Gaborik for Brown?

Would anyone trade Gaborik for Dustin Brown? Brown+? Brown + a 2nd (since Sather does so well with those). One advantage of having Brown is that he's younger, his cap hit is less than half of Gaborik's ($3.175M), his production is more than 1/2 of Gaborik's. The disadvantage is Gaborik is Gaborik. This isn't really a reaction to his slump, more against him seeming to not fit in.

Kovalev27 01-19-2011 03:06 PM

no thanks but its not TERRIBLE

brown and schenn i'd do in a second

RangerFan23 01-19-2011 03:14 PM

Definitely. Get younger, tougher, and save a boatload of money/cap space to give to Richards or whoever you want. Brown was a captain at like 23 years old and hits everything that moves, plus hes good for 25-30 goals a year. He's a bigger, stronger, better Ryan Callahan.

Florida Ranger 01-19-2011 03:15 PM

Why not do a Brown + 2nd?

SlingshotVv 01-19-2011 03:16 PM

i'd do it without a doubt. LAK wouldn't make that deal unless Burke left Toronto and took over LA. Milbury would salivate at the chance to move out a young real-deal power forward for an oft injured aging veteran sniper, showing signs of a diminished game

NYR Viper 01-19-2011 03:19 PM

I would do Gaborik for Brown + ______

Maybe someone like Hickey or something like that as the +. Brown is a very good player, he kind of in the Backes-mold who I would have loved for the Rangers to sign had he not re-upped in St. Louis. He would fit in very well on this young, hungry, hard-working team.

mac 01-19-2011 03:19 PM

I would take Brown or Schenn even up for Gaborik

But if Sather could pull off Brown , Schenn and Hickey for say Gaborik, Christensen , Prospal and Valentenko.

I would be a very happy Ranger

AJRanger 01-19-2011 03:20 PM

I'd do Gaborik for plenty of different players, but it's not happening.

Ryan McDonut 01-19-2011 03:23 PM

seriously we're ready to give up on gaborik already guys?

nobody was saying he didnt fit in last year when he was carrying the team. I'm willing to give him more time before i say hes an outcast on this team.

McRanger 01-19-2011 03:25 PM

I would do Gaborik for Brown straight up in a heartbeat. The problem is LA would not. Brown is younger, cheaper, more durable and is the captain of their team.

I'm not saying he is an outcast at all. However if a team offered fair value for him and the Rangers were getting players who may fit in better then I would probably make the move. Thats all.

I'm not necessarily giving up on him, but if we can get Brown+ for him, I'm certainly listening.

JeffMangum 01-19-2011 03:29 PM

Brown + Schenn + 1st, sure.

But we won't get that. So forget about it.

hpNYR 01-19-2011 03:29 PM

LOL......Is everyone giving up on Gaborik already? What are you guys going to do when he has his hattrick tonight?

Some will say: "Hooray he's back!"

Others will say: "Oh look he scored another hat trick against a crappy team in a blow out. Whoopee."

RangerFan23 01-19-2011 03:40 PM

Trading him for the captain of another team in his mid-20s with a track record of 25-30 goals, locked up for a few more years at a very reasonable price isn't giving up on him. I think Gaborik will come around and be productive again, but I'd still trade him for Brown in a heartbeat.

WalterHeisenberg 01-19-2011 03:40 PM

No way.

Is the correct answer. Need consistency, not hat-tricks once a month against teams they should beat anyway.

Right. Not every deal is "giving up" on a player.

Zuccarello Awesome* 01-19-2011 03:45 PM

This is really funny. Most of us were even giving Gomez, Drury, and Redden the "I'll give him a second full year at least to get used to the new team / style / etc when they first arrived in NY." But Gaborik comes in, carries this team, scores 86 points, and then follows it up with half of a lackluster season in which he still may finish with ~60 points in about 70 games. He's certainly not looking like the player / threat he was last year, but I am confident that a) he WILL come around before the year is over and score some huge goals for us down the stretch b) We underestimated Prospal's effect on him and it was less about Gaborik elevating Prospal's game and more that both players fit eachother like a glove and complimented each others games perfectly.

Let's be real. You can't look at the team he is playing against and automatically eliminate the value of the goal.

You need to look at each goal and see how it is scored more than the team it is scored against.

For example, Gaborik had a tremendous goal against the Islanders which involved him out muscling the defensmen and positioning himself in front of the net. He did that and scored. It doesn't matter that it was against the Islanders; it was still a tenacious hard working goal.

NYR Sting 01-19-2011 03:47 PM

I have no problem with moving Gaborik, but not for another 25 goal 55 point player. We have more than enough of them already. If they want to give us another serious asset or two with Brown, then fine. But it'd better be something big.

Thats ridiculous. Ask this question last season and many would scream "NO"

As much as I love Dustin Brown. As much of a complete 2 way game he has and is my type of player...I would definitely say no to that trade. This team needs goal scoring and trading Gaborik for Brown doesn't improve the goal scoring on the team. If anything it's a decline.

I Am Chariot 01-19-2011 03:50 PM

Drury, grachev + 1st

That's fine, yes. If he scores a big goal, even if it is a crappy opponent, then that's great. If it's a nothing goal in a blowout though, I don't care how hard he worked. Especially if he doesn't show up for 10 more games.

However, again, a hat-trick once a month is not cutting it. I don't care if every goal was end to end 1 vs 5 and done with one hand. Goals in blowout games does nothing but pad his stats. He needs more goals when the Rangers are trailing by one in the third or it's tied, or in overtime. I'll be satisfied if he scores in 2 or 3 games consecutively, even if they are nothing goals in a blowout.

I love Gaborik, I'm not advocating trading him, and I know he is slumping, but I can't justify defending him all the time either.
