 01-18-2011 12:41 AM

i don't think it hinted at Cheechoo. It said the player in question currently plays in the NHL.

Alaskanice 01-18-2011 12:42 AM

This won't be a popular move. Here come all the "Doug Wilson Sucks!!" posts.

It's not Cheechoo, although I've wanted him to be signed and called up for the past month or so. Besides, he isn't NHL right now.

The team probably isn't happy playing Mashinter and/or Desjardins, so they're going to make a move for another forward. They are going to get a bottom line forward before getting a defenseman. Go figure.

Chubbs 01-18-2011 12:42 AM

As far as the deal is concerned, I think it's well worth getting a guy to fill in. Mitchell and Mcginn were expected to step it up and make a difference on the third line and possibly more (like their early stints with Thornton), but neither has shown much improvement and in fact probably regressed if anything.

Sharks DO need forward depth, just they need a quality defenseman much more.

Yeah.. Not a D-man, not Cheech, not Nolan.... triple fail...

though Iím advised the targeted player is someone currently playing in the NHL so you can scratch Owen Nolan off the list of possibilities.

Jarko Ruutu would make sense. Don't know where that speculation coming from, but recall WS discussing it in another thread. Could be the type of guy who could take Mitchell's spot should he be out for a long time.

I'd love to get Jason Chimera, but doubt that's who this is referring to. Same goes for Chad Larose.

The "experienced" makes me think vet- someone like Ian Lapierre (who of course is not available and may never play again). Eric Nystrom may fit that mold.

Hopefully "high-energy" means hard-working, gritty, and great penalty killing, rather than stupid penalties.

TheProfessor1 01-18-2011 12:54 AM

I can definitely see this being a positive move. Sure wouldn't mind a ruutu or a brunette for a mid to late round draft pick.

Kitten Mittons 01-18-2011 12:57 AM

Does this mean Mayers will GTFO? He's terrible.

Kitten Mittons 01-18-2011 01:00 AM

You guys are missing the most important piece of info - NICHOL IS OUT!!

Chubbs 01-18-2011 01:02 AM

Mayers actually impressed me so far this season. His puck handling, board play, and vision are all fairly good for a person in his role, and he only makes a little over league minimum. Can't really ask much more of him.

don't know how they can suspend nichol without doing anything about yandle's slash (yes I know yandle did the league a great service)

Maybe. It's not confirmed yet I don't think. The high hit was pretty obvious, so there's no doubt that the league will take a look at it.

And Yandle's hit probably should have warranted something as well. It wasn't a headshot though, and the league is trying to cut those down so they might do something in this case.

ClicheGuevara 01-18-2011 01:04 AM

Jumping to conclusions. It only says he might be suspended for that hit.

Was there any other conclusion? I don't think anyone suspected anything more severe than that.

I don't think the possible signing has anything to do with Nichol per se, more that the Sharks were going to bring a forward in anyway and it might as well be now with our roster full of injuries and missing players.

SactoShork 01-18-2011 01:07 AM

I think Mayers is okay. He's no Ortmeyer... but that bridge was burned.

If Nichol is out on a suspension, it's gonna be for less than 3 games, so there's certainly no reason to make a move in that regard.

Kitten Mittons 01-18-2011 01:10 AM

Wait, for some reason I thought Nichol was the one hit and now he's injured. :biglaugh:

Anthony* 01-18-2011 01:10 AM

yeah ortmeyers so great hes out of the league
